Introduction

When we lost Ossie Mills to a fatal heart attack a couple days ago, it made me recall my own heart incident and the subsequent bypass surgery. This morning, I woke up wishing that Ossie would have had the opportunity to extend his life in the same way I was given. I continue to learn about extending my life through better eating and exercise. But I'll tell you, it sure is difficult to make life changes. I'll tell you this, it's impossible to make changes without life. I believe this podcast has been appointed by the Lord for a time such as this just for this moment. Maybe it's for me. But I think for a lot of you that are listening, you're going to be blessed by my guest. I don't think it's a coincidence at all to have the privilege to interview Dr. Don Colbert today about his latest book concerning life extension and feeling full of energy in the journey. I've been looking forward to this interview for several weeks, and my attention to every word he has to say today has certainly been piqued. Dr. Colbert is a Board-Certified family practitioner for over 25 years. He's also board certified in anti-aging. He has received extensive training in nutritional and preventive medicine. He’s s also the author of two New York Times best-selling books and, hold on for this on, he has sold over 10 million books. He joins us today to discuss his newest book, Dr. Colbert's Hormone Health Zone. You've written so much on health and taking care of ourselves. What prompted you to write this book on hormone health?

Dr. Don Colbert: Mainly what I was finding was so many of my patients, as they got older as they were 70 and 80, their energy went down, their muscle mass went down, their strength went down, they started losing their memories, they got feeble and many ended up in a nursing home. Because of that, I said well, this shouldn't be. I have been doing hormone balancing for over three decades. But over the last decade, I've been doing optimization of hormones where I bring their hormone levels to that of a young man or young woman; especially testosterone and thyroid, those are the two keys. When I do that, we reverse frailty, which is so common in older people. Osteoporosis starts to be reversed, and then testosterone protects the brain and actually helps to preserve those brain neurons and repair those neurons as well as it decreases inflammation in the brain, increases blood flow in the brain and increases neurotransmitters. There's so much that it does that I needed to get the word out. It is so powerful in what it does. I've called it the eighth pillar of health. I wrote a book years ago called the Seven Pillars of Health and I call this the eighth pillar.

·         The Bible Cure of Autoimmune Diseases

·         Dr. Colbert’s Guide to Vitamins and Supplements: Be Empowered to Make Well-Informed Decisions

Dr. Steve Greene: So what areas does hormone optimization actually treat? What is it going to work on?

Dr. Don Colbert: First of all, for both men and women, the main thing it does is it’s going to help increase energy levels. As people age, the biggest thing I see is a decrease in energy. We optimize that testosterone. the energy level for both men and women increases. It also is one of most powerful anti-inflammatories for the body. It decreases inflammation and decreasing inflammation, many times pain, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, all kinds of arthritis is usually relieved or improved significantly as well as a strength and stamina and muscle mass increases, which helps everyone from middle-aged men to great grandmamas who are getting frail and feeble. But it also increases like I said, the bone; the bone strength. I reverse a lot of patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis just by getting their testosterone levels optimized. It protects the brain. It is one of the best things or one of the most important hormones as well as substances out there that protects the brain from Alzheimer's. Studies have shown that women that start testosterone around menopause delay menopause by at least 10 years. Testosterone protects the brain. It also improves depression in men and women. It is what I call the most amazing natural antidepressant I've ever seen because it boosts the three key neurotransmitters: dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. I have reversed so many patients with depression by just optimizing testosterone using natural thyroid to optimize thyroid and then by putting them on a few key supplements and getting them to sleep.

Dr. Steve Greene: Yes, that helps. I know there's a lot of bad literature out there about hormone therapy. There's a lot of real odd misconceptions. Would you clear some of those up for us? The big ones?

·         Don Colbert: Beat Down Stress with the Word

·         Don Colbert: Add This to Your Exercise Routine

·         Here’s Why Don Colbert Says ‘No’ to Meat Temporarily

Dr. Don Colbert: The biggest one was the Women's Health Initiative back in 2002. That's the hormone study that had well over 100,000 women in it. They found that their synthetic hormones which was progestin, and Premarin, which is comes from pregnant mare’s urine, cause an increase in heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and breast cancer. Then they re-analyzed the data and they found that the Premarin only, which was the horse’s estrogen which is not a human estrogen, actually they looked back and they found that those women on Premarin only and not to progestin, had a 23 to 33 percent decrease risk of breast cancer, but an increased risk of blood of heart attacks and strokes. So again, what happened is after that, most doctors quit prescribing hormones, which was good because they were describing the wrong hormones, not the bio-identical hormones, which are the protective hormones. But they've looked back at this. They, estimated as many as 91,000 women died over those last 10 years as a result from osteoporosis, dementia and other diseases by not having adequate amounts of hormones. A major thing testosterone does is it protects women against breast cancer. Also normalizing testosterone protects man against prostate cancer, which is confusing for most men, because for years, we thought it actually could trigger prostate cancer, but it's actually protective.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's good to know for guy my age. And many of our listeners are all battling with various things like this, the symptoms of perhaps an imbalance or hormones.

Dr. Don Colbert: That's what we see every day in my practice. I've seen patients come with a sometimes a laundry bag full of medications, you know Staten drugs, and they wonder why they're exhausted, they wonder why they're having all these health problems. It’s because the side effects of medicines create so many other problems that they have to treat those usually with more medications. I talk about in my book too how adverse reactions to meds were the fourth-leading cause of death one year in the U.S. and the third-leading cause another year of death in the U.S. behind heart disease and cancer. America is heavily medicated and because of all these medicines, so many Americans are suffering from so many side effects and they're losing their energy, their mental clarity, their zest for life. As a result, there ended up sick on many, many meds. The latter years of their lives are spent many times in nursing home.

Dr. Steve Greene: I don't want that, not for me. I certainly don't want to lose my brain. I can lose energy, I can live with that. But when it starts threatening my mental capacity, that gets worrisome.

Dr. Don Colbert: Absolutely. But we have wonderful things we can do to protect the brain. Again, I put the patient on the right diet, an anti-inflammatory diet, because Alzheimer's or dementia is just inflammation of the brain as well as insulin resistance of the brain or a form of type 2 diabetes of the brain as well as a few key supplements and these powerful biogenical hormones along with the seven pillars of health. It's real simple, and so I made it so easy. We don't need near as many supplements. Before optimizing of hormones, we used to have to give lots of supplements. Now we don't have to give nearly as much. You mentioned about the fellow that died of a heart attack. We reverse those risk factors for heart disease. We've been doing this for years, but now we're finding we're actually starting to reduce and reverse the plaque in the arteries.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's because that was my problem.

Dr. Don Colbert: Right. One of the big things that happens almost everyone after age 50, they start to calcify their arteries, and their bones start to de-mineralize. It just so happens that there's a vitamin, vitamin K2 to in the form of MK7, that helps to put calcium back in the bones, but it keeps takes calcium out of the arteries. We've got so many really neat supplements that literally work with your body without causing harmful side effects. They really benefit you tremendously when combined with hormone optimization and the right diet.

How to Feel 25 Again with Dr. Don Colbert (Season 5, Ep. 40)
