Episode Notes

Award-winning worship artist, Don Moen, wants you to know God will make a way. He chats with Charisma’s Dr. Steve Greene about the story behind his song, "God Will Make A Way," which is also the title of his recently released book.
In this episode of Greenelines, learn how God works in ways you cannot see and how His promises will always come to pass. Hope is the key. Listen, someone somewhere is praying for you.

Dr. Steve Greene: At some point in all of our lives, we face what seems to be an insurmountable situation. Some bad things happen to us financially or maybe we or a loved one went to the doctor and got a bad checkup and the doctor said bad things to us and we had to deal with it. Some of us have these things that go wrong in life, and we’ve got to find a way through it and through it is the word I like to use and not to it.

Introducing Don Moen

We’ve got someone with us today that's a very special guest. I think every one of our listeners will know him. His name is Don Moen, and he’s written a great book that copied his music a little bit, “God will make a Way.” We just appreciate your music so much and then we find out not only are you a worship leader and songwriter; a beautiful songwriter, a world class songwriter; but now you’ve written a book after one of my favorite songs.

Don Opines About His Book

It's my first attempt at being an author. I've always people asked me if I was going to write a book and I just said, ‘when I have something to say I'll write a book.’ While I'm touring every night, when I'm on a stage, I find my saying the same things every night, trying to bring hope to those who have lost hope. No matter where I am in the world, in the Middle East and Africa, in Asia, the message that God will make a way almost transcends cultures and denominations and, and even religions.

• Order the book from donmoen.com, and get his Christmas CD in a bundle for only $29.99.

There are a lot of non-Christians, Hindus or Buddhists and Muslims, that come to my concerts and they hear that message, God will make a way. I kept saying lot of the same things over and over again and I finally put it into a manuscript. I got it to a publisher here in Nashville and the first thing they said is we'll definitely not call it God Will Make A Way because the title is too familiar. I said you can call you can call it whatever you want to call it, but I’m going to say the same things. In the end, they came back said they would call it God will make a way.

Don on His Popularity
I was with integrity music 20 years and I was a really busy music executive. My travel was really limited to just a few times a year when I was living in Tulsa. There was a time when I was really seeking the Lord about my music, and in the middle of night it was like somebody spoke to me and I heard someone say, ‘open your Bible and turn to Psalm 40:3.’ I got out of bed I opened my Bible and it said, ‘I have put a new song in your mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see it and fear and put their trust in the Lord.’

I remember sitting in my office thinking it feels as if I was ordained into something. I didn’t even know what it is completely because I had not led worship at that point. I had traveled with a musical evangelistic group, but there was something new the Lord wanted to do. At that moment, it was as if the Lord ordained me into doing what I’m doing today. Doors started opening for me.

About Don’s Music
Worship really does transcend denominations, generations. True worship does. They don't look at the fact that I don’t have all the hot vocal aerobics that a lot of people do, but they connect with a spirit of worship, and I think that’s what connects people with my music everywhere I go.

On His Favorite Don Moen Song
I think it would be “I Just Want to Be Where You Are.” I was 12 years old when I accepted Christ and it's (Psalm 27:4) the very first scripture I underlined in my Bible. I think about that many times, like when I was a 12-year-old boy.

• Psalm 27:4: “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I will seek after, for me to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to see the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.” (MEV)

When I was writing that song, it was a very powerful moment for me. I was alone in somebody's apartment with a piano, and the presence of God was so real and powerful in the room. I was actually afraid it was just so powerful. God put that desire in me as a young boy, and it’s still there today. It's still my favorite song. I sing it all the time, and it's still my prayer. It's my heart. I want to be I want to be where God is.

Struggling to Keep Hope

You go through times where God feels so close to you, and then there are some days it feels like He is a million miles away. And it’s like, what happened? You go through a time of losing a loved one you know and you step out and try to trust God. Maybe it’s a new venture, moving to a different city, and there’s a lot of times when you just wonder what happened.

I was with Integrity Music for 20 years and in my heart, I knew it was time for me to leave. But I had a good job. I was a president of the music label and and yet in my heart I just knew that God was calling me to step out in the water and trust Him again. I resigned and left, and I even wrote a song during those couple of weeks “I Believe There is More” The paychecks stopped coming in and then I then I started writing a song called “Uncharted Territory.” I found myself in uncharted territory and never felt so lost or so lonely I asked, “Where are you Lord,” and I said to my wife one day, ‘Laura honey, if you look at our situation and you look at ours finances and all these things, I should be discouraged. But I feel strangely hopeful. I feel encouraged as if somebody, somewhere is praying for me. And, in spite of what I could see around me, I just felt hope rising up in my spirit. Hope is the key. It’s hard to have faith when you’ve lost hope. I really believe hope is the engine that drives faith. I’ve had those times in my life where I have felt hopeless looking at the situation. But yet, thanks to the prayers of God’s people, hope rises in my spirit and I know God is working in ways that I can't see.

1 Peter 3:15: “Always be ready to give an answer to every man who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, with gentleness and fear.”

Some Final Thoughts from Don

When you start feeling hopeless, I want you to hit play and listen to this message. God will make a way when there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me and that’s what I want. Whether its financial, physical, your marriage, your family relationships, any of those things can rock your world and cause you to wonder where God is. But I want to tell you today that. even at this moment, He is working in ways that you cannot see to make a way when there seems to be no way.
