Introduction

Stephen Strang: Have you ever had storms in your life where it looked like everything was going wrong, and then things turned out right? Or maybe there was a Friday, like Good Friday, and Sunday was coming? Today on the Strang Report, I'm going to talk to someone who had one of the most incredible examples of this happen in his life that I've ever heard, and I wanted to interview him. His name is Leif Hetland. He and I have been friends for a long time and I have come to really respect him at many different levels, but especially the boldness that he has to spread the gospel in parts of the world that seemingly are very closed.

Hello everyone, this is Stephen Strang and welcome to this edition of the Strang Report. My guest, Leif Hetland, has had amazing open doors in Pakistan, which is a Muslim country with a lot of violence. Recently, he spent about six months preparing for a huge crusade. I'll call it that, maybe he calls it something else. But the rains came. I'll ask him to explain this. Then there was all kinds of tension and it looked like everything had gone wrong. So, Leif, why don't you tell the story instead of me about what was happening in Pakistan, and how did it go so wrong? And how did the Lord turn that around for you?

Leif Hetland: It started actually about six months before. I just felt this urgency from the Holy Spirit. I saw this region and area where there's about a million and a half people, and none of them have ever heard about Jesus … at least not that Jesus is alive. So, I just started to say, OK, let's take the gospel … if for 2,000 years, there's never been any one that has brought the love of Jesus to those people. But as soon as I did this, I had an attack with my ear. It got clogged up. Then I started getting ringing tinnitus and I started with this vertigo. I knew it. As soon as I said yes to this idea, it seems like these storms, almost like Goliath was there and was just mocking me. It was a six-months period of time, like it was one thing after another that seemed to go wrong. Finally, when I'm about to travel, I get a text from Qatar Airways and says, all flights have been cancelled. I remember it was right when two suicide bombers bombed themselves in India.  India retaliated and 300 people were killed in Pakistan, Pakistan took down two of the airplanes. So, it was right in the middle of that. That's what I was supposed to fly in. Everything was cancelled, and I thought that I'm supposed to have this assignment. I have this clear call to go and take this gospel. So again, I was trying to figure out how to get into the country, even as my daughter with tears in her eyes, was just saying that I want you to walk me down the aisle one day and. When she told me that, I just wept the whole night at the airport in Atlanta. This led to me eventually getting a flight to Qatar. I had to change my ticket and buy a separate ticket because there were no tickets going in. I just wanted a vacation package to go to Qatar.

Then when I landed in Qatar, the next 36 hours, was just such a tension of war because how do I get into Pakistan? You couldn't even fly over Pakistan. As I stood at the airport, there was one flight opening up Islamabad, the capital city. I'm exhausted, but when I finally was able to get one seat on the flight, all of my team has been cancelled, security had been cancelled. Now, when I landed there, this storm came in. It was strange because it's not even rainy season. But this storm continued to follow us and for the next 10 hours, it just hammered down until eventually I got to a place called (inaudible) and a little hotel there. It was smelly, damp and wet. I'm pretty much exhausted and about ready to give up when I got the news that they had to cancel the whole event. The storm that followed after me continue for another two hours into the area where we had the stadium and just flooded the whole area. I just broke down into hotel room. I was totally by myself. at the mosque right outside, prayer was going on and I'm stuck and the temperature dropped. It was one of those moments that I didn't even know if I can get out of there. I mean, I literally had to break down. Then eventually I remember I had a scripture verse before I left and that was the disciples, they were in this room where they were stuck after the crucifixion and they were all hiding and it was closed down. The scripture verse just came to me and Jesus just came. He didn't have to knock on the door because He is the door and He just filled that room. I remember in that hotel room and I just cried out for Jesus and I just started to pray. And eventually the presence of Jesus just came in to that room. Then he said, Leif, thank you. Thank you for joining Me, and thank you for not giving up. And I just wept. I sat in that room and it was almost like you've been thrown off a horse, you need to get back on it again.

There was going to be a wedding the next day with one of the most influential Muslim leaders. So, from that point I was like, I need to make this. We drove and it was still rainy and stormy. By the time I got Lahore and the wedding, suddenly around us you could see over the car, a circle. So, when we went into the wedding area, with a lot of officials, the rain stopped and it was like a circle around us, like an open heaven over the wedding area.

Stephen Strang: Let's talk about this a little bit. This is so interesting.  want to go back to that hotel room where you had had a great deal of difficulty traveling, you traveled for hours and hours, you had to get into Pakistan, the weather was so bad. You get in this old, smelly hotel room. It looked like all the doors were closed. You've traveled much more than I have, but I've been to many different countries and I remember being in China in the 1990s, in the Soviet Union before the fall of communism and they were not a fraction as dangerous as what you just described. But I can remember feeling apprehension and Lord, why am I here. Most of my listeners are never going to be in Pakistan, they're never going to have these circumstances. But all of us are going to have times of despair of where it just looks like our whole world is crumbling. So, I think that people could identify this. And of course, you've got a very, very happy ending to this, which I want to get into. But just talk to me a little bit about that moment where you felt that Jesus was there with you.

Leif Hetland: I think at first it was the fatigue, and then from fatigue it was the fear and the fear of you felt like you had failed and then you felt forsaken, totally isolated. That's kind of the feeling I had when I remembered I had a scripture verse. Sometimes it's important that we have some memory stones with us because I couldn't see, I couldn't hear. Then I remembered somebody gave me the verses; John chapter 20 verses 19 to 23 before I left. That word was just that Jesus just filled that room for the disciples, because they were stuck in a room full of fear, thinking the same that happened to Jesus is gonna happen to them. When I remembered that story, the same Jesus that just filled that room with the disciples … I just started to turn my affections to Him, because the giant, the Goliath in that room was so big it was crushing me. In a moment, I just turned my affections towards Jesus. I said Jesus, I just need you to come. Jesus and fill my room, fill my heart in the same way as you did the disciples that day. It took a while; I don't even know how long because I was in such a state of mind because I hadn't slept for 78 hours, but it had been at least three weeks with very little sleep before. That's when suddenly the presence of Jesus just came in to that room. It’s amazing that you can be in the darkest place, like in a cave, but when you have His presence, you suddenly have everything. Everything just changed. The perspective changed. I'm still exhausted; circumstances has not changed. But I'm not alone there. There are two people there and one is more real than I am, and that's Jesus and His very presence. So, when the Holy Spirit just started fill me, I had peace in the middle of it. That was the second thing, from His presence I had peace, and then provision. Jesus just shows his hands and says I'm here, I'm here with you. So, whatever you're going through right now, I am with you. When I just know that Jesus is here, we can handle this. Something just shifted. The atmosphere shifted in my heart, knowing that I have peace in the middle of the storm. I think that was connected when I went back again to Lahore afterwards, in the middle of the storm. I had peace in the middle of my storm. So, there was no storm on the inside so I could speak to the storm that was on the outside. And that's what happened when we came to the wedding. You have seen a video of that when we were coming into his wedding area. It's just incredible. These people are like Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar. They say God is great. And they said, Dr. Leif, when you came in could you see all the rain? So, they saw it. It became a sign for them to knowing who I am. The ambassador of love, when he came, the rain stopped over the wedding and they watched it. There was rain around, but not in the tent area where we had the wedding. And that started this amazing favor that came as a result of it.

Stephen Strang: I want to give my listeners a special offer of getting two years of Charisma magazine for only $20. This is better than two for one. I hope you want Charisma in your home where you can read it, where you can share where you can keep it around the house and sometimes look at an article later. With everything that's happening with digital, we have found that people still want Charisma in print. I've been sharing this in my last few podcasts. And it's interesting that the subscriptions are coming in. I hope that you'll take advantage of this offer by going to charismamag.com/two. That means two years for the price of one for only $20.
