John Burton: We've had quite a crazy history with church planting and just helping to establish and prayer movements, and a whole bunch of writing and things like that. Right now, I primarily write and do a little traveling and ministry. We're based out of Branson, Missouri, where we own a couple of businesses here But, yeah, definitely, a history with some wild, weird things that we've experienced. We’ve learned a lot in over the last 20-plus years, almost 30 years, really.

Jenny Rose Spaudo: Let's talk about some of those wild things you've experienced. Have you ever experienced or encountered witchcraft while you were working in ministry?

John Burton: Yeah, definitely, many, many times. We were baptized in into that and had a lot of kind of on-the-job training. We have been in ministry for a long time, youth ministry and things like that and then ultimately decided to plant a church. This is back almost 20 years ago, and we planted a church in Manitou Springs, Colorado. We did not realize that Manitou had quite a history. God probably did not let us know exactly what we were getting ourselves into. We planted that church, kind of atypically. We just had a call of a call from God and set out and launched it out of our apartment and just kind of went from there and saw it grow and develop. It was exciting times. But Manitou Springs has a history and a reputation for witchcraft, the occult. Some believe it to even be the darkest city in the nation. Word had it that the Satanic Bible at one time lived there. We wondered if the Satanic Bible might have been written from there, at least in part. But, it's a very liberal place. It’s very pro liberal agenda, anti-church, anti-God. So, we launched our church there and absolutely we experienced many encounters with witchcraft. Like I said, we kind of kind of learned how to deal with that kind of on the fly.

Jenny Rose Spaudo: What were the kind of some of the lessons that you had to learn because you were just launched into this? It's not like you read bunch of books on it. You learned by doing. So, what were some of the practical things that you learned in spiritual warfare?

John Burton: So, yeah, you're right. We didn't necessarily read a bunch of books on it. In fact, kind of the way it works is we would have these encounters or these experiences, or we'd have to deal with the resistance, and we'd have to figure out how to respond. I've always been a prayer guy. I really found God in the prayer room. That's the very best place to find God because it lights you up and keeps you grounded. So, number one, by far, we discovered that a life of vibrant, aggressive, determined prayer was non-negotiable. You're absolutely, completely and entirely hopeless if you are trying to deal with witchcraft or the enemy on any level if you aren't just engulfed in prayer; if you're not set ablaze in that fiery prayer in that prayer furnace. There's no other option. So, you have to do that for a variety of reasons. Number one, to know God's heart on the matter. And number two, to hear from God in terms of specifics, what's going on. how do you respond. You have to understand your authority. That's not going to happen anywhere but the prayer room. And, of course, the Word of God, as you as you are, growing in your understanding of who you are in Christ and all of that. But even the Word of God doesn't come to life, really, unless you are engaging with God at the same time. So, that happens in the prayer room. There are many, many different reasons why you have got to be a person of prayer. Praying in the Spirit is huge and just on and on. But prayer is number one by far. A lot of people, they'll get into the Word or they'll quote unquote believe what the Word says about a specific matter, or they'll even quote Bible verses and do all of that, and it just doesn't work. The enemy knows the Bible, too. He understands what it means. Just having an intellectual understanding of what the Bible is saying on the matter is not the same as resisting the enemy. So, we have to actually engage in the fight in the warfare.

Jenny Rose Spaudo: Right, and that makes total sense. Can you kind of give me a couple examples of when you've actually had to do that, like use prayer to combat witchcraft coming against you?

John Burton: Yes, definitely. Probably the one that comes to mind, and I've written about this for Charisma, but long, long story short, there was a young lady who visited our church. We had a very small church at the time. We had just gotten started, and she came forward to be baptized in the Holy Spirit in her first service. Well, we quickly realized that she wasn't even saved and she didn't even know kind of what she was responding to. So, we started ministering to her kind of at a different level. Ultimately, she shared with us that she was involved in witchcraft. We went to her house. She invited my wife and myself to her house to pray for her house. We did that and we were praying and didn't have a lot of success. We asked if there was anything in the house that maybe you should get rid of. She came up with an occultic T-shirt and then a witches’ handbook. So, she got rid of both of those things, gave them to us and. But I couldn't break through. It was so strange. There was no flow of the Holy Spirit, there was no power in prayer. There was no unction, none of that. I couldn't figure it out. Super weird. So, we decided to pray through the house, anointing things with oil, doing all the stuff that you know to do. I said, I don't know what to do now, so let's anoint things with oil. So, we did that and we weren’t having any success. We went on upstairs and I was kind of leading the way in this little townhouse. I went to step into her bedroom, and the moment I stepped into her bedroom, the only way I could describe it is like I stepped into a swimming pool sideways. I walked into this wall of water or this wall where I just really couldn't breathe. I was gasping for air. I'm like, whoa, wait a minute, and I stepped back out. We prayed through this bathroom and the other bedroom and then I'm like, OK, we have to go back in there. So, I went back in there and again I couldn't breathe and I tried to pray. This is so interesting. I tried to pray, I tried to pray in the Spirit and I could not. The Holy Spirit spoke to me. I'm almost doubled over, can't breathe. He said, you're not gonna be able to pray in the Holy Spirit until she comes into agreement and eliminates whatever's going on in that room or deals with what's happening in that room. Which, again, being a being a person of prayer, if I didn't hear God gave me that instruction, it would have been game over. I wouldn't have been able to do anything. We got in there and I said, listen, I can't breathe. There is some serious evil in this room right now. I need you to let me know why, what that is. I'm standing over by her bed, kind of between her bed in the wall and just I'm standing there. My wife is there with her, and she starts kind of grabbing some things out of the closet, a poster and another shirt, books of material, things like that. She starts putting them on the bed, and it's not working. I'm like, listen, there is something that you're not dealing with or you have got to deal with if you want us to pray for you. You’re not going to be free from all of this demonic activity if you don't get serious. It was very, very difficult for her but she said, OK, all right. She said I guess I probably should get rid of that altar that's next to my bed and it was literally two inches from me. I look and there it is … all of these ashes and this little altar. I'm like, you've got to be kidding me. I'm like, yes, that's a great idea. So, I say go get a hefty bag trash bag. She went downstairs got a trash bag and put the stuff on the bed in the trash bag, put the altar in the trash bag.  The moment she did that, I could pray in the Spirit. I'm like, wow, OK. So, I started praying in the spirit of my wife is now kind of talking with her, kind of on the other side of the room. And the Lord speaks to me. Now everything's opened up and I can pray in the Spirit and the Lord speaks to me and he says, John, there is something going on and the enemy is forcing her to record what happens in this room by journaling. It was a very specific word. And I said, all right, I need to tell you what the Lord just told me. I said there is something that goes on in this room when you're going to sleep at night or whatever and the enemy makes you journal this. Her eyes just about bugged out. She was beside herself, and she gathered herself and said, yeah, this is why I actually invited you over. I just didn't want to tell you because it was so weird, it’s so horrible. Every night the enemy visits me; a demon literally visits me in my room every night and forces me to write things. She showed me a stack of these notebooks; a huge stack, a couple feet tall. She said there's a whole bunch more on my computer. I'm just blown away. So, we got all that and put it in the trash bag. So, we're praying with her and repenting and renouncing and doing all that kind of stuff. We ended up having many, many, many trash bags full of occultist witchcraft types of materials. That that was a crazy night for sure, but that's an example of having to hear God's voice clearly as you're going through quite an intense situation with a very, very strong spirit of witchcraft.

Jenny Rose Spaudo: Right, absolutely. So, she dealt with that issue, and then after that, was she just totally fine?

John Burton: No, in fact it's a sad story and I hate sad stories, of course. But I think it's an important story because it speaks to really how serious this issue is. So, after that, she did okay for just a little while. Then she ended up disappearing and we couldn't find her. But we ultimately did find her and she actually had all sorts of medical issues. She lost her child and completely turned back and blamed Amy and me for taking away her power. It was just terrible. She ended up manifesting and just cussing my wife out in the car and just all of this kind of stuff. It ended up being a very sad story. My takeaway from that, even though we did everything we needed to do … I think sometimes people don't understand that ministry is really messy. It's not like you're flipping a light switch on and off. It's not like you just know your authority and you just make it happen and everything is nice and clean and neat and you take care of business. It’s just not like that because we're dealing with people who have a free will. She had a free will. She refused to get grounded in the Word. She refused to jump into a healthy church community, whether it was ours or somewhere else. She really fell back worse than she was in the beginning. The Bible talks about spirits coming back seven times as strong if you don't fill the house with the Holy Spirit. That's what happened with her. I've often said that sometimes it's wisdom if you understand the situation to leave someone undemonized and to deliver them, if you understand that they're not going to fill their house with the Holy Spirit. In her case, we didn't understand that, she wanted freedom and there was a difficult end of the story.
