Holy Spirit Helps Our Faith (319)

01 Once again, I would like to welcome you to the Quality Christian Living Podcast. I am your host, David Friend. We're in our series entitled, The Holy Spirit. I don't know how you can have anything more powerful than speaking about the Holy Spirit, so I believe the Lord has drawn us to that. And today we're going to talk about the Holy Spirit and how he brings faith into our life. So we're going to look at these areas today. How does the Holy Spirit increase our faith? Is it possible to become a Christian without the Holy Spirit? And why are faith and the Holy Spirit inseparable? One last thing we need to get into and that is this question of is faith possible without the Holy Spirit? So there's a lot to cover. We're going to get into a lot of ground, but I believe the Lord's got something very special intended.

45 So I pray that you'll be blessed. So let's pray now for this podcast. Heavenly Father, we love you so much. I thank you for who you are and I thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit who lives and dwells in all believers. So I pray now that the Holy Spirit would come forth and take control. I surrender this podcast to him. I ask that he would guide and direct my thoughts, my comments. I'm going to make a pretty bold statement to start this thing off and that is this. This could be one of the most powerful, best podcast that you have ever listened to.

33 Now, why can I say that? How can I say that? Is that boasting? No, it's not. Is it pride? No, it's not. The reason I said that is because the power of the Holy Spirit can take us to new levels that we've never seen before. My answer to that statement about being the best podcast is simply this. This podcast can change lives if I yield. to the leading of the Holy Spirit and if you yield yourself and your thought and your mind to the Holy Spirit, we will have a connection that only God can put together. So that's why I made that statement to God be all the glory and God be all the honor and praise and I take no credit for anything that takes place in this podcast because it's only by you.

15 It's not by might or by power, but it's by your spirit that things really great and glorious happen. So let's move on. The Bible gives us a great example of how the Holy Spirit can do great things. In the book of Zechariah in chapter 4 verse 6 in the New Living Translation, we read about Zerubbabel who was trying to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. The Spirit of God gave these words in Zechariah, it was written down, 4, 6, in the New Living Translation. So he said unto me, this is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel, not by might nor by power, but by my spirit says the Lord Almighty. You see, we really can't accomplish anything compared to what God can accomplish.

02 God's ways in the book of Isaiah chapter 55, it says his ways are greater than his thoughts are greater. They're higher than ours. Everything he does is far greater than anything we can ever imagine or think. However, when he said that, That's talking about people who operate in the flesh compared to what he operates. But however, when we operate by being led by the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, then we have the power of God operating in us, that we can do great and mighty things, not in our own power, not in our own ability, but in the power and strength of our Lord. And the anointing that the Holy Spirit comes down, great things happen. pray for these podcasts when we get started for the 300 this is my 319th now in a little over three and a half years God's blessed it every time we start there's one thing that I've always asked the Holy Spirit to help me to do and that is to remember to bring him into it and ask him to take control to take charge to run whatever we're doing because when he's in control great things happen and that's how we have to look at the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is the one that brings power to our life he's the one that that increases the faith in our life and and helps us to be able to accomplish things far greater than what we are and who we are.

09 That's why we need the working and the leading and the power of the Holy Spirit in our life. I tell you, that'd make a good sermon right there. I could kind of package some of that up and go preach someplace. All right, these words that I'm talking about... about the Holy Spirit are not our thoughts and not our actions. But when the Holy Spirit speaks and gives us something, we've got to yield to His thoughts and take His actions. And when we are led by the Holy Spirit, great things will happen. I hope everyone who's listening in really understands that when we are led by the Holy Spirit, we are literally being led by God Himself. God, through Jesus, sent the Holy Spirit to come to earth to be our help, our comforter, and to be with us and to get us through every challenge that we face in our life. So, let me just pray. I just feel like this particular podcast might be filled with prayers because the Holy Spirit is, I believe, is working in a very special way. Heavenly Father, I need to pray against... any self -credit in this and that the Holy Spirit comes to anoint this podcast and that He receive all glory and all praise and all honor for what He's about to do. I pray that I will yield to the Holy Spirit for direction in anything I say or do in answering the questions that we may have as we go through this podcast and how the Holy Spirit brings forth faith and how He helps us to have greater faith by His encouragement, by His comfort in the things that He does in our life. I pray that we will not take control but we will allow the Holy Spirit to take control and lead the words that are being

40 said today and lead the thoughts and minds the way people are going to receive what's said today. And I pray that the thoughts of those who are listening in today will be blessed in Jesus' name. They'll be encouraged in Jesus' name. They'll receive power that they maybe never have experienced before. The anointing of God will come down upon them now and they will be filled with your power and your understanding and your clarity and guidance and direction. As we go through this podcast, Father, I pray that the Holy Spirit would help people to sort out decisions they're trying to make and questions in their mind about the Word of God or about the Holy Spirit that they'll be answered in power today and answered by the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit as we read the scriptures and as we speak about the power and how the Holy Spirit helps to bring faith into our lives. So Lord, I pray that you would bless it now that you'd receive glory for everything that's going to take place today and I thank you Lord for redirecting my thoughts and for helping those who are seeking clarity of the working and the power of the Holy Spirit and I pray that the Holy Spirit will help me to answer any questions that might come into my mind as they're led and anointed by the Holy Spirit and he brings whatever he brings forth I want to bring that forth to those who are listening in today and I ask for all these things and I give you all the glory and praise for it in Jesus name I pray amen Well, there's a wonderful scripture that I think I should read right now to kind of keep this podcast going in the direction I believe the Lord wants. It's found in Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 8. It says, for by grace

10 you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God. Well, God's Word is filled with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of examples of gifts and promises that he has for followers of Jesus Christ. And one of those gifts is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell inside of each and every believer. And it's only by God's grace that this happens. And it's only by God's grace that we're saved. It's not through faith that we're saved. We're saved through the grace of God. And then the faith comes into us being led by the Holy Spirit to help us receive the Word of God. You know, a lot of people say, well, how do I lead someone to Jesus? Well, I don't think you can lead people to Jesus. You can...

51 pray for them, because I do that all the time, you can tell them what they need to say and all that, but bottom line, the Holy Spirit is the only way that a person can receive the faith they need to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. And so... We've got to rely on the Holy Spirit for every aspect of our life, the work that we do, our marriages, our family, or anything that we take part of in our church, any activities that we do. We need to be led by the power of the Holy Spirit because God gave us the Holy Spirit to strengthen us. He gave us the Holy Spirit to take us into new realms and new areas that we can't even imagine or even think. That's how glorious it is to be led by the power of the Holy Spirit. So the goal of this whole podcast, this whole new series on the Holy Spirit is really to help people understand what it means to be led by the power of God, what it means to walk in the Spirit, what it means to, not that we're going to live perfect, not that we're going to have all the answers when this is all done, but we serve the one who has all the answers. The one who has all the answers actually is living and dwelling in each and every believer, and so all we have to do is call upon him and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal himself and to let us know what we should say and where we should go. I think that should even start in our life when we get up in the morning. I get up and I have my coffee and after I have a little breakfast I have a dedication and a devotional that I read and scriptures I read and I pray for certain people in the church that the Lord has put up on my heart. Just a number of things I do. It's probably a process of about... 20 or 30 minutes.

18 It's something that means a lot to me. But as I do that, I don't even like to get into that unless I ask the Holy Spirit to help me and guide me and lead me and direct who I'm praying for and how much I should pray. And then when I go out to get in my car, I don't want to drive out of the driveway until I ask the Holy Spirit to guide the path, the direction I'm going to take. And sometimes I'll be driving down the road and all of a sudden I feel the... really the presence of the Lord. It's nothing spooky or anything. It's just simply this wonderful guidance. And they'll say, take a different route to work. And I'm going like, OK, I'm not sure I know why, but maybe take a different path to a place that I'm going to go to instead of going down the same street. Maybe turn on a different street and move. And every time that happens, something is revealed to me. I'll drive by somebody's house that I haven't seen in a long time. And I'll think, oh, that's right. They live there. I need to call them. That's the Holy Spirit helping me. to remind me that I need to listen to Him.

09 And as I drive by that person's house, I need to write it down and remind myself to call that person. And I believe the Lord can do that with our life and can guide us and direct us. And it doesn't happen every time that I drive out of the driveway, but there are many times that all of a sudden I'll take a turn and go a different direction, maybe on my way to something. And sure enough, I'll find something in that road that I'm on that reminds me of something I need to do or I forgot to do. or something that I should reactivate in my life. And so it's just something that's so wonderful. It's simple, it's easy, there's not a lot of pressure, there's nothing spooky about it. It's just simply the power of God who wants to guide and direct our lives. And I'm so thankful when the Lord wakes me up, is kind of how I like to call it, he reminds me of something that I should do that I haven't done, and I thank the Lord for that. Now as we move on, the Holy Spirit brings truth. Now we know that because the Word of God tells us that.

04 We also know it in our own spirit when we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior because we have the Holy Spirit come to dwell in us and we certainly have more clarity on what is truth and what is false. What truth, what real truth is and what false things are and we know what, we even identify sin, what's sin and what's not sin. and it's clearer for us because we have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us. So the Holy Spirit brings truth to us. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and our need to receive forgiveness. There's not a person out there that's received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior that hasn't sinned afterwards. You're not perfect and flawless. You do things or say things or act in ways that we shouldn't act. And I believe the Holy Spirit is inside of us and helps us and reminds us.

48 Now, you need to call that person back and apologize or tell them I'm sorry. I said that because that's something that needs to be cleared up, and the Holy Spirit gives us that. You know, a lot of people say, well, I don't hear from the Holy Spirit. I don't know what he's speaking to me and whatever, and I have to disagree with that. I think any follower of Jesus Christ... often has the Holy Spirit speaking to them. Now, it's not an audible voice. I've never heard the voice of God, an audible voice of God, but I believe the Holy Spirit speaks to me and I hear from what God wants in me in my life by Him speaking to me, like telling me that I need to do this or I need to call someone or I need to go back and clarify something or I need to apologize to someone or I need to call someone that I haven't talked to in a long time just to let them know that God loves them and God cares for them. That's the working of the Holy Spirit and He's working in each and every one of us and He is speaking to us that way and encouraging us to take action in one way or another. The Holy Spirit is drawing us in a way that only God can do it. You see, we have faith to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, but the only reason we do have that is because the Holy Spirit is the one who draws us. The Bible tells us very clearly that no one comes to know Jesus Christ unless the Holy Spirit draws them. That's the work that He has to do.

01 So I can lead people to, like they say, I can lead a horse to water. but you can't make them drink? Well, I can lead people to Jesus, but they have to drink of the Holy Spirit and receive that refreshment from the Holy Spirit to sacrifice self and die to self and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Now, it is not possible to become a Christian without the Holy Spirit. I mean, it is. It's not possible, because the Word of God tells us that, and I think that's a very important point we need to understand. And that's one of the ways that faith and the Holy Spirit work together, because without the Holy Spirit, we wouldn't never be able to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Now following really are a few scriptures showing how the Holy Spirit helps our faith, how He encourages us and blesses us so that we will have greater faith. Now I've played back a couple little areas in here to listen to my voice. I do that from time to time just to see that it's clear and it's being received properly and I notice... that I sound a little either nasal at times and I'm having a little bit of a respiratory thing here. It's just a little allergy thing. So I'm not sick. I don't have a cold or anything. But my voice has changed a little bit. And I just think because I was outside this morning and something flying around in the air decided to mess me up. So let's take authority over that. Father, I pray that you would clear up my throat, clear up my speaking, and remove this thing that's trying to mess up my podcast today and the clarity of it. So I pray you would and I receive that in Jesus' name.

26 Amen. All right, let's move on. Romans chapter 8 and verse 26 has a wonderful scripture. It's in New Living Translation. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. Well, that's a wonderful statement. That alone shows you how he helps us to have greater faith. You know, it's basically saying that the Holy Spirit will come in and help us no matter what we're going through, whatever challenges we have, whether we have a physical problem, whether we're having a financial problem, whether we're having an issue. in our marriage or with raising our children or whatever it might be, the Holy Spirit wants to come in and help us and guide and direct us. And so when you read Romans 8 26, that applies to every area of our life. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.

08 So whenever we are weak in some area, we become strong in Christ because our weakness is overtaken and overpowered by the power and leading of the Holy Spirit to help us to accomplish what we need to accomplish and to help us have the faith for our healing or have the faith for a child or challenges that we're going through. It's only by faith that we can live up to so many of the scriptures that we read. When the Apostle Paul wrote Philippians chapter 4 verse 6 and he says, to be anxious for nothing but everything through prayer, petitions with thanksgiving, let your requests made known to God. It says, in the peace of God that passeth us all understand, will guard our hearts and mind in Christ Jesus. When He wrote that, He was being led of the Holy Spirit. When we read that, if we're not being led of the Holy Spirit, we just won't receive that. We'll just go right back and being anxious and worrying and all those kinds of things. But when we receive that and we allow those words to strengthen our heart, our body, soul, and spirit, then we can then have the power through the Holy Spirit to rise above those conditions and those challenges that we're facing. And that is the... with the way the Holy Spirit works in us by us relying upon Him. All right, here's another scripture, John chapter 16 and verse 13. Jesus said these words in the New Living Translation, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. Well, I mentioned a little bit about that earlier in the podcast, but what I'm referring to here is that when the Spirit of truth comes, that means you know if you're seeking for truth, the Holy Spirit will bring only truth to you. He doesn't bring lies.

33 He doesn't bring falsehoods. He doesn't... try and make things look different than what they really are, the Holy Spirit brings truth to us. Now the devil is the liar, the thief, the one who comes to kill, to steal, and destroy. But then Jesus said, and he said it in John 10, 10, but I've come to give you life and give it to you more abundantly. And when we live that abundant life, we're being led to the Holy Spirit. Abundant living is... Holy Spirit -led living. And a lot of people think abundant living is how much money you have in the bank. No, that can be a little tiny piece of it, but true abundant living is being led by the Holy Spirit and operating in the divine will of God. Now, you ought to write that down, I believe. That's something we need to repeat in our own heart and mind each and every day. That's how God wants to work in our life and wants to bring the power of the Holy Spirit to operate in each and every believer.

20 Now, in addition to that scripture in John, the Bible says in John 16, 13 also, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit will tell you, quite frankly, about the future. He's telling you what's going to happen. And you say, You're kidding me. You mean he can tell what's going to happen in the future? Well, let's put it this way. The Holy Spirit knows what's going to happen in the future. And he warns us to protect us about what we're going to face in the future. He tells us to eat better so we'll be healthier in the future. He tells us to pray and seek the Lord so we'll be led of God in the future. He tells us that we should be peacemakers and settle disputes quickly because he knows that in the future that'll be a blessing to you. So the Holy Spirit is God in the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, all one. God, the Holy Spirit knows what's going to happen in the future and he's trying to help us and prepare us so that we'll be able to know how to deal with things properly in the future. I think maybe sometimes we don't realize the power that he has that he really knows what's going to be taking place.

20 Let me give you an example of how I've experienced the Holy Spirit helping me for something in the future. A doctor once diagnosed me with a need for surgery. and it was in my back. And it was not a life or death situation, but it was a very serious one that it could affect my ability to even walk. And it was something that the doctor needed to talk to me about and said, well, the only way this is going to be cleared up is if you just go and have this surgery and we got you scheduled. Matter of fact, tomorrow we can take you in. And I was at the hospital and he said, you know, that's what I want to do. And I just looked at him and I said, I don't think so. And my wife was with me, and she said, I don't think so either. And I said, I think, Doctor, what we need is a little time to pray and seek the Lord and make sure that we have His wisdom, His guidance. See, I believe that was the Holy Spirit telling me. Maybe you're going to have surgery, maybe you're not, but not now. Why don't you just do what the word says, go to the Lord first and ask for help? So I told the doctor that, and he said, we know this is serious. If this thing doesn't clear up, you could have a serious problem in your life. And I said, no, we understand that, but let us have some time.

17 That's the Holy Spirit telling me to stop. Now, there's some times when someone tells you to do something, you go right into it, and sometimes it works out well, and other times it doesn't. In this particular case, I knew that it was better not to have surgery than to have surgery in this case. So therefore, we prayed, we sought the Lord for it, and then we told him, is there anything we can do in the meantime? And he said, well, I could put you on some antibiotics to help you. And I said, OK, let's do that. So he put me on the antibiotics, and over a period of a couple of months, everything cleared up. And finally, the doctor looked at me and said, basically, it's all cleared up. There's nothing there. He said, I'm amazed, he said, because the antibiotics I gave you was just to keep it from getting worse. It wasn't really intended that everything would clear up and there would be no problem. I didn't think the infection would. ever be removed without surgery. He said, but that's happened and it's cleared and it's healed and the Holy Spirit's the one that gets the credit for that because he told us to stop and to pray and seek the Lord and see what he wants us to do. And the surgeon then basically said, well, I have to agree with you. You made the right decision. And we just give God all the glory and praise for it. Never had to have the surgery and I believe in Jesus' name will not have to ever have it. You see, looking back on that story, I even know that the The Holy Spirit knew what was going to happen.

31 He knew the future because He's God and the person of the Holy Spirit. And He knew what was going to happen. If I listened and obeyed to His voice, then He had a wonderful plan for me. Here's another scripture that has to do with this topic. Romans chapter 8 verse 27 in the New Living Translation. The Father who knows our hearts knows what the Spirit is saying. For the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will. You know, that scripture is one that I could use to do an entire podcast on because it just simply tells us so much about how the Father and the Holy Spirit work together for us to live in God's will and how the Holy Spirit wants to guide us as we move into the future. He knows what's out there and He wants to help and lead us so that we may the right decisions, we make the right choices, we take the right, the correct actions, and we know we'll do that if we're being led by the Spirit of God. The Father, it says, knows.

25 our hearts, all the hearts of everyone, he says, and he knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us. The Holy Spirit is for us, to the Father, in harmony with God's will. So when we're being led by the Spirit of God, this is just so important. When we're being led by the Spirit of God, we know that we are doing the divine will of God. And that's why, which we'll cover in future podcasts on this, about the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit and many of the power gifts like tongues, interpretation of tongues and prophecy and those things. When we pray in the Spirit of God, we're praying according to the will of God. That's a gift that we can receive, and I'll cover that in upcoming podcasts on this series. And I've covered it in past podcasts dealing with the Holy Spirit. But we've got to understand that the Holy Spirit works with us.

13 He's on our side. He's our advocate. He's the one that represents us. He's the one that pleads for us. He's the one that defends us. He's the one that helps us. He's the one that leads us in making the right decisions and the right choices. So we've got to submit to him and yield to him. And when we do that, when we do that, we will be in the divine will of God in our life. And there's nothing more important after you become followers of Jesus Christ than is to operate in the divine will of Almighty God. You know, as I mentioned earlier in the podcast, and I'm getting ready to close this podcast up, the Holy Spirit draws us to Jesus, right? The only way we can become a follower of Jesus Christ is if the Holy Spirit draws us, and then by faith we receive him only because of God's grace that all that takes place. The Holy Spirit and our faith in Jesus work together. You hear that?

01 Holy Spirit and our faith in Jesus Christ, they work together. And when they work together, we live a great life, we live an abundant life, we live an overcoming life, we live a life filled, quite frankly, with the joy of the Lord and we can handle all the challenges that we face. That's how Paul was able to write these amazing scriptures that he wrote while being in prison and being nearly beat to death and starved to death. He still had such an anointing on his life that he was able to rise above all those circumstances and he didn't allow what he was going through to him of what he was going to, what he was going to receive from the Lord. Jesus said in John chapter 14 verse 6 in the New International Version, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. He gave us instructions. He was led by the Holy Spirit to say those words. John was led by the Holy Spirit to hear those words. I'm being led by the Holy Spirit to repeat those words and you're being led by the Holy Spirit to receive those words to know. that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. The only way to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior is to be touched by the Holy Spirit, to be drawn into the power of the Holy Spirit, to lead us, and to receive the faith that we need to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Now, in future podcasts, we will see how the Holy Spirit brings abundance to our life. We're going to see how the Holy Spirit blesses our finances. We're going to look into how the Holy Spirit brings strength into our life. From this podcast, we've learned a

32 lot. We've learned that the Holy Spirit guides and directs us that we couldn't become a Christian without the Holy Spirit. We've learned how the Holy Spirit helps to increase our faith by lifting us up and comforting us and making us feel comfortable in the fact that we can continue to pray and continue to believe and continue to continue to trust God for the answers that we need in our prayers. We've learned that it is possible to be... be Spirit -filled and be led of the Holy Spirit. And we also know that it is impossible to be born into the Kingdom of God and become a follower of Jesus Christ without the leading and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We've learned that why our faith and the Holy Spirit are inseparable, we need them together, and we've learned that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter. He's ready, willing, and able to meet every need, every challenge that we face on earth. Well, I hope this has been a blessing to you. There's so much more that I can say, but I'll be saying these things in upcoming podcasts because I really believe as we go through this I'm discovering that the Lord has a number of areas that we can address and a number of ways that we can discuss what it is to experience the Holy Spirit in our life.

37 So my next podcast coming up is entitled Walk in the Spirit. We're going to talk about how it is possible to walk in the Holy Spirit while we still live in an ungodly environment or an ungodly world. We'll discover how the power in us is greater than the sin that is in the world. And we will look at the scriptures that lead us into walking in the Spirit. And we'll understand how to hear the leading of the Holy Spirit and a whole lot more. There's a lot of things we can cover, but these are things that the Lord has put above my heart to discuss in the next podcast, the upcoming podcast. So I hope that you'll let your friends and family and neighbors know that we're continuing this series. I'm seeing a lot of interest in this series indeed. number of downloads that are coming in, and I just thank God for that. So with that, I'm just going to close in prayer. Heavenly Father. I thank you for this podcast. I thank you for those who've tuned in to listen to it. They're tuning in because they want to know more about the Holy Spirit.

33 They want to understand it. Some probably have a great understanding, Lord, but for those who are listening in, whether they have great knowledge or teaching and understanding or whether they have very little, I know the Holy Spirit can teach all of us something new today. And so I pray that those who are listening in, whatever they receive today, they'll put it to practice in their life. If they learn how to wait upon the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit, then that's a great success, if they learn how to trust God's Word for the answers, if they learn how to understand that they're seeking truth, that the Holy Spirit will lead them to truth, and that the Holy Spirit will help them in their weaknesses and their challenges, I pray blessing upon them. I thank you for this time and I'll be careful to give you praise for the great results we're going to hear. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
