·         Read the Strang Report: Spirit-Filled Psychologist: Church Must Be Healed From Sexual Brokenness to be Moral Force Again

Stephen Strang: There is sexual brokenness everywhere in our culture. You don't have to pay a whole lot of attention to the media to know that really anything goes on TV. Of course, on the Internet, it's even worse. Attitudes about sexuality and couples living together or even things such as same-sex marriage, which would have been unthinkable a generation or two ago have become law of the land. Hello, everyone. I'm Stephen Strang and welcome to the Strang Report. Today, I'm talking to an expert on sexual brokenness. His name is Dr. Doug Weiss. He is a clinical psychologist from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has helped many people and couples recover from sexual brokenness. He's a spirit-filled Christian, prolific author, and I've had the privilege of being his friend for a number of years. I recently was with him in Minneapolis, Minnesota and we sat down and talked about this issue of sexual brokenness. He has a very interesting theory that I really believe that the body of Christ needs to get hold of. He articulates it very well, but let me tee it up here by just saying that he believes that there is so much sexual brokenness in the church that the church really needs to be healed in order to be a moral compass for our culture. Contrast this to what many in the church do, and that is to sort of flail against what is going on in the culture. For example, flailing against same-sex marriage and so forth. Of course, there are some things that we've kind of given up on, like complaining about what's on the Internet. I was involved here in Florida in 2006 trying to get a constitutional amendment passed that would have defined marriage as between one man and one woman. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. In fact, I believe that Christians need to be more involved. But Doug reminds us that winning at the ballot box is really not the issue. The church has lost its ability to be a moral compass because of sin in the church. So, listen to my interview with Dr. Doug Weiss giving us some thoughts and some advice that really we need to take to heart.

Dr. Weiss, it's well known that our country is becoming less and less godly, especially as it comes to sexuality with everything from pornography to scandals in the church, same-sex marriage being approved. There lot of Christians who kind of flail against this and want to somehow change the laws or do different things or speak out against what they consider to be wrong. But you have a very interesting insight from your experience of counseling and dealing with sexual brokenness. And actually, your life purpose is to try to heal the body of Christ, heal them sexually. Could you elaborate a little bit on that?

Dr. Doug Weiss: I think that we want cultural change. But really, the church is the change. See, we've been doing this on a micro level for 30 years. Man has fallen the sexual sin because he's walked away from God, and he's made bad choices. Then he returns back to God and he starts protecting his wife, protecting his family, go in the ministry he's called to do in his local church or wherever. So, we also see this on a macro level, where the church is responsible to be the light bearer, the salt in the earth. The church is responsible to help keep culture salty, like it was in the fifties. You know, you do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. Even the secular world knew biblical principles because the church was the church. There was a right, there was a wrong. And what's happened is the church has been corrupted by morality. When more than half of the men in church are struggling with sexual sin addiction, pornography … in Revelation 2, it says to him who overcomes I will give authority over the nations. But the reverse of the verse is true. For those who are corrupted, they lose spiritual authority and power in a culture. We've seen that in Europe, we seen it in other parts of the world throughout church history. When the church becomes immoral, the culture no longer has that protection. no longer has the internal inoculation that the church presents. And so what happens is, if you really want to change culture, you heal the church. And once you heal the church, we have revival, we have the math, we have the people who can vote. Then you can actually change laws and move things. But when the culture is just reflecting the sickness in the church because of our own irresponsibility, they have more numbers. When they can make laws, they can actually legislate perversity. So, I believe that if we heal the church sexually, she regains her spiritual authority in the planet and the culture she's in, and the math shows up at the ballots. We elect people who want godly principles and we make laws that protect us. It's taken the darker side of our culture, probably about 35 years, to strip away what the church had up until about the 1950s or 1960s. And that moral decay is in the church, the culture reflects that. But the reverse is also true. If we heal the church and she becomes strong morally again, then that infiltrates culture.

Stephen Strang: In some ways that song was a radical concept because it's either Christians don't talk about it, or pretend that it doesn't exist, or they flail against it and sound judgmental and self-righteous. So how do we heal the church sexually? You described the statistics, what are some of the steps?

Dr. Doug Weiss: I've done several talks on the sexually healthy church. I think we have to have a positive message about sexuality inside of marriage and teach couples how to have healthy sexuality. Then we have the youth, and giving them the good news of sexuality and wanting them to protect their sexuality. Then we have to have a sexual healing ministry to those who've been sexually abused, to those who are in sexual addiction, to those are in porn addiction, and have a message of, hey, a lot of people been hurt this way, let's get together and heal. There are all kinds of support groups they can get into. There are materials they can get into. And really, if the church will just take responsibility for the sexual brokenness in our culture and the culture has to come to church to receive the medicine, all by itself, just setting up the hospital, it gives God a weapon in any city to bring people to Christ and to heal. Sexually broken people want to heal. But oftentimes, there's no hospital for them. So, let's set it up so that we can win. I think that's what churches can do. You don't need a PhD to do that. Most people leading sexual ministries are just people who want to see people well, with some kind of material that can be helpful. We've written many of those materials. They start support groups. It's four guys, then it's 10 guys, then it’s 25 guys and 100 guys. Over the course of years, we have some groups that are 20 years old, they literally have healed hundreds and hundreds of men in their city. So, that's how we can do it.

Stephen Strang: And undoubtedly, there are people listening and people who will read the newsletter who know of individuals who need help and our conversation has sparked them and they think, well, maybe there's help. So, tell me and my listeners how people can get help, how they can contact you how they can contact your ministry.

Dr. Doug Weiss: We have telephone counseling. So, if someone wants that, they can come to Colorado and do intensives. The phone number is 719-278-3708. The website is drdougweiss.com. There's an app, Dr. Doug's tips. There's lots of resources there if you want to start with materials. If you just reach out will direct you and help you to where you can go and take the next step so that you can either be part of the healing process for yourself individually or your marriage, or part of the healing message for the Church of Jesus Christ in your area. You can be that person who sends healing to other people's lives. We'd love to talk with you and find out what your vision is for your part in this battle.

Spirit-Filled Psychologist Offers Keys to Heal Church From Sexual Brokenness
