Dr. Steve Greene: Ruth Schofield launched the national television program, “The Washington Report,” in our nation's capital in 1986 reaching millions of people on 250 cable stations through satellite and it aired in 50 states. She's produced this from the United States Capitol Congressional studios. “The Washington Report” has received five Angel awards for excellence in media. Her weekly Bible teaching program, “Daily Bread,” also aired the gospel on satellite radio across the 20-70 window countries. We've got this great author and teacher with us today on this podcast. I'm excited about it. But I'm more excited to tell you that we're going to be talking about her book that's a part of her Power of the King series. The name of the book is The Power of the King’s Scepter.

I will say after spending the weekend with this book that it's quite a heady treatment. It's simple to understand, but you go in great depth. God had to bless you from on high to write this level of a book. It's so good.

·         Power of the King’s Fire

Ruth Schofield: Thank you. Actually, the book is written out of 40 years of preaching and teaching. I had a Bible teaching program before I went to Washington D.C. with the national program. I was on the CBN network out of Atlanta for years.

Dr. Steve Greene: Tell me about this book. Give us the 30,000-foot view of what you've done with this book.

Ruth Schofield: We have distributed this book through our ministry and some of national TV programs have been able to interview me at times with the book. But it's mostly offered to people on Amazon and anywhere you can buy books. The reason that the book is so valuable is because it gives you understanding without all of the Bible seminary teaching that a lot people don't have patience for. I went through that myself. After I became a Bible teacher, I decided that I would go into seminary. To make it simple, I believe that everyone needs to have a hunger and thirst for the Word of God. That's what's important. Only the Holy Spirit can give you that, a hunger and thirst for Jesus. But with this book and all the others that I have written, I try to make the Word of God simple so that you can understand it on layman's terms.

Dr. Steve Greene: I understand that and what's amazing me about the writing of this book is that you did it while you're working in Washington, D.C. Tell us a little bit about what you do in your day-to-day life.

Ruth Schofield: Our national ministry is located in Washington, D.C, and we're there right on site to keep the nation up in prayer, lift our government leaders. We work a lot, we actually lobby a lot, for religious freedom. I've been instrumental in giving public awareness to a lot of our religious freedom issues. Right now, we're overwhelmed with prayer and activity to push back abortion and to restore the traditional family. We have a lot of major ministries there, so, we work more in the background. We pray, we lobby, we get the word out through the TV and radio.

Dr. Steve Greene: You’re pretty well known in the Beltway. They know you and you are respected. Were you busy last week with the National Day of Prayer?

Ruth Schofield: Yes, and it's just powerful. Of course, all across the nation. I don't know the figures on how many national days of prayer there are across the nation, but the wave of prayer has actually been increasing over the past two years, especially since we needed to save the soul of our nation and the Lord gave us a precedent that some compare him (Donald Trump) to a Cyrus who will promote our religious freedom and he's a Christian himself.

Dr. Steve Greene: We’ve got our nation praying now and we're certainly praying more now than we were four years ago. It's almost a groundswell; we hear so many meetings are going on with us expressed purpose of prayer. Now, if we can just get them to read their Bibles, right?

Ruth Schofield: Exactly. There are a lot of what you call Bible-thumping politicians on Capitol Hill, and I have spent many years in Congress. My TV program came out of the Congress and out of the Senate itself for 16 years. We do need Bible-thumping politicians and. of course, in the body of Christ, there's a saying that was coined years ago, “as the church goes, so goes the nation.” And that is so true. The church needs to be immersed in the Word of God because that's where all authority comes from.

Dr. Steve Greene: You mentioned in your notes, how much research studies are out there showing that Bible study is … people just aren't reading your Bible, let alone going to Bible study groups, perhaps like you and I did when we were growing up. I still have a Wednesday night group I go to, but it's a struggle. It's hard. There are so many things up against it.

Ruth Schofield: We need to understand that we actually are living in Babylon. We need to be like Daniel and his friends who rejected all of the distractions. They were faithful to pray. They were faithful not to enjoy the delectable dainties.

Dr. Steve Greene: But Daniel didn't have Netflix, and that's the difference,

Ruth Schofield: We need to discipline ourselves.

Dr. Steve Greene: You're right. I'm teasing just a little bit to make a conversation, but at the same time, I agree with you. I teach it in my groups, my small groups and my church. We teach it pretty constantly that we just have our priorities … there is so much to do. We have so many choices. We don't have to worry about it. When it gets dark outside, there's still plenty to do. That's different from the days of the Bible.

Ruth Schofield: Sure, absolutely. I was thinking about that as I was going over some things just for another book that I'm looking at. The distractions are so great in our society. In the book of Acts when you read about the church and all through the New Testament, they didn't have those distractions. After Jesus ascended to heaven and the Holy Spirit fell on the day of Pentecost, the only thing they had to do was worship Jesus and pray in the Spirit, and life was simple.

Dr. Steve Greene: Yet still found opportunities to sin and to do the things that we are challenged by. They were tempted in every way as we are, and maybe not to the quantity of temptations that we endure now. But still, the slippage wasn't as great, I think, then as it is now, because there's are many more opportunities. So, tell us about your book, The Power of the King’s Scepter, to help with this battle that you see with a declining readership of the Bible, less interest in all things Christian perhaps, and certainly a degradation of what we do in a pulpit. It's just gotten calmer and easier and try not to make any enemies in the church.

Ruth Schofield: Yes, exactly. Political correctness just destroys any kind of power that the church would have. And yet, that's an area where so many pastors and leaders are afraid to touch because you do end up offending a lot of people. But The Power of the King’s Scepter is really a book that draws you, I believe, and I pray, into a hunger and thirst to go deeper in the Word. And the reason we need to go deeper and just get a spiritual authority really comes from the Word. Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. That’s so powerful because we don't see it that way. We see the words on the page, we see things we don't understand, that if we keep pressing in and just look into the Word and go line by line, or precept by precept, and study it and the Holy Spirit will help us. You really have to read the Word of God with the Holy Spirit. But I began really going deep into the Word by studying subjects like love, hate. I would take days and or weeks and just look up every scripture on love. Then I would look at hate, the other parallel, and I would record them and write them down. This gets into your spirit and you really get a sense of what God wants and expects out of us. We don't have to do the work; the Holy Spirit will do the work.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's right. So, tell us the significance of the King’s scepter itself. What does it represent in biblical terms?

Ruth Schofield: Well, of course, the king’s scepter was the power that the king had. We looked at the scepter to Jesus and the power that he has. He clearly said that the Father had given him all power and authority, and He passed that scepter on to the church. Of course, sometimes we just look at the scepter as the Word of God, but it's actually the presence and the power of our king. When we have the Word of God in us with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, then that scepter, that power and authority extends through us. Essentially, we're learning to rule and reign for the future kingdom, the millennial.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's right. I mean that you couldn't have said it better. I guess what I'm trying to get to understand for our listeners is why you wrote this book. What is it that's compelling you to write this? What's the takeaway? What will people learn from this book?

Ruth Schofield: Well, I wrote the book out of my Bible teaching that I not only did on TV and radio, but I went on foot to Africa to the mission field to a number of African countries. I taught pastors. For example, I visited Dr. Mark Fontaine's Mission of Mercy in Calcutta by his invitation. He had me come and give his itinerant village pastors’ teaching because they couldn't get to Bible college. I went to many countries doing that in Africa as well. I realized the necessity in our lives to understand all of the revelations that the Holy Spirit has given us through the Word. I wrote the books because it was an extension of that mission and on the TV. I realized that people were just getting a drop of water by listening to one of my half-hour programs. When you go to church, you only get a little nugget of what that pastor has inside of him. The Lord calls us His priests. He's our high priest. So, the priests have a duty to follow the high priest and know exactly what's there in His Word. It took over a year to write each book that I have … I’m on number three and it’s just now being printed. It took over a year, but it was 40 years of teaching and it was a lot of study and I thought, who on earth has time to do all of this study? So, I realized that people need a good capsule. I guess you call this a good dose of the Word of God with each chapter.
