Introduction

Dr. Steve Greene: As a father, I believe that my first job was to protect my children from any type of physical harm. While raising my kids, I protected them from Stranger Danger, mall kidnappings, and, of course, proper road crossings. But my job got a lot harder when we gave our kids the keys to the car. When they were gone, and the phones rang … yes, back then our home phone actually rang .., it seemed to startle us and that worried me. It seems like every time they were gone, I never really relaxed when they're out with the car. Back in the late 1980s, I was in Buffalo, New York, training a group of TV executives in a three-day seminar. We were on our first break of the first day, when I received a message on my pager for my neighbor, who was also a doctor. It was a fancy pager or back then; it was the forerunner of text messaging. The pager actually had words on it, much like we see now with our text. And here's the text that I received: “Your son was in a car accident with his friend. One of the boys was DOA, and the other is in an ambulance. I don't know which boy was killed, but felt I had to tell you to get home.” I'd like to welcome you to the longest 19 minutes of my life. I walked back into training because there was no way I could get home fast from Buffalo. I waited to hear from my wife because I knew she would eventually call. I resumed teaching and my mind raced back and forth from home to the podium that I clung to. I'm sitting here in buffalo thinking my job is to protect my kids and here I sit in Buffalo, New York. It was 19 long minutes before my pager displayed these words: “He is OK. Thrown through the windshield. Stay where you are. I almost threw my pager across the room. I realized I should have been praying more. I leaned on that podium and I told the room give me a minute while I thank God my son is still alive. So, friends, any plan to protect our children must begin and end with prayer. My guest today can help us with that.

My guest is Dr Iris Delgado. She's written a book called Powerful Prayers to Protect the Heart of Your Children.  Let me tell you just a little bit about Dr. Delgado. She's the founder and president of Crowned with Purpose Ministries. She's known to be a dynamic speaker. Her doctoral degree is in Christian counseling. You will hear that background come through this interview today. She does a lot of counseling through Vision International University. She's really traveled the globe ministering for the last 40 years. She's the author of a series of books including Satan, You Can't have My Children. I love that book. I want to get two of them and Satan, You Can't Have My Marriage. Is that brilliant? We need to have those books on our homes. She's also a co-author with her husband, John Delgado, of Destroy the Works of the Enemy. So, we're going to talk about this great book by Iris Delgado, Powerful Prayers to Protect your Child. I want to start right off that you must have had some kind of motivation to write this book. So, what got into to want to write it?

Some of Iris Delgado’s Books

·         Powerful Prayers to Protect the Heart of Your Child

·         Satan, You Can’t Have My Children

·         Satan, You Can’t Have My Promises

·         Satan, You Can’t Have My Marriage

·         Destroy the Works of the Enemy

Iris Delgado: What made me write this book Powerful Prayers to Protect the Heart of Your Child has to do with the situation and the crisis I see today. I started writing these prayers many years ago, praying them for my children, my daughters and my two grandsons. I have seen how God has used the power of powerful praying and interceding in the spirit to affect their lives in many ways; how god has rescued them and protected them from the hands of the enemy. So, writing this book I said, wow, I see so much crisis today. Parents are battling with the problems of the children. We are looking at a generation that's captivated by the magic of very new technology and the social networks that absorb all their attention and their senses. It's greatly affecting the family. It's even affecting how a marriage is undertaking these steps of harassment and divorce and children; the lack of attention. There's so much involved. And I said, wow, I need to get these prayers out there. I need to learn how to pray powerfully. I need to be able to share this because I can't keep this to myself. If it works for me, it has to work for them too.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's right. I'm wondering what you think, Dr. Delgado, when you sit in a restaurant, and you see a family of four, and all four of them have their phones in front of their face while they're having this meal together. How does that strike you about the structure of family today?

What You’ll Learn from Powerful Prayers to Protect Your Child

·         Tap into the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit to Protect Your Child

·         Put a hedge of protection into action through specific and focused prayers

·         Establish a spiritual security system in your home

·         Become free from generational strongholds and curses

Iris Delgado: It's amazing. I see this all the time and it really bothers me. In fact, yesterday, I was at a restaurant and I noticed a mom sitting there with four children, maybe between the ages of five and 12. It was the best-behaved family that I have ever seen. I don't know if she was still single mom or not. But they were all involved in speaking with the mom. One of the girls had a book she was reading. The other one was painting with crayons, and they were totally absorbed in each other. But like you're saying, this was unusual. I had to stand up and congratulate the mom and say, you're doing a good job, mom. She just smiled. But most of the time, what you do see is children with their cell phones, engrossed. I don’t what they're watching or what they’re seeing, the videos, the various games, but this is what you see all over and it's affecting the relationships. It's affecting their character. It's affecting their work in school. It's affecting how they feel. A lot of them are Christians and it's affecting how they serve God and how they believe God. They don't put God first. First is their technology, their cell phones, their Facebook pages, interacting with others, people that they don't even know hardly. They even go to church and you can see them with their phone on the side of their hand, making believe they're looking up, but they're really looking at the cell phones, playing with the games on the cell phones. This has gotten so out of hand that I really don't know what we're gonna come to with this generation.

Dr. Steve Greene: I think you're accurate, and I don't think it's going to get better. It's obviously a condition of the heart and you point that out in your book. So how can you help parents that are listening prepare their hearts for an attitude of prayer for their children?

Iris Delgado: It actually begins when the child is small, young and captivated with the instruction. But as they get older, it gets tougher a new system, a new process has to take place. Many parents who have teenagers can get their attention or even get that respect. So, I believe that it's a situation of the heart. It begins in the heart, how the parents are reacts at home, how the parent answers, how the parents behave, how the parent works, and it starts there. You may have a hell home and you may have children that are so out of control that you really can do anything by just talking to them. You have to start being an example. If a parent begins by being an example to those children, by what they say, how they comport themselves, what they believe, what comes out of their mouth, the tongue has power. The tongue can heal or it can kill, and our words are so powerful. Our prayers are even more powerful. We need to know how to react to situations, how to react towards our children. When things come up in the homes that really cause us to want to jump out and put that child in order and even whip them or whatever, say bad words. We need to understand that this is a spiritual situation that’s going on. We are in a spiritual warfare. Unless we make up our minds, to trust God, and to learn how to pray and put Him first and our children see us having this confidence and just trusting God, we're gonna head downhill, worse and worse and worse every time.

Dr. Steve Greene: I know you're an experienced Christian counselor. So, I'd like you to be in the middle of one of your sessions and one of the parents looks at you and says, Dr. Delgado, that's what I want my home to be like. But we're not like that. We're raising our children halfway through life now, and we can't get to this place. What can we do to try to fix it when it's been broken for so many years?

Iris Delgado: I believe that in order to bring some form some kind of change in that family … in order for change to take place, first there has to be a change in the heart of the parent. And if the parents can make a decision, I am going to change, I am going to see the help of the Holy Spirit to guide my life in a different way, then both of them can convey the message and have a family reunion. Let me tell you something about children, especially teenagers. They can smell a fake. They can tell when parents are making something up or when they're real. I think that is time to become real. To make a stand, have a family reunion and say this is what's going on here. This is the way this home is being ruled. It’s not being ruled by peace and by joy and by strength and by prosperity and abundance. We have too much going on in here that it's bad. It's dark in this home. God is not blessing; the blessing of God is not flowing. We need to make some changes. And you need to start teaching the children and showing them that there's a better way. We were created to be able to make changes. We were created by God and He has already instilled in us all these attributes. But we just don't know that they are there. Parents grow in God and they grow in the Word of God. They learn how to pray over their children. God will make the changes in the children's lives. Parents can’t do it by themselves. Parents, you're gonna have to make the changes. pray every day. Make a change in the way you speak and the way you pray. Learn to pray powerfully. My book is loaded with powerful prayers. When I say powerful, they don't come from a human spirit. These are scriptures that we turn to and we stand upon them because the Word of God is alive and active. It’s powerful, and God will do what you can’t do, and that is changing the heart. You want the heart of your child to be changed and transformed. You can do it, parents. You have to allow the Holy Spirit to do it. He will change and transform that heart. Believe me, I've seen it. I've seen it in my children and grandchildren. I see it when a parent stands firm and follows my advice and reads the book and does the prayers and learns how to pray and stand upon God's Word. I've seen the changes, and it's possible no matter how bad or how deep, how far gone, that child of yours, even a husband or wife, has gone down into, God is able to lift them up. How? Through your prayers.
