Introduction

Dr. Steve Greene: My guest on this podcast is Dr. Jerry Johnson. He's the current president and CEO of the NRB. Many of you know the NRB, if you're in the industry at all, it’s the National Religious Broadcasters. It's basically made up of people who are communicators and are serving the community in some way. NRB has changed a lot over the years. I just want to say a little bit about you and your background and academics as a as a theologian and obviously as a leader in colleges and universities. You're a director of the Oxford Distinguished Scholars program, and that's meaningful to me. You’re not the typical type of organization leader for NRB. You've been a real strong theologian throughout your life.

Dr. Jerry Johnson: I think it’s a fit because the first mission of NRB is to establish biblical truth. We know that the Christian faith, the Christian religion is unique in that we emphasize truth; we emphasize teaching and preaching. The reason why Christianity dominates the media is because we have a message. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. So, I think it's a fit if you're a theologian, teacher or a preacher, then Christian media is a very good fit.

Some of the Proclaim 19 Speaker Lineup

·         John MacArthur

·         Philip DeCourcy

·         Charles Stanley

·         Joni Eareckson Tada

·         DeVon Franklin

·         Alex Kendrick

·         Priscilla Shirer

Dr. Steve Greene: Tell us why the average person listening to this podcast, an everyday Christian, some of who are in leadership and some are not, would have an interest in NRB?

Dr. Jerry Johnson: If you could see me right now, I could show it to you because I have to my ear a smartphone. What's changed is NRB began 75 years ago really with radio broadcasters.  But today, because of what you're doing, podcasting, a lot of your people are sending out Facebook messages and tweets and Instagram and Pinterest and blogging, any Christian who is messaging now, social media is really a part of the Christian Broadcasting family and community. For instance, with this conference coming up, we have an entire day called the Digital Media Summit. It's going to be on how to use Facebook and Twitter and YouTube more effectively. Of course, we have a radio day and we have a film day where people can pitch movies. So, it's open to the public and everyone who wants to use their phone or their computer or their camera. Microphone to publish the truth of Christianity, they are very welcome to and they ought to be coming to this conference.

Dr. Steve Greene: Where's the next conference going to be held?

Dr. Jerry Johnson: In Anaheim, right next to Disney, March 26-29.

Dr. Steve Greene: You go from Disney to Disney. You're down here in Orlando quite a bit. Now you're moving to the other Disney.

Dr. Jerry Johnson: We’ve got six exciting films lined up this year. We’ve got people like the Kendrick Brothers, DeVon Franklin, the Erwins. It’s amazing.

Dr. Steve Greene: What do you think it is that draws people to this event year after year? You're gonna have several thousand there. What it what is it that draws us?

Dr. Jerry Johnson: It’s different for everyone. Some people come to learn to get started in radio or how to get started in film or how to be better, more successful with their website or their faith ministry. We have all these technical sessions. But a lot of people come for inspiration. They want to hear the preaching. We've got John MacArthur and Greg Laurie and Rick Warren this year.  Charles Stanley is going to be teaching, Phillip DeCourcy. Others have found out it's actually just about networking. If they sell things, it ends up really about networking. It’s interesting, we have so many teachers and preachers. Some years I’ll see someone like Kay Arthur just walking around or Tony Evans. They are not teaching or preaching. Can you imagine Tony Evans or Kay Arthur going to a conference and not speaking? Or, David Jeremiah or Michael Youssef because this is their deal, their family, their time to be together to talk about what's working what's not working. Many of them do it every few years. We get all of them in a cycle.

Dr. Steve Greene: I remember the last NRB convention we brought our podcast studio with us. We built a platform, we podcasted for two solid days because honestly, I feel like that's where all of us need to be. Blogging is nice, but I'm telling you, the numbers show us … We're almost at 6 million downloads in about three years and the people are listening with that phone you have in your ear now. People are listening to podcasts in their car.

Dr. Jerry Johnson: They are. I was talking to someone the other day about how they get their news. If I mentioned this person they listen to on CNN …. But they said this listen to this person every night on his podcast. I thought that was interesting. There are certain places where they want to get their information today.

Dr. Steve Greene: The Huntley Brinkley report is gone. And I think only and I will know that reference probably, most of my audience. So, what about some of the highlights? What are you happy about this year? What are you excited about?

Featured Films at Proclaim 19

·         Breakthrough

·         Overcomer

·         Roe v Wade

·         Unplanned

Dr. Jerry Johnson: I mentioned some of it already. We’ve got a film by DeVon Franklin called Breakthrough. We’ve got Overcomer, which is the new Kendrick Brothers film. We’ve got Roe v Wade, which is going to delve into the story of that decision, a pro-life film. We’ve got another one called Unplanned … that’s the story of Abby Johnson, who worked at the Planned Parenthood clinic and she became convicted and changed and is a pro-life activist now. We’ve got other kinds of films, one called the Children of Shanghai, it’s about a ministry to orphans in China. And then of course The Chosen, which is great new TV series about the life of Christ. So a lot of innovation name films. But, of course, preaching from Greg Laurie and John MacArthur, Rick Warren, Philip DeCourcy, Bobby Shuler. It’s a really good lineup of teachers and preachers; Charles Stanley. It’s a good draw. And then we have First Amendment experts like Kelly Shackleford and Brad Baker talking about the threats to the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press. So there's gonna be tools for the legal battles that are out there. … One of the biggest things is the networking. If you want to break into film or into radio or social media, this is the place to come and figure it out.

Dr. Steve Greene: So obviously this is a big year. This is your 75th anniversary. We're so excited to still be breathing and able to celebrate this. So, what are your thoughts of how far the association has come, your role in it and what you see coming? Just the broad-range question. This is 75. What does that mean?

Dr. Jerry Johnson: I think that's fascinating because NRB began in the 1940s because Christian teachers and preachers were taken off the air, off the radio. Most people don't know this story. It's a long story, but in any case, those teachers and preachers got together and said, ‘let's get back on the air. Let's form an association. Let's go to Washington. Let's appeal to Congress and the administration and let's get back on the air. And, they did within two or three years. As you know, Christian teaching and preaching dominates radio and has for many, many years.  We've come full circle. The way people are doing media now is largely through their phone or certainly over the Internet. They're accessing a lot on social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram also YouTube, and they're doing things like a Go Fund Me and Amazon, the Amazon smiles program. What we're finding is that conservative and Christian content is being deliberately censored. We have a project at NRB called Internet Freedom Watch. In fact, your listeners could go to that website. It's called internetfreedomwatch.org and that will show you that this isn't a hoax. As congressman Jerry Nadler said, ‘Oh, there's no there's no censorship of conservative and Christian content. You look at this and you will see. Beginning with Chuck Colson in 2010, the Manhattan Declaration, all the way up. Franklin Graham, just three or four weeks ago. You're going to see Congress, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Mike Huckabee, Phil Robertson … you're going to see Todd Starnes, you're going to see a virtual who's who of the conservative and Christian movement that's been censored on Facebook or Twitter or YouTube … people like Dennis Prager. So, it's happening. It's sort of NRB coming back full circle in 75 years to a new censorship challenge. But we're ready, and we're engaged well.

They are shadow banning, their ghosting, they're also manipulating search results. So, there are a lot of different ways and we're calling for more congressional hearings in this session. If people go to that internetfreedomwatch.org, they'll see the timeline and see the strategy to combat it.
