Dr. Steve Greene: I'm excited to introduce you to a pastor that you all know very well. Greg Laurie is with me as a guest today and we're going to talk about his book, The Jesus Revolution. I want to talk about this book, First of all, let's update our audience. The charisma audience is large; we have over five and a half million downloads of these podcasts on the CPN network; they're interested in you. They want to know more about you. I know that this because I know our audience. Let's talk a little bit about what you're doing now as senior pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship and tell me more about what you're up to and what God saying to you.

Greg Laurie: This book Jesus Revolution is the story of the last great American revival. It was out of this I came to Christ in this revival. In 1970 is when I became a Christian and then about three years ater I found myself starting a church. Now, I was a brand-new believer and obviously my knowledge of Scripture was somewhat limited. In fact, it has been on the job training ever since then. But you know, back in that day, you didn't hear a lot of startup churches like you do today. There was pretty much a traditional established church out there. And so to start something from scratch was not a common thing. But a lot of us were doing that because we've had our lives changed by Christ. We wanted to go lead people to Christ and build them up in their faith. A lot of young men went out and started churches in that time, myself included. I was really just doing a Bible study. I didn't even know it was going to become a church. But what I found the was that I walked into a spiritual awakening and I didn't know it was a spiritual awakening because it was the only Christianity I really knew. I had not been raised in the church. My mom was married and divorced seven times and with a raging alcoholic side. I had this crazy childhood growing up and lived all over the country and was very unstable. I many ways I had to grow up and become the adult. It sent me a search early in life trying to find out what life is all about. That got me searching, and I had heard the gospel on my high school campus and that was all happening during the Jesus revolution. So, I thought, somebody needs to write a book about this and tell the story because it's been said the flame of revival spreads the theme of revival. I thought if I could tell this story and in an understandable way, prayerfully and hopefully, it can inspire a new generation to want to pray for a revival for right now. America really needs a spiritual awakening

Dr. Steve Greene: Yes, so much. How do you think we're doing in that, pastor?

Greg Laurie: Well I don't think we're having one. I think revival starts with the church. I think we have to distinguish between two words, revival and awakening. America needs an awakening. The church needs a revival. And the word revival is to restore to original condition. So, I think we will know that we're having a revival when we're impacting our culture and I see the way culture is going right now. Churches need to be praying that God would first restore us. What is a revival? We get overly mystified with the word and attach a lot of things to it that you don't really find in the Bible. A revival is simply being what it should have been in the original state.

·         Acts 2:42-47: They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers. Fear came to every soul. And many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common. They sold their property and goods and distributed them to all, according to their need. And continuing daily with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

So, if I were to take a cool, classic car like a ‘57 Chevy and restore it to its original state, that's a revival of a car. If I were to do the same with the church, it's like living as a Christian and having a church that's close to what the New Testament Church look like; a church that is focused as Acts 2:42-47 says on worship and prayer and the apostles doctrine and where the church loved each other and when we read that the Lord added to the church daily those that were being saved. I think if we want to see the church have a revival we need to pray individually that that we would have a revival, that I would have a revival, that you would, that I would be the strongest Christian I could be living in a first-love relationship with Jesus Christ making a difference.

Dr. Steve Greene: Let's dive in a little bit more into your book. I'm sitting on an airplane with your book in my hand. What am I going to tell people about it as they're sitting next to me and ask, ‘What are you reading? Would I like I like that book and what would I get out of it?

Greg Laurie: We chose this title, Jesus Revolution. Actually, we didn't coin this phrase; Time magazine did. So you have to go back in time now to the late ’60s in America, the Vietnam War was raging. John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated. There were riots in the streets. Time magazine whipped up this ominous issue with the black cover with reverse red letters asking the question, ‘Is God Dead?’ Now, fast-forward a few years, God pours His Spirit out in the Jesus Movement. Thousands and thousands of young kids are coming to Christ and the cover was sort of this psychedelic drawing of Jesus with the headline, “Jesus Revolution.” So, it wasn't even like Jesus Revolution question mark? It was Jesus Revolution. So, Time declared something was happening. If you read the article that was in that magazine, you would you couldn't even imagine that being in Time magazine today. But it was so significant that even they had to acknowledge it. I think we know what a difference a few years make, and significantly what a difference a revival makes. So, Jesus Revolution is a great title because when you think of revolution, you think of people. The French Revolution, for instance, comes to mind. But revolution also speaks of a cycle, something coming around again.  A I think what it is, is it's a return to again, what I was saying earlier what was happening with the early church, where they were turning the world upside down. That's really what happened in the Jesus Revolution. It changed things. There were so many that were looking for answers through drug and sexual experimentation and other things. And here it was all within a relationship with God. There was a whole generation that did not know that. It really was a revolution and it really impacted the country. In many ways I think we see that even to this very moment.

Dr. Steve Greene: That’s good, But I'm still sitting next to you trying to figure out what I'm going to get out of this book. I like to ask people who write about books and try to promote them this question. What's in it for me? Is it going to impact my life today?

Greg Laurie: It's a very important question. I think what is in it for you or the reader is that you will read about something that God did. But I wrote it with a view and with a prayer that God would do it again. So, it's written in the third person. In other words, it's not my voice, but it's about me and others that were impacted by this revival. It's written by Ellen Bond, a New York Times best-selling author, outstanding writer. But I gave her a lot of the information that she uses in the book and plus she did a lot of research historically. But I think as you read it, and I've had people say this, I've seen reviews that have been written like on Amazon. com and someone said, I read this book and it made me pray for a revival in my life. I think that they find takeaway truth in the book that they can apply in their life today as well. So, I pray and I hope that when someone reads it, they will be inspired to pray this simple prayer, do it again Lord.
