Dr. Steve Greene: The presidential prayer team, the national nonpartisan prayer ministry for America and its leaders, have announced that it's going to host the largest virtual prayer event in the nation's history on the National Day of Prayer on May 2 2019. For those of you listening ahead of time, that's Thursday. This event is going to all allow participants to unite online and pray together for the leadership of our country and be part of the largest collective prayer event in U.S. history. This is, as most of you know, a national observance that seeks to encourage and emphasize prayer among people of all faiths, regardless of current issues or positions. This year's theme is love one another, as referenced in John 13:34.

·         John 13:34: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (MEV)

I'm excited to welcome Jim Bolthouse to the podcast. We're excited to tell our audience about the presidential prayer team and what your mission is. So why don't you describe that for us. You are founder and president of this organization. What are you up to?

National Day of Prayer on Charisma News

·         The Stunning Roots of America’s National Day of Prayer

·         Presidential Prayer Team to Host Largest Virtual Prayer Event in Nation’s History

·         Trump Calls on Americans to Use the ‘Power of Prayer’ to End Violence and Protect Religious Liberty

Jim Bolthouse: It all started back in year 2000 when President Bush was newly into office and as you recall in history, what was his happening to him. There was so much doubt over his election and so much animosity toward the president at the time that a group of men in the church in Scottsdale, Arizona got together and said, you know what, we need to start making this a weekly routine of praying for our president. From that idea, they incorporated into a group that wanted to encourage other people to do the same. Then when 911 hit, they said this is the time we’ve got to go national. So, at that time, I was operating a business, a web business that was putting on websites for churches and ministries and they contacted me said, gey, can you have a website up by next Monday that can handle up to 50 million people. I went, for what? As they explained to me what was going on, what they wanted to accomplish, I immediately fell in love with what they were attempting to do. We were able to get enough of a system up even though half of the country was still reeling from the effects of 9-11. We were able that following Monday to have it announced from the garden at the White House that there's a place for people to go if they want to pray for the leadership and the president of our country, and it just took off from there.

·         Log on to presidentialprayerteam.org

Dr. Steve Greene: You know that so every president has needed prayer. Every year, we always say this is the time, this is the day, more important than any other as we pray for our president. It seems to be a little bit elevated now. I think I've always felt like it was an important day. Why do you think people are so resistant this time and their hands were thrown up in the air and they don't seem to be engaging with this Presidential Day of Prayer.

National Day of Prayer on CPN

·         A Call to Pray for Our President

Jim Bolthouse: I've been doing this a long time. Not just for the prayer team, but living it. It just seems like every decade or so, I see more and more apathy amongst Christians when it comes to praying for our government or even being involved in our government. It is sad to me because if there's any place that we should be involved in the leadership of our country, if we're going to continue to be a God-led country. Every year, it just seems like more and more people are going the stuff that is going on in Washington is sinful, it's wrong, it's icky, it's black. It's not something I want to be involved with. So, I'll just let them do their thing and we will just be praying over here in in our little town for what we need to have here in our little town. And unfortunately, the statistics of the elections have proven out that Christians are one of the smallest groups of people that go to vote. And to me that just is unusual. That did change this past election, and you can see the power of what happens when Christians get motivated because of what happened in the 2016 election. But even that, it was still a fraction of what should have been there as far as Christians getting involving getting involved in praying and then voting.

Dr. Steve Greene: There's no question about that. You've added a little bit of a spin to it, made it better with your virtual prayer event and discuss how that works so that all of our listeners can make sure to log on and pray at this virtual prayer event.

Jim Bolthouse: Let me give you a bit of history. The National Day of Prayer has been around since 1952. At that point, Congress said that the President, each year, should appoint a day outside of a Sunday to be a day of prayer. But it took about 25 years after that before it became something that was appointed by the President, adopted by Congress and made permanent. That happened when President Clinton was in office. He made the first Thursday in May of each year the National Day of Prayer. That continued to run through a task force that was established to put that up, that event on each year. They've been doing a great job every year. It's a lot of work from behind the scenes to motivate not only what happens in Washington D.C., on that day, but now throughout the entire country, they have a big job on their hands. Our part came on board in 2001, when the prayer team started up to say, you know what, we just want to take our ability to communicate through email … we were one of the pioneers of using email to communicate to Christians in the country, the largest. It grew very rapidly. In fact, in the month of November, after 9-11, we were the most visited .org website in the world because people had an interest in praying at that time for the needs of our country. And from that, we developed a very large group of praying Christians. Our goal was 2.5 million, and we hit that couple years later saying 2.5 million people are consistently praying for our leaders.

So, as we move forward each year when we came to the National Day of Prayer, we said our element or our participation is going to be the online version of what happens in Washington and other parts of our country on that day. Each year, it's been a little bit more a little bit more. This year, we're kind of going all out in creating a virtual prayer room. It's an online room, a personal online room that you can set up and you can sit there in your office, your home, anywhere with a device, a phone device, a tablet a computer and participate in praying for a country. When you go there to this prayer room, you'll see an online prayer guide that will help you go step-by-step through praying from our President on down through government. There's also a hosted portion that's hosted by a man by the name of Dave McMahon, who is on staff. He's one of our announcers that runs our radio program for the stations that we’re on across the country. He has narrated a portion of let's pray together and let's start here and pray for the president; now pray for the President’s family. He kind of coaches you through the process, which allows you to listen, stop where you're at, pray and then continue on. Eventually through about a 10 or 15-minute process, you've been able to pray right through the leadership of our country.

Dr. Steve Greene: That’s good and for my kind of mind so I don’t forget where I am in my prayer.

Jim Bolthouse: It also has a link to a place where you can actually listen to people praying. We have a network of people all across the country that have contacted us and said we'd like to offer this prayer for the National Day of Prayer. We've recorded those prayers. Most of them are our members, but we have Congressman, we have Senators, we have other public officials who have come in and said that we will be a part of this. So, if you turn on the listen-only portion, you can actually hear the network of people praying all over the country, one after another. So, it's a place to be an encouragement. What we normally get is feedback from people who listen to this portion of the event. It’s comforting to know that when I hear somebody praying, they pray and are concerned about the things the same as I am. It makes the world a lot smaller when you can hear Christians with the same concerns and praying the same way. So, that's part of it. It really is an experience that I hope that when they go there, they'll spend 10-15 minutes, a half hour or longer, just taking time to methodically pray for the leaders of our country. And then, of course, we'd love to have them tell their friends because the more that we get people involved, the more we're getting people to pray, and that's our goal. Our goal is to reach anyone who has the living God living within their heart to say, let us help you direct your prayers for leadership. And that's what the Presidential prayer team is all about.

Dr. Steve Greene: OK, so, is that the website? Before we go any further, I really want to get that out here so our listeners can write it down, go ahead and bookmark it so they can find this site. It is presidentialprayerteam.org, correct?

Jim Bolthouse: That's, that's our main ministry website. That's where you can receive, free of charge, all the resources. Our writing team, we have about 17 writers around the country that are writing content of today's activities. If you go to the homepage, you'll see five or six activities that are happening today in the news that have been researched. Then we put prayer points at the bottom of it page and say here's suggested ways you can pray for these things that are happening right now.

Dr. Steve Greene: So. Jim, what you’re telling me is that we could come in every morning to this site and start our morning prayer by praying for our country?

Jim Bolthouse: That's exactly right. And that's what we hope will be there. It's a resource, a free resource. It's underwritten by the love gifts of God's people in the country. There are no commercials, there is no advertising. It's just there for the purpose of ministering to you so that you can minister the country through prayer.

Dr. Steve Greene: So, it changes every morning?

Jim Bolthouse: It changes all day long. When something happens, it's usually up there, within a few minutes after something is happening in the news, we have it up there so that if a person is looking for how to pray about … like for example, the shootings recently that happened in these churches and synagogues in the country. People hear the news, they hear the news, flash and think, OK, I want to pray for them, but how can I pray for them? What what's the best way to pray for them. We quickly put that up on the site saying pray for the first responders, pray for those that are injured. Here's the leader who was shot and here's his family, pray for him and his family. So, we're constantly trying to dig deep and find information that normally people can't read about even on the news, they can't find it. But we dig deep to try and find that so we can make an a very effective prayer life for anyone who participates.
