What does it take to finish well in ministry without losing your integrity, compromising your calling, or becoming consumed by success?
In Part Two of this special conversation on The Strang Report, Stephen Strang continues his interview with longtime pastor and Christian leader Alex Clattenberg about some of the greatest dangers facing pastors and ministry leaders today.
After more than 50 years of ministry, Alex has watched churches grow, leaders succeed, ministries transition and gifted pastors fall. In this conversation, he addresses one of the most dangerous issues that can accompany ministry success: pride.
Steve asks whether success or failure is more dangerous for a pastor. Alex explains why some leaders can experience tremendous growth and remain focused on Jesus, while others allow pride to slowly change them. His prescription is straightforward: stay in Scripture, stay in prayer and keep giving God the glory.
The conversation then turns toward struggling churches and the Great Commission. Alex argues that churches can become isolated from the very people they are called to reach, creating vibrant services for Christians while losing their heart for people outside the church.
Steve also asks a deeply personal question: What should a pastor do when everything looks fine publicly, but he knows there is compromise privately?
Alex's answer is direct. Deal with it quickly. Repent. Get around people who genuinely love Jesus. Remain teachable. He warns that major failures often begin with seemingly small compromises.
Alex then shares the story of Church in the Son, from being forced out of its original meeting space to eventually experiencing significant growth. He discusses what genuine revival looks like and why he believes prayer, relationships and Christians actively sharing Jesus are essential.
The conversation also explores one of the most difficult moments in any pastor's ministry: knowing when to hand the church to the next generation.
Alex explains why he turned Church in the Son over to Jonathan and Jackie D'Angelo, what he looked for in a successor, and why character, integrity and faithfulness matter more than charisma.
Then Steve asks the question at the heart of Part Two:
What does it mean to finish well?
Alex's response may surprise you. He isn't thinking about finishing.
Instead, he says he is asking God for bigger vision, greater ministry and another season of usefulness. For Alex, getting older doesn't mean abandoning the field.
Finally, Alex addresses younger pastors navigating ministry in the social-media age. He warns against trying to jump ahead by building a platform, gaining acceptance and accumulating followers.
His priority is much simpler: follow Jesus.
