0:01 Welcome to the Quality Christian Living Podcast. I am your host, David Friend. Today we're going into a brand new series entitled, The Holy Spirit. And during this series, we will learn how the Holy Spirit works in the lives of Christians. We will understand how vital it is and how truly important it is to be led by the Holy Spirit. And also that our study will help us better understand the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And we're gonna see how the Holy Spirit is available to help us. always be there to help us and guide us and direct us. So with that, let's get into it, but first we need to pray. Heavenly Father, I thank you once again for who you are. I thank you for the opportunity we have to bring this podcast at this time. And I pray now that the Holy Spirit would come in and guide and direct and anoint this podcast. Because without the anointing, it will have no value, no impact.

0:51 But with the anointing and with the power of God, we can see lives changed. And I pray for those who are listening in who maybe don't understand the clarity or have clarity on the gifts of the Spirit, on the Holy Spirit, that these podcasts will help them and bring new revelation into their hearts and minds. And for those who are aware of the gifts operate in the gifts, I pray that they would be able to listen and receive, maybe get something that the Spirit would help them as they endeavor to operate in the gifts of the Spirit. So I thank you once again for what's about to take place. I'll be careful to give you all praise and glory for it. In Jesus' name I pray, amen. In the middle of my last series dealing with living with purpose, which was well received by people. I found something very powerful and that was that one of the podcasts was entitled The Holy Spirit Brings Our Purpose or Reveals Our Purpose. And that particular podcast all of a sudden had just an explosion of people listening in and questions and thoughts came up. So I really felt touched by the Holy Spirit that I should consider doing a new series, a brand new series on the Holy Spirit. So that's what really impacted me to move into this particular topic for a while.

1:57 I'm not sure how long we'll be into this. We'll be along, I believe, as long as the Holy Spirit wants us, we'll go on and on and on, because there's so much to learn and so much we can receive as we study the powerful moving of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. This series will be based totally on what God's Word has to tell us about the Holy Spirit. Jesus spoke about it frequently. Paul spoke about it. It's just a... powerful part of living a Christian life, a quality Christian life. Now, I've not set up a list of topics, I really haven't, or an outline even to follow so that we'll know where we go in the next 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 podcasts, however long the Holy Spirit takes us. My desire is to submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit of God to direct our podcasts. There's an old song entitled, Come Holy Spirit, I Need You. Matter of fact, it's one of my favorites. I was saved many years ago.

2:50 and that song came out and it was just so powerful and even to this day when I hear it when I'm with people who we get together and maybe some people we pray and maybe someone wants to lead a little bit of singing and worshipping the Lord that old song comes up and it's just so inspiring and really that tells us so much come Holy Spirit I need you now that will be the theme of this series of podcasts without the leading of the Holy Spirit this series will lack value and it'll lack purpose and it will not hit the mark. But with the Holy Spirit, we can experience the power of God. Now I realize that some of those who are listening may have a great understanding of the workings of Holy Spirit. You may have been filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues and your heavenly language.

3:36 You may have the gifts of the Spirit, of healings and faith and hospitality and all the things that you're aware of. Yet I'm aware, definitely there are people listening, I believe many. have decided today they want to listen to this. podcasts because they have questions on the topic and sometimes in the church you don't hear it taught much and other times you hear it in the church taught and sometimes it gets a little radical and quite frankly I think sometimes it gets away from what the Lord told us about how to operate in the gifts of the Spirit and not only that how the Apostle Paul taught but all of that we'll be covering in the many weeks that will come as we move through this series on the Holy Spirit. In the book of Joel in chapter 2 and verse 28 it says this I will pour out my Spirit upon all people." So, now God's Word is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So therefore, we've got to understand when that was... came forth in that scripture, God still is operating that way today.

4:30 Some people believe that the Holy Spirit has now lifted and the gifts of the Spirit are not operating any longer. Well, that just don't agree with that at all, because I know that the Word of God says that the Spirit of God will dwell among men, that the Holy Spirit is here to operate. And Jesus said when he left, he says, I'm leaving. I've got to be with the Father. But he says, I'm leaving you, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. He said, our Paraclete. He says, our counselor, the one who will guide us and direct us and give us us help. So the Holy Spirit is who we have to help us. Don't refer to the Holy Spirit as it. The Holy Spirit is a he. It's who he is that's so important. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead, the triune Godhead. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Three individual, individual spirits. but all one God. We worship one God, the Trinity, the Triune God. If you have a problem with that and are struggling with that, you might want to get some counseling and help on that because it might be difficult for you at times to relate to when I talk about the Spirit of God and the Holy Spirit. Now, with these words I've just given you, what you just heard in the book of Joel, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. With those words being spoken, how many want God to pour out his Spirit?

5:43 on you. I hope that all of you listening in are feeling that way today, that you want the power of God to pour out on you. You want the Spirit of God to move on you and help you to operate in the Spirit and operate in the gifts of the Spirit and operate with wisdom from on high, not just your wisdom and your intelligence. And that's fine. Our wisdom or our intelligence is fine, but it's minor inside of God's power and his strength and his might and his wisdom, his knowledge. In the book of Isaiah, The Lord tells us that his ways are greater than our ways. His thoughts are greater than our ways. Everything that he is is greater than we are. So therefore we've got to understand that we need help to learn how to operate and walk in the power of God and in the power of the Holy Spirit. So I'm just asking that the Heavenly Father will help us to get more of you. receive more of the Holy Spirit. We submit to the Holy Spirit. We ask the Holy Spirit to help us and to teach us and to lead us into a deeper relationship with Him and with God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.

6:43 My prayer in this podcast is that we will all receive a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit. If you're here for that, then may the Lord bless you and may you receive that as we go through these podcasts. Let me ask you a question. It may seem silly to some people, but I really think it's important. I'm going to ask you this. How many are truly excited about what the Holy Spirit has for you. I mean you can't wait to hear more from Him and be led by Him. And ask another question, how many of there are questioning as to whether you understand the Holy Spirit when He's speaking or not? Or you have questions about whether the Holy Spirit is telling you to do this or to do that or not to do this or not to do that and you're just not sure where you should go? All those things, if you'll stay with me on this, all those issues we will discuss in the upcoming weeks and maybe months and months of our teaching on the Holy Spirit. You know, this podcast is called Quality Christian Living and Quality Christian Living is designed to do one thing. It's to help Christians live a greater life. Now I said it's designed to do one thing, but it's designed to do two things, really. The second thing is to ask people to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I wouldn't be doing these podcasts if I didn't have the opportunity to pray with people and to ask them to pray this prayer, prayer of submission to God and receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That's the reason that I do this podcast, is to lead people to Jesus.

Live a quality Christian life, a life filled with the power of God, filled with abundant living. I'm not talking about money, money, money. I'm talking about abundant living. Yeah, it also has a little bit to do with finances and being blessed in that area, but abundant living is so much greater than just receiving financial abundance. I just... Hope that you understand that. It's so important, so powerful to live abundantly and Quality Christian Living, this podcast, is designed to help us live that kind of life. I receive from this every single time that I do a podcast. There's something the Lord teaches me or shows me or strengthens me or encourages me or lifts me up into some situation that I'm maybe having a little bit of a challenge with.

8:55 The Holy Spirit helps. So these podcasts, the Quality Christian Living podcasts, are designed to help Christians live a quality life. Jesus said, I've come to give you life and give it to you more. abundantly, and being led by the Holy Spirit is abundant living. It just doesn't get any better than that. So that's why we're getting into this series, Dealing with the Holy Spirit, and I hope that you're ready for that, and I pray that you'll maybe contact me. I suggest that you would contact your friends or your family members or those around you, those you work with, to join us as we seek a Spirit -led life. Now, let's stop right there. A Spirit -led life. You know, that is truly the goal of every Christian, every Father of Jesus Christ. It's a life filled with great expectations, with an anticipation of the Holy Spirit filling us with His power, His love, His comfort, His wisdom, and His guidance.

9:45 You see, the Bible speaks of being filled with the Holy Spirit. That is our goal, to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit. There's a great story in the Bible, and I'm not going to get into it right now. There's about a man, a man who is a servant. I'm not even going to give you his name. I'll be doing that in an upcoming podcast. And they looked at him and they saw him. They said he was filled with the Spirit, that this man was so anointed of God that he was filled with the Spirit of God and because of that they put him in a leadership position and being filled with the Holy Spirit led him in to face so many great challenges in life and I'll be dedicating probably at least one podcast to that as an example of what it means to be living a life filled with the Holy Spirit and being led by the Spirit of God. So let me give you some other things before we go much longer into this particular podcast.

10:30 I have several goals for this series, quite a few goals. So let me just give you a few of them. Here's three or four as the Spirit leads. Let's see how many we get into. But let me give you the first one here. How can we experience the power of the Holy Spirit? Now, some people you instantly know what I'm talking about and you know the scriptures and all that and yet others. are wondering about that, they might have heard something about that, and still others may have never heard anything about the power of the Holy Spirit. Well, in Galatians chapter 3 and verse 14, it tells us who we are. as believers and it tells us that we receive the promise of the Holy Spirit through faith. So through faith and our desire to seek God, we can receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We'll have at least one or two podcasts dealing with the power of the Holy Spirit and we'll talk about the specific gifts of the Holy Spirit, the miracle gifts, the gifts of healings and all the power gifts and the fruit of the Spirit, those things that we need to have in our life, love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self -control.

11:31 All of these topics we'll be getting into and I'm not just trying to make this whole podcast filled with teasers because it's really not. I'm giving you some ideas of how important it is to stay with me in this podcast and go through it with me to receive that spirit -led life that Christians need and if they don't feel that they need it then they're missing out on really an incredible relationship with God and an incredible relationship with Jesus and an incredible relationship with the Holy Spirit. Okay here's another topic or question that I want to bring up that will come up in this series. How can we live a Spirit -led life? Well, you know, there's a lot of pressure out there to keep us from being led by the Spirit. Some of the pressure is our own knowledge, our own wisdom, our own understanding. Well, that's okay, and that's good, and God helps with those things, but our understanding is nowhere near as great as the Holy Spirit's understanding.

12:19 And we get distracted with life. We get busy with life when we decide to do things on our own rather than stopping and asking the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us and direct us. How can we live a Spirit -led life? There's one scripture I'm going to give you right now I think that's really powerful and it shows the battle that we go through in our life to be led by the Spirit of God. It's found in Galatians chapter 5 verses 16 and 17. But I say walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify. the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the spirit and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh. See, there's a battle going on. There is a massive battle going on, a spiritual battle taking place over our mind. It's amazing to think how many people struggle with issues that are stuck in their mind. They just can't seem to get them out because they try to do it on their own and we just can't do these things on our own. It's not by might or by power, the Bible where God says, but it's by my spirit, says the Lord. So we've got to understand in that it's the powerful life we want to live, the overcoming life that we want to live, the abundant life that we want to live, that life filled with joy and peace and happiness and not that we're not going to have trials, not that we're going to have difficult times. I mean, you're listening to a guy who's been told three times that he's had incurable diseases. Two of them were cancers, one was kidney failure in my life, and those things have rocked my world.

13:39 They really hit me hard, but as soon as I heard the diagnosis on a couple of those, I looked at the doctor and I said, so you're telling me this is incurable, right? And he says, yeah, there's no way that I can get cured from it. He says, no, no, we can try to help you. I said, so you're trying to tell me and trying to scare me with heaven? And then the doctor looked at me when he said that. Now see, I didn't say that in my own strength. That was Spirit -led. There's no doubt in my mind because my flesh was saying, oh, they said cancer. Oh, they said incurable. Oh, they said there's no treatment. Oh, they said there's no hope. Oh, they said this is going to be difficult for you and on and on and on they went. But the Holy Spirit quickened me to respond to the doctor in the midst of that terrible challenge that I had. And so it wasn't me, it was the Holy Spirit who said, tell him you're trying to scare me with heaven. And the doctor looked at me and he said, wow, you must really believe that. He said, I've never heard that before. And I said, well, you should have. Christians who are diagnosed with that should realize that heaven is the greatest thing that will happen ever to us. Spend eternity with Christ and our loved ones. And so therefore, we either operate in the flesh or we operate in the spirit. And that's what Galatians chapter 5 verse 16, 17 is basically saying. It says, but I walk, I tell you, I tell you, he says, I say walk by the spirit and you'll not gratify the desires of the flesh.

14:49 The desires of the flesh say they're just carnal. They're all about us. They're selfish, they're self -centered, and we don't want those things. It says, for the desires of the flesh are against the spirit, and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh. That sums it up right there, is how we can live a spirit -led life. We need to learn how to walk by the spirit and be led of the spirit. Here's item number three, maybe one of the goals that we have. How can we receive the gifts of the spirit? Now I'm sure some of you, as soon as you saw the topic on the Holy Spirit, or you were searching for the topic on the Holy Spirit through my podcast or other podcasts or just trying to fishing for it. And that's what led you to this particular podcast on the Holy Spirit, because you're wondering about how can I receive, how can we receive the gifts of the Spirit? Well, first of all, we need to read God's promises about the Holy Spirit. Throughout the Word of God, there's wonderful examples in the Old and New Testament about the power of the Holy Spirit. I already gave you one in the book of Joel. And let me give you another one now in the book of Acts, chapter 1 and verse 5, where Jesus said these words. baptized with water but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit so those are the types of scriptures you need to find now if you don't have a concordance that's something that many Bibles have at the end of the Bible and you can look up words look up the Holy Spirit it'll give you numerous scriptures throughout the Word of God that talk about the Holy Spirit and if you don't have that just simply get on your phone and and Google it they say and you can find scriptures on the Holy Spirit find a particular translation that you like I particularly enjoy the new Living

16:20 Translation. I also like the Message Bible somewhat. I was raised on the... new version of the King James, the new King James version I should say, I was raised as a Christian on that and then other translations came out. Now there's hundreds and hundreds of translations but find a translation that speaks to you and ask for what that translation has to say about the Holy Spirit and get those scriptures in your mind. I would strongly recommend though you check with your pastor or a Christian friend as to which translations you should listen to and read. I strongly recommend New Living Translation today. It's my absolute favorite and it's one I believe that really ministers to a lot of people. So how can we receive the gifts of the Spirit? We get it through the Word of God and look for the promises that Jesus gave us in the Word of God. So in addition to that, we can receive the gifts of the Spirit if you'll stay with me in this series. We will help you through God's Word and we'll be praying about it and we'll be believing that God is going to fill people with the Holy Spirit and that thousands, tens of thousands of people will receive the power of the Holy Spirit in their life. Here's the last question I want to bring one of the goals for this particular podcast. How can I share with others the importance of listening to the still, quiet voice of the Holy Spirit?

17:33 Well, some people say, I don't understand that still, quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. I've heard it, but where does it come from? Well, various translations refer to that in 1 Kings 19 and verse 11. It refers to, in other translations, they call the Holy Spirit voice a gentle whisper or a soft whisper or a low whisper, but it's a still quiet voice. Let me give you an example of what I like to explain what a still quiet voice is. Have you ever been, you know, sitting down somewhere where it's quiet or driving somewhere or just going for a walk and all of a sudden a thought comes into your mind like, call my mom or dad or call my friend or I've got this thing I need to do, whatever. I believe the Holy Spirit still quiet voice speaks to us like that.

18:15 It's that thought that comes into your mind, something that's there. And if it's a bad thought, obviously it's not the Holy Spirit. But if it's a good thought or a positive thought, let me give an example. When I started a church in North Scottsdale many years ago, I was sitting there on a Saturday. It was kind of a tradition for me to go in on Saturdays and then I would pray and I'd ask the Holy Spirit to help me to call people, maybe people that I don't know, that I should talk to, maybe just call them and invite them to church or remind them that we're going to be speaking on a certain topic and those types of things. I know it's probably old -fashioned these days to do that but it was really something that the Lord had me do and I would pray and sometimes I'd make 10, 15, 20 phone calls on a Saturday morning just to communicate with people in our church. And as the church grew and got bigger and bigger and bigger, you know, it became more and more difficult to try and to do that.

19:02 And so I remember one particular Sunday was coming up and I was there on Saturday morning and I was praying. We had a little prayer meeting there, people talking about the service and all that. Then everybody left and I was by myself in the church. And I'm in my office and I'm starting to get onto my message and thinking about what I should, you know, what I'm speaking on and looking up scriptures and just doing my preparation. And all of a sudden this still quiet voice said, call this particular family. And I thought, well, you know, they're new to the church and I don't really know them that well. And I wonder if I have their phone number. And I thought, no, I can't do that. I'm like, well, I'm busy. I'm putting this message together and I need to focus there. So yeah, I'll get to that later. And so all of a sudden I tried to get back into what I was doing in the Holy Spirit. It was speaking to me that still quiet voice saying call these people right now And I thought well, you know that that's okay and I thought well So I tried to find their phone number and I found it and I looked at and then my flesh was battling like the scripture I told you earlier Remember when I when I gave that one scripture to you that was so powerful in Galatians chapter 5 verse 16 But I say walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh for the desires of the flesh Are against the spirit and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh that was happening that scripture. I wasn't reading it I didn't even think about that scripture, but that's what was taking place. And that happens to all of us. We've all had this happen to us.

20:18 Well, I'm sitting there and I'm really busy. I want to get things moving for the sermon the next day. That's the number one thing on my heart and on my mind. And yet the still quiet voice was saying, call this couple. So finally, all of a sudden, I just stopped. And I said, OK. And I didn't say, OK, Lord. I didn't say, OK, Holy Spirit. I just said, OK, I'll call. And so I got the phone, picked it up, called the guy, and he answered. And he said, hi, this is Gary. And then he started, I said, well, this is Pastor Friend of the church. And he started to laugh instantly. And I thought, well, this is nice. The Holy Spirit or something is telling me to call. And I call this guy and he hears my voice and he starts laughing. And all of a sudden I'm thinking, this is, this is. Difficult I wish I hadn't called and then all of a sudden this guy's laughing I said, I'm sorry, but did I get it interrupt something there's something funny and he said he said pastor Nope, forgive me. Forgive me. He says you won't believe what just happened He said, you know We've only been coming to the church for a couple weeks and we the church that we were in was only about 40 or 50 people and this church is now running about a thousand people and he says and my daughter and I were talking about what church we should go to and our my wife and I we're all discussing where we should go because we were used to a small church didn't want to be a part of it anything really big. And all of a sudden, my daughter looked at me and says, well, Dad, you can't go to that church because you used to talk to the pastor all the time and the pastor of this church it's so big he's so busy he'll never have time to talk to you he said soon as she said that he'll never have time to talk to you the phone rang he says I picked up the phone and it said hello Gary this is pastor Dave over at the church

21:49 he says and that's why I started laughing because I had to stop I need to explain this to my family what's taking place you see that's the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit I can remember there was a Another time I was sitting in my office studying and working on some things, but I wasn't preparing a sermon, but I was doing something and working on a project in the church and I was extremely busy. It seems like when I get the busiest, busiest, busiest, it's when the Holy Spirit says, stop and give me your attention. And quite frankly, I really like that. I like when the Holy Spirit now calls upon me and says, whatever you're doing, stop. It's not important. And you need to do this. And I was sitting there in the office and all of a sudden another member of the congregation came to my mind. And it was in the middle of the week. And I thought, well, I should probably call them. And I thought, well, I'll get to it later. And the Holy Spirit, that still quiet voice said, call them right now.

22:34 So I thought, well, I'd had that other experience a few weeks before that, so I called them right then. And when I called, the man answered the phone. He said, hello. And I said, hi, this is Pastor David over at the church. I just wanted to see how you guys are doing. And he said, did my wife tell you to call me? And I said, no. I said, I just really felt like I should just call you and just see how you're doing. He said, well, I'm just now. getting ready to walk out the door and leave my wife. We just had a horrible fight. We've been arguing. I think we're going to have a divorce. And he said, so I'm heading out. I'm going to get a motel somewhere. I don't want to be part of her anymore. She doesn't want me to be around. She wants me to leave, get out of the house. And we're having this horrible fight. Our kids are watching. It's just absolutely terrible. He says, and just before I leave, he said, my phone rings. And I answered, it's you.

23:18 And I said, yeah, I believe the Holy Spirit asked me to call you. I said, I really believe that. And I said, instead of you leaving, could the two of you come down to the church right now and we could meet? And he said, no, no, that'll never happen. I said, well, why don't you ask your wife? Why don't we just see if we'll have favor and if I can get you down here? And so I heard him say, honey, Pastor Dave just called. He says, and you're sure you didn't call him? She said, no, I did not call him. And anyway, and she didn't. And he said, he wants us to come down to the church said well maybe that's what God wants and the two of them got in their car and their kids were older were teenagers and so they left their kids at home and they came down to the church and we had a couple of hours where we talked and visited and they started to get healed and their marriage got restored and healed and you know those are the kind of things that I'm talking about when I'm talking about a spirit -led life and please forgive the personal experience, but I can only give you the experiences that I've had that I know that the Holy Spirit intervened. And I'll be doing that a lot through this series because that's what's happened in my life. It's not to boast and say I've got it all together or that I always walk in the Spirit and I never have any fleshly thoughts or anything. No, I'm human just like you are. But bottom line, it's important that we need to understand that the Holy Spirit wants to lead us. He wants to guide us. And if we listen to that still, quiet voice, then we will be led of the Holy Spirit. So the last question was, can I share with others the importance of listening to the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit.

24:40 I would encourage you to read that scripture first. Kings chapter 9 and look what it says about the Holy Spirit's voice is a gentle whisper and a soft whisper and a low whisper and when you get that thought in your mind you can share that with other people that I had this thought and something happened in my life and something I needed to talk about to my husband or talk to my wife or talk to my boss or to my kids or whatever it might be or talk to a neighbor or invite someone to church listen for that still quiet voice the still quiet voice will be that voice that's bringing some hope and comfort and something positive into our lives. So listen to the still quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. Now, these are just a few of the topics we're gonna cover in this podcast series. This has been podcast number 316 so obviously we've been doing this for quite a while. This is a little over three years that the Lord has blessed us with this podcast and I just pray that you would invite your friends and family and let them know about this series. The last time I did a series on the Holy Spirit was probably about a year and a half ago. It was specifically on the Holy Spirit. We had a huge increase in the number of people who started listening in who were basically new to the teachings on the Holy Spirit. So I'm sure that same thing's gonna happen now. So I would encourage you to invite those that may have questions as we go through this. In addition to that, I'd like to just close with a little blessing for everyone who's listening in.
