Introduction

Chris Johnson: I'm Chris Johnson and you're listening to a special series on charisma connection about the send a gathering that drew tens of thousands of people to Orlando, Florida. Saturday, February 23. In this series we will share some speaker and artist interviews and hear from some of the attendees who came from near and far to be activated into their evangelistic and missionary calling.

Matt, you were on the stage this morning. What did it look like looking out on Camping World Stadium today?

Matt Gilman: It was such a privilege and an honor for me to be here in general, let alone be asked to lead worship this morning. When I looked out this morning, and I saw the people just flooding in, so hungry for the presence of God, so hungry for what the Lord is doing right now not only in the stadium in this city but all across the nation. He's galvanizing people to missions and prayer and evangelism unto the Great Commission being fulfilled. It's so amazing just to see tens of thousands of young people passionately pursuing the presence of God and worshiping from a place of not duty or obligation, but worshiping because they're hungry for the real presence of God, for something real and raw and authentic. It was such a privilege and such an honor to get to be a part of The Send.

Chris Johnson: Tell us what all you're involved in right now.

Matt Gilman: You mentioned Influence Music. I'm an artist with a label based out of Orange County, California. We started that last year. We released our first album last year. I’m about to release a second this summer, which is really exciting. But it's really cool. It's really awesome to be a part of a community of such creative people. There's different people from different realms of the music industry. Some have been in the worship world, some of in even in the secular music world, but have a heart to write worship songs; songs that would touch the lost or even cross radio streams and get the message of Jesus and the message of his kindness and his love, even in mainstream radio. That's kind of the vision for it. But it's really cool to be a part of that, really awesome to collaborate and to write with some Grammy Award-winning, platinum-selling songwriters. More recently, my wife and I, we started with a with a friend of mine, his name is Pastor Donny Smith. We started a church a church plant in Apopka, Florida, the greater Orlando area, and we just started that in August. I'm the worship pastor there and my wife is more of an administrative type, but she can do everything. She's part of the worship team. So that's kind of what's going on. We’ve got two kids. twin boys, who are seven years old.

Chris Johnson: And you also have a background with some other churches like Orlando House of Prayer. Then before that, weren't you at IHOP in Kansas City?

Matt Gilman: I graduated high school in 2003 and in January 2004, I moved to Kansas City. I was born and raised in Minnesota, South Dakota, upper Midwest, and so I moved down to Kansas City right after I graduated high school. I did a six-month internship. I said, Lord, I will give you six months of my life and those six months very quickly turned into 10 years. I was on full-time staff at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City for a decade. So thankful, so grateful for the Lord's leadership and just how much that I grew; not only as a worship leader, but just in the Word and the knowledge of who God is in those 10 years. I moved down to Orlando in the summer of 2013. I joined with the Orlando House of Prayer, which is an amazing organization based in Ocoee. I just stepped down from that position this past spring and started the church plant in August.

Chris Johnson: How did you get tied in here with The Send? How were you invited to participate?

Matt Gilman: I did The Call with Lou Engle for about three, four years. Lou and I would travel around the nation. Some Call events were small, a few thousand and some of them were 70,000 people. You know, The Call in Washington, D.C. in 2008 was I think, 70,000 people on the mall … and just taking that that message of the holiness of God, the beauty of God and just getting before the throne … It was an honor to get to run with Lou. He was kind of my connect point for this because him in collaboration with all of these other ministries. They invited me to come and open up the day. It was a real honor and a real privilege.

Chris Johnson: Excellent. Today is all about the Great Commission. How does that tie in with prayer and praise?

Matt Gilman: I think the prayer movement and the missions’ movement are the same movement. They're just different spheres of it. You can't have missions without the furnace of night and day prayer behind it. They're both equally significant. Ultimately, it's unto the Great Commission being fulfilled and Jesus coming back to planet earth. That's our highest calling is to preach the gospel. The gospel of the kingdom will be preached to every nation and then the end will come. Then Jesus comes back and he brings his kingdom to the earth and so it's exciting to see what's happening not just here in Orlando but all across the nation. There is something, there is a revival that is stirring across the nation right now. There's an awakening in the bride of Christ going. We're really about to see biblical prophecy unfold and come to pass in our lifetime. When they're talking about the Bible being translated in every nation, in every language and every people group, that's something obviously that's never happened before. They're saying it's going to happen within the next one to two years. When you think about that, that was Jesus. Jesus said that 2,000 years ago to the ends of the earth and every nation, and then the end will come. It's about to happen. It just makes me go, wow, Lord, I'm alive for such a time as this. I'm on planet Earth right now for such a time as this to watch this unfold and it's really cool. It's Jesus coming back.

Chris Johnson: So, this is really urgent what we're doing here today at The Send and how some people might be sent out or all of us will take our own places and the church and then in the kingdom. So, is there anything that's really impacting you personally here today?

Matt Gilman: I'm so impacted by the unity, specifically in the church of Orlando. I've done a lot of these events around the country, even some internationally. I have never seen the spirit of unity among pastors and preachers and teachers in different church bodies and different ministries from all different denominational backgrounds and even different theological backgrounds coming together and saying, you know what? Let's throw aside our theological petty differences, and let's rally together to see a move of God in our city and ultimately our nation. It's been such an honor to get to be a part of that and to see the convergence of so many different streams in the body of Christ coming together and saying we have one common goal. We have one common vision and that's to see an awakening, a spiritual awakening in our in our city and in our nation and so it's been remarkable to see that.
