What does a pastor learn after more than 50 years in ministry, watching revivals come and go, churches rise and fall, and gifted Christian leaders fail?
In Part One of this special episode of The Strang Report, Stephen Strang sits down with longtime pastor and ministry leader Alex Clattenberg for a deeply personal conversation about the Jesus Movement, revival, pastoral leadership, integrity, compromise, prayer, and what it takes to remain faithful in ministry.
Alex Clattenberg witnessed the Jesus Movement firsthand. What began with roughly 20 young people at the Rock House grew as young people from the counterculture began showing up hungry for something real. Alex recalls traveling the country to learn from what God was doing elsewhere, then bringing those lessons back to Central Florida.
He also tells the remarkable story of helping organize a massive Jesus Festival on 172 acres near Walt Disney World. Thousands traveled from across the country, and approximately 12,000 people ultimately gathered for what Alex describes as an incredible Jesus meeting.
That story intersects directly with Stephen Strang's own history. Steve recalls helping promote the festival while Charisma was just beginning and explains how the Rock House's publication helped inspire the idea that eventually became Charisma magazine. Alex shares what he saw in a young Stephen Strang that made him believe his calling was worth supporting.
But the conversation eventually turns from history to a sobering question facing the Church today:
Why do pastors fail?
After decades of mentoring Christian leaders, Alex discusses the importance of keeping Jesus preeminent, refusing to compromise your integrity, developing a genuine personal prayer life, and guarding against the temptations that have destroyed gifted ministers.
He also addresses something many church members never see: the criticism, loneliness, pressure and discouragement pastors can carry privately.
And when Steve asks why ministers who never intended to fail eventually fall morally, Alex gives a direct answer about wisdom, temptation and deliberately refusing to put yourself in compromising situations.
