The Weight of Grace: Understanding Curses in Capernaum

Capernaum serves as a powerful backdrop for our discussion on the theology of curses and the implications of familiarity with the divine. In this episode, we explore how Jesus, embodying grace and truth, pronounced a severe judgment on a city that had maximum exposure to his miracles yet failed to respond with repentance. This stark warning reminds us that judgment is proportional to revelation; Capernaum's sins were rooted not in ignorance, but in their willful resistance to the truth they had witnessed. We delve into the idea that a curse is the removal of divine covering due to persistent disobedience, highlighting the danger of normalizing the presence of God without genuine submission. By reflecting on Capernaum's story, we challenge ourselves to consider our own responses to the revelations of Jesus in our lives, emphasizing the need for active engagement and repentance rather than complacency.

I'm standing right now in Capernaum here in Israel.
Speaker AAnd what happened in this place forces us to confront something that most Christians are avoiding right now.
Speaker AIt's actually the theology of curses.
Speaker ABecause Jesus, think about this.
Speaker AThe embodiment of grace, mercy and truth literally stood in this city and pronounced one of the most severe judgments in the entire Gospels.
Speaker ANot on pagans, not on idol worshipers, but on a city that actually knew him.
Speaker ASo think about what I'm saying, okay?
Speaker ANow, here in Capernaum, I can't help but to acknowledge this, this heaviness.
Speaker ABecause Capernaum was not just a stop on Jesus ministry tour.
Speaker AMatthew, chapter 4, verse 13 says, Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea.
Speaker AThis was his home base.
Speaker AI mean, from right here.
Speaker AI mean, as a matter of fact, over my should, demons were cast out publicly.
Speaker AThe sick were healed openly.
Speaker AThe synagogue heard teaching with authority, not just theory.
Speaker AI mean, that's the synagogue right there.
Speaker AThis city had maximum exposure to the Son of God, which means what happens next is not emotional, it's judicial, it's governmental.
Speaker AThis is what I want you to understand.
Speaker AWe're going to go a little bit deeper right now.
Speaker ASo in Matthew, chapter 11, verse 23, Jesus says, and you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?
Speaker AYou will be brought down to Hades.
Speaker AThis is not metaphoric like metaphorical language in Jewish theology.
Speaker AThis is covenant lawsuit language.
Speaker AJesus is not throwing insults.
Speaker AHe's acting as a prophet and a judge.
Speaker AHe's invoking the same framework found In Deuteronomy, chapter 28, blessings for obedience and curses for refusal after revelation.
Speaker ASo now you're probably asking the question, what.
Speaker AWhat is a curse?
Speaker AActually, well, let.
Speaker ALet me clarify something, okay?
Speaker AA biblical curse, it's not magic.
Speaker AIt's not superstition, it's not emotional anger.
Speaker AA curse is the removal of divine covering after persistent willful resistance to the truth.
Speaker AAnd in other words, God does not actively destroy.
Speaker AHe actually steps back and removes his covering.
Speaker ARo Chapter one calls this God gave them over.
Speaker ACurses are not God attacking you.
Speaker AThey are God honoring your refusal and removing his covering.
Speaker ACapernaum didn't lack information.
Speaker AThey lacked repentance.
Speaker AOkay, this is what you need to understand.
Speaker AThey saw some of the most dramatic miracles and deliverances and had Jesus right here.
Speaker ABut he says something even more staggering.
Speaker AIf the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Speaker AThat means judgment is proportional to revelation.
Speaker ASodom sinned in ignorance.
Speaker ACapernaum Sinned in proximity of the Savior.
Speaker AAnd in Covenant theology, proximity raises accountability.
Speaker AI mean, the closer you are to the light, the more dangerous resistance becomes.
Speaker AI mean, think about it like that.
Speaker AAnd this is Jesus Christ himself.
Speaker AOkay, so this is New Testament.
Speaker ARight behind me are the ruins of the synagogue where Jesus likely taught.
Speaker AAnd it would have been the lower level of the architecture, but underneath this limestone structure in the foundation from his day, he would have talked.
Speaker AAnd this means that these stones heard his voice.
Speaker AThe city didn't reject him violently.
Speaker AThey simply normalized him and became familiar.
Speaker AAnd normalization is one of the most lethal spiritual states you can find yourself in, because the lack of honor, it literally is dangerous as you're interacting with God.
Speaker ACapernaum teaches us something that's pretty terrifying if you ask me.
Speaker AI mean, you can host the presence of God and still resist the purposes of God and not repent.
Speaker AYou can experience miracles without submission and without transformation.
Speaker AThat's crazy.
Speaker AJudgment doesn't always come from outright rebellion.
Speaker ASometimes it actually comes from delay to repent, delayed repentance, delayed obedience, delayed surrender.
Speaker AOkay?
Speaker AAnd that's what happened here.
Speaker AAnd Jesus himself curses Capernaum.
Speaker AJesus didn't curse ignorance.
Speaker AHe confronted familiarity without response.
Speaker ACapernaum wasn't destroyed because, well, you know, hey, we didn't know enough.
Speaker AWe didn't really.
Speaker ANo, no, they were judged because they knew too much and they did too little.
Speaker AAnd the ruins behind me, they're still preaching.
Speaker AThey're still preaching.
Speaker AGrace ignored becomes judgment.
Speaker ATruth delayed becomes testimony.
Speaker AAnd familiarity without obedience is not safety.
Speaker AIt's actually danger.
Speaker ADanger.
Speaker AI mean, I feel this in the pit of my stomach because we're all guilty of this as Christians.
Speaker AYou know, the question Capernaum asked every generation is very simple.
Speaker AWhat will you do with the Jesus you know so well?
Speaker ABecause blessing is not about proximity.
Speaker AIt's about response.
Speaker AEach and every one of us have to choose to make that response.
Speaker ALord, I'm going to respond to you.
Speaker AAnd I've seen this many, many, many times where we just get comfortable.
Speaker AWe get used to hosting the Holy Spirit.
Speaker AWe get used to seeing the miraculous.
Speaker AAnd no, Lord, take me back to my first love.
Speaker ATake me back to that place where I first knew you.
Speaker AI want to respond to you.
Speaker AAnd how dare we even ask for more?
Speaker AGod, We've already seen so much.
Speaker AYou know, I think there's something very hu about being here because there's something in my heart I don't know about you watching right now that says, I don't want to be like the Per the people of Capernaum.
Speaker AI don't.
Speaker AI don't want to be like them, that.
Speaker AThat see God, do amazing things and yet go right.
Speaker ABut the truth is, many of us are like that.
Speaker ASo what do we do?
Speaker AWell, before this video is over, we're going to do the thing that they didn't do here.
Speaker AWe're going to repent.
Speaker AAnd what does repent mean?
Speaker AI'm going to turn from my wicked ways.
Speaker AAnd you know why that's important?
Speaker ABecause all of us, if you're asked the question, do you want to receive a miracle from God?
Speaker AOh, yeah, of course.
Speaker ADo you want to receive breakthrough in your finances?
Speaker AYeah, of course.
Speaker ADo you want to stop sinning?
Speaker AWell, no, because I do this for comfort.
Speaker AI sin because it helps me.
Speaker ASee, the thing is, Jesus, in another instance, he actually heals 10 lepers with an incurable skin disease.
Speaker AAnd it says that only one of them came back to worship him.
Speaker AThat means nine others received a medically impossible miracle.
Speaker AAnd still it was not enough to serve him, to come back to him.
Speaker AAnd I think moments like this right now are important.
Speaker AAnd this should serve as a reminder, looking at the ruins of this city, that.
Speaker AThat we cannot be like that.
Speaker ASo let's just.
Speaker AWhether you're saying this for the first time or whether you're renewing it as if it's the first time, let's come back to him.
Speaker AFather, I thank you right now for many who are watching this.
Speaker AAnd you could even say this with me, Lord, I want you to be my first love.
Speaker ATake me back to that place.
Speaker AI submit, I surrender and I repent.
Speaker AAnd I thank you that you've broken the curse off of me by the blood of the Lamb.
Speaker AAnd, Father, that I can be free from the curse because you hung on a tree to free me from that.
Speaker AIn Jesus mighty name, Amen.
Speaker AAmen.
