Introduction

This is the Greenelines podcast. I'm Steve Greene on the Charisma Podcast Network. I wanted to tell you about a book offer I have that just became available at this price. I wrote a book about leadership, but it's also about leading in the home and leading in relationships. The name of the book is Love Leads, and it is available to you today. For $11.95, that's a special price. We haven't offered that price, ever. And there's free shipping attached to that. So, it's $11.95 and free shipping. Here's where you can get it: loveleads.charisma mag.com Here it is again. Loveleads.charisma mag.com. It’s $11.95 and free shipping.

Dr. Steve Greene: I've long believed that the gospel is written in the stars. How else will they know unless the heavens declare the glory of God. Think about that in the days of sitting out back because there was nothing to do inside; it was dark. It was literally pre-light, and you got your light and your knowledge, and you were instructed from your parents, grandparents, and stories were told, as the firmament passed by night after night, the story advanced, because I believe the gospel is written in the stars. I'm so excited to introduce you to a guest that has written a book about it. I about jumped up and down when I got the book in the mail to know that someone else believes this because I really believe the scripture supports the story that you're going to hear today and the great word that was written by our guest, Pastor Joe Amaral.

I believe our audience is sitting at the edge of their seat with their headphones stuck in real close because I think they want to hear this story. The title of the book is Story in the Stars: Discovering God's Design and Plan for Our Universe. That topic by itself will attract a crowd. If we run an ad in the newspaper and say, come listen to why we believe the gospel is written in the stars will attract a crowd. People will come and listen to that.

Pastor Joe Amaral: Yes, for sure. As I've been traveling around to different churches and conferences, this is what we're seeing … not just people of faith, but people who follow horoscopes and astrology and people who are atheists and creationists and all of these are the kinds of viewpoints, they want to come out. They find this fascinating because this isn't like your usual Sunday morning topic. So, I think already the topic is a draw. I'm praying today for the people who are listening. Maybe somebody sent them a link and said, you’ve got to check this out. Maybe it's not even believers yet and they're listening today. I'm praying that they're going to be touched by what they hear.

Dr. Steve Greene: What brought you to this study? I know what my trip was, how I got here. I'm curious as to how you came to understand the scripture this way. And by the way, do you show pictures of the constellations when you preach, with slides and pointers, and show the stars because that's the only way you can do this, right?

·         First Century Foundations

Pastor Joe Amaral: Yes, it’s a very visual presentation. You come into a an evangelical, a Pentecostal spiritual church, and you start throwing in Virgo, and Sagittarius up on the screen and people are like, who is this guy? What's he doing here? I always tell people to stay with me, just stay with me. Let me show you some scripture here. When I start naming zodiac signs from the Bible, they're like, well, I knew I knew it was there, but I never made the connection.

Dr. Steve Greene: They surely don't memorize the Scripture about constellations.

Pastor Joe Amaral: No, it's a shock to them when they see that, the oldest book in the Bible, maybe humanity, actually mentions constellations and planets by name. Jesus talks about the stars and different authors do. People are shocked. By the end of the day, they’re like, oh my goodness, God really did put His story in the stars. Like you said in the opening of the podcast today, you’re sitting back and you're watching these constellations go in and out every month and there's nothing to do; it's pre light. They're sitting outside and they are looking at the stars and wondering, what do they mean? What an incredible way to tell the story, using these images night after night, month after month, year after year. It's God's way of ensuring that no matter where in space and time you live, if you can look up at the sky and see these images, you can see the sequence like a comic strip as they move along. You can see a story begins to unfold. There is only one person who comes even remotely close to capture it all, and that's Jesus, the Son of God.

Dr. Steve Greene: That's right. You know, I love these people that say there's nothing written in the stars, and yet at Christmas time, they all speak of that star. You know, the Bethlehem star. And of course, we know why that's true and where that star exists in the constellation. We've got a pretty good idea of timing and what they saw.

Pastor Joe Amaral: There is a whole chapter in the book where we talk about this this star, what was it and why do these so-called wise men from the East, these Magi, why would they risk life and limb to go across the desert to follow this crazy star? There’s something very important about that, for sure.

Dr. Steve Greene: Another amazing thing is we know that people don't just look at it, there was some teaching that went on. That there was a heritage. It was the teachers, the rabbi's taught what they saw in the sky. They knew what it was knew the Messiah was coming, and there was just a great understanding as they saw the stars pass by. They had their version of the New Testament in front of them.

·         Genesis 1:14: And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs to indicate seasons, and days, and years” (MEV).

Pastor Joe Amaral: It's interesting. The Bible says that the Greeks seek knowledge, but the Jews always seek a sign. So, it was no surprise that God would use signs like literal signs, as Genesis says in 1:14. The sun, moon and stars will serve as signs to mark these sacred and these holy days. So, when we see the signs in the skies and God is trying to get this new message of a coming Redeemer to his people, the Jewish people, we shouldn't be surprised that He does this. I live here in Toronto and there is this synagogue, a big synagogue in town that I went to recently for a meeting. I walked in and all the stained-glass windows had the constellations, the different zodiacs. I was blown away because I was like, this isn't this isn't an old synagogue. This is only a few years old and I asked the rabbi, why do you have the zodiac signs on your windows? He goes, because they are there evidence of God. I said, how so? And he began to share with me how, from a Jewish perspective, the signs of what we call the Zodiac or the constellations, they actually they reek of intelligent design because the sequence in which they emerge month after month for an eternity, there's no way that it could be coincidental. There's design, there’s intent, in a story being told. What blew me away a rabbi here in town told me that.

Dr. Steve Greene: You know that the writers saw the same stars that we see. But they saw them better because the lighting wasn't there. They were taught. I can see it and could understand it because I lean on this verse. The heavens declare the glory of God. How else will they know? I haven't told you. You are accountable, the story is right there, you're accountable. But unfortunately, we don't see those stars like our forefathers did.

·         Psalm 19:1:The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork” (MEV).

Pastor Joe Amaral: No, we don't see them. And even when we do see them, the story has been so tainted by the enemy in taking the focus off of the constellations as they point to Christ. What he has done is he's taken them and having them point back to us. Somehow, when we look at them, we look for meaning in our lives, right? We look for direction in our lives. And so, we have these horoscopes. But that's not what God designed them for at all. That was never his intent. If the enemy knows that the gospel is literally written in the heavens, he's going to distort that as quick as he can because he doesn't want the focus to be on the Savior. I love that you brought up you know Psalm 19 because that is that's the whole cornerstone of the message for me. We read that verse and everybody knows the first part, that we say the heavens declare the glory of God. But we stop there. People see a beautiful full moon or on a moonless night you can see sometimes the arm of the Milky Way and you can see all these beautiful constellations and we say, wow, look, it declares God's glory. But we stop there. There's more to the verse. It says that the heavens declare the glory of God, but it says that they also proclaim, day after day speech, and they also reveal knowledge. When? Night after night, but they don't use any words. So, what's in the night sky that's giving us information every night without using any words? It is the constellations and the signs … these pictures, right? We say that a picture's worth 1,000 words. Well, God put 48 pictures in the night sky. What really got me is how the Bible says that all of creation exists to declare what? The glory of God. So, whatever the glory of God is, that's why creation exists. It's there to show us His glory, to proclaim it. Well, you do a little bit of research in the Bible and you realize that the glory of God is not a thing, it's not an experience. It's not a day on the calendar. But according to Hebrews 1:3, the glory of God is Jesus, the Son of God, who's God's glory as an exact representation. So, hang on a second. The heavens are declaring the glory of God. The heavens are literally declaring Jesus night after night. We need to make that connection.

Dr. Steve Greene: I think there are many that have. One of the best signs that I have, you mentioned it just a bit, is that it was camouflaged. Satan took this thing and made astrology out of it, and created something that many people are guided by. They look for these things, to tell them how to live their day, and they read their horoscope. There are things like that, that God meant for good that has almost been clouded. The truth is clouded by this perversion of the story.

·         Jeremiah 8:2: And they will spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped. They will not be gathered, nor be buried. They will be as dung upon the face of the earth” (MEV).

Pastor Joe Amaral: Isn't that what the enemy does? He can’t create, so all he can do is take the truth that exists and he can twist it. So, every lie has an element of truth to it or else we wouldn't believe it. I want to be very clear, because I know where you stand on this and I want people to make sure I'm on the same side of this conversation. I am totally against horoscopes, the following of your signs, looking for direction. In fact, the Bible is crystal clear on this. When I was searching through the Old Testament, I found in in Jeremiah 8:2, God gives a strong warning and uses very vivid language describing what he thinks about people who follow stars. He says to Jeremiah, anybody who loves, serves follows or consults the sun, moon or stars. God says I won't bury you and I won't even raise you up. But I will leave you like dung, a human waste on the ground. God puts the seeking of stars for information on the same level of human dung. I don't know about you, but that's a pretty powerful illustration for God to give.

Dr. Steve Greene: I don't think he's mincing any words there at all. I think it's pretty clear.

Pastor Joe Amaral: No, he's very clear. So, I want people to know that you and I, we are not in any way endorsing horoscopes. In fact, it’s the other way around. We're looking at the sun, moon and stars to point us to Christ, right? That's what the heavens do the declare Him. You don’t want anything to camouflage the gospel.
