Gifts God Would Love, episode 125
As you wrap up your Christmas shopping and wrapping, perhaps you would want to think of some gifts for Jesus. After all, it is His birthday we are celebrating.
I like to consider what Jesus might like from me as a birthday gift. I’ve thought of several things—I know He would appreciate these gifts from you as well.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,700
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal.
2
00:00:08,700 --> 00:00:13,700
And also help and hope for your own life journey.
3
00:00:13,700 --> 00:00:18,700
So how are you doing with the holidays? Surviving so far?
4
00:00:18,700 --> 00:00:23,200
If you love a prodigal, I know it can be challenging.
5
00:00:23,200 --> 00:00:32,200
I find, personally, giving gifts at Christmas, birthdays, or anytime often lifts my spirits.
6
00:00:32,200 --> 00:00:38,200
And so I work hard at trying to find just the right gifts.
7
00:00:38,200 --> 00:00:46,200
Speaking of birthdays, we're almost there. The day we celebrate the birthday of our Savior.
8
00:00:46,200 --> 00:00:53,200
I like to consider, therefore, what Jesus might like for me as a birthday gift.
9
00:00:53,200 --> 00:01:00,200
And I've thought of several things. As I mentioned, each desirable gift our Lord might like,
10
00:01:00,200 --> 00:01:03,200
take note of something you might want to give him.
11
00:01:03,200 --> 00:01:09,200
You can do all of them, but for sure, just, you know, which one really stands out that maybe
12
00:01:09,200 --> 00:01:15,200
this is what Jesus would love to receive from you as a birthday gift.
13
00:01:15,200 --> 00:01:22,200
First, my heart. This is the most important one.
14
00:01:22,200 --> 00:01:26,200
And if I had only one gift to give, this would be it.
15
00:01:26,200 --> 00:01:36,200
He says his greatest desire is that we would love him with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength.
16
00:01:36,200 --> 00:01:43,200
And that is, with our whole being, with everything that we are, he desires our heart to be his,
17
00:01:43,200 --> 00:01:52,200
that we would love him. He desires to be first in our affections, that is, king of our hearts.
18
00:01:52,200 --> 00:02:00,200
And as I grow to love him like that, then I am ready to give him these other additional gifts.
19
00:02:00,200 --> 00:02:05,200
But they will often flow out of, I've given my heart to the Lord.
20
00:02:05,200 --> 00:02:10,200
The next gift for Jesus is my will.
21
00:02:10,200 --> 00:02:16,200
Actually, this one's pretty hard for me, even still, because growing up,
22
00:02:16,200 --> 00:02:20,200
my greatest desire was always to have my own way.
23
00:02:20,200 --> 00:02:27,200
And my family would agree with that, and that I actually usually got my own way.
24
00:02:27,200 --> 00:02:33,200
But meeting God, I said, I think I choose your way.
25
00:02:33,200 --> 00:02:42,200
And throughout my walk with him, we've had many conversations about my way or his way.
26
00:02:42,200 --> 00:02:52,200
I sometimes lobby for my good ideas, but he has convinced me that his way is always better than my way.
27
00:02:52,200 --> 00:03:00,200
There have been some difficult, very difficult times to give him my will, to choose his way over mine.
28
00:03:00,200 --> 00:03:06,200
When I was planning to go work on a magazine, I had to choose God's way,
29
00:03:06,200 --> 00:03:09,200
which was to work with the ministry I'm a part of.
30
00:03:09,200 --> 00:03:13,200
And then he let me work on a magazine, so he was so kind.
31
00:03:13,200 --> 00:03:18,200
And then another time where I had to choose his way over mine,
32
00:03:18,200 --> 00:03:23,200
I was dating this guy, Steve Douglass, for five years.
33
00:03:23,200 --> 00:03:27,200
And people said, give up on him, give up on him.
34
00:03:27,200 --> 00:03:32,200
And I said, OK, I'm done. And I said, Lord, I'm done. I can't wait any longer.
35
00:03:32,200 --> 00:03:37,200
And the Lord said, wait, don't give up. Don't quit.
36
00:03:37,200 --> 00:03:40,200
He was so worth waiting for.
37
00:03:40,200 --> 00:03:45,200
Without a doubt, it works best when I surrender willingly.
38
00:03:45,200 --> 00:03:51,200
So he asked for our will. He also asked for my hands.
39
00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:54,200
Now, that seems a little funny.
40
00:03:54,200 --> 00:03:57,200
I always say I don't do hands.
41
00:03:57,200 --> 00:04:03,200
That is, I don't make things or draw things or build things or fix things.
42
00:04:03,200 --> 00:04:07,200
I just do words, not hands.
43
00:04:07,200 --> 00:04:13,200
And so when God asked for my hands, it reminds me of his conversation with Moses
44
00:04:13,200 --> 00:04:16,200
when Moses said, I can't speak well.
45
00:04:16,200 --> 00:04:20,200
I can't go to Pharaoh and tell him what you want me to say.
46
00:04:20,200 --> 00:04:24,200
And God said, what's in your hand, Moses?
47
00:04:24,200 --> 00:04:28,200
And Moses looked and in his hand was his shepherd's staff.
48
00:04:28,200 --> 00:04:31,200
And God said, that's what we'll use.
49
00:04:31,200 --> 00:04:37,200
And sure enough, God did use that shepherd to bring down plagues on the Egyptians,
50
00:04:37,200 --> 00:04:42,200
to part the Red Sea, to provide water from a rock for the people.
51
00:04:42,200 --> 00:04:49,200
His response to me, give me your hands, the gifts that I have given you.
52
00:04:49,200 --> 00:04:54,200
I will amaze you with how I will use you.
53
00:04:54,200 --> 00:04:57,200
He also asked for my feet.
54
00:04:57,200 --> 00:05:00,200
Seriously, he wants my feet? He does.
55
00:05:00,200 --> 00:05:05,200
That is, he wants me to be willing to put my feet in motion,
56
00:05:05,200 --> 00:05:08,200
to go wherever he asks me to go.
57
00:05:08,200 --> 00:05:14,200
That might be to a physical place or an opportunity like doing a podcast.
58
00:05:14,200 --> 00:05:23,200
It might be someplace scary or uncomfortable or to get engaged in a challenging relationship.
59
00:05:23,200 --> 00:05:30,200
He says, I know you don't know where I'm going to send you, but I know this.
60
00:05:30,200 --> 00:05:35,200
I know that he has promised to go with me.
61
00:05:35,200 --> 00:05:41,200
The first words he said to me almost after my husband moved to heaven last year,
62
00:05:41,200 --> 00:05:44,200
and I said, how am I going to live without him?
63
00:05:44,200 --> 00:05:48,200
And the Lord said, I will be with you.
64
00:05:48,200 --> 00:05:50,200
And he has been.
65
00:05:50,200 --> 00:05:59,200
And so whether it's our prodigal or going someplace scary or just circumstances that happen,
66
00:05:59,200 --> 00:06:07,200
he says, whatever it is, wherever you go, where I'm taking you, I am with you.
67
00:06:07,200 --> 00:06:10,200
So he wants our feet.
68
00:06:10,200 --> 00:06:13,200
Now those gifts are fairly tangible to understand.
69
00:06:13,200 --> 00:06:21,200
Our heart and our hands and our feet and our will.
70
00:06:21,200 --> 00:06:24,200
Those are the things that he asks for us.
71
00:06:24,200 --> 00:06:30,200
But then there are some other things that he would really love to see us giving him.
72
00:06:30,200 --> 00:06:36,200
These are gifts that have to do with how we relate to him.
73
00:06:36,200 --> 00:06:43,200
It's more about relationship than just knowing him and letting him work.
74
00:06:43,200 --> 00:06:46,200
And the first one is trusting.
75
00:06:46,200 --> 00:06:49,200
He asks us to trust him.
76
00:06:49,200 --> 00:06:56,200
Jesus talked often of the power of faith, of believing who he is and what he is like.
77
00:06:56,200 --> 00:06:59,200
He tells us to have faith.
78
00:06:59,200 --> 00:07:04,200
He asks the disciples, even as he still asks us, where is your faith?
79
00:07:04,200 --> 00:07:11,200
He says nothing is impossible to those who have faith, who will trust him.
80
00:07:11,200 --> 00:07:20,200
Author Brennan Manning, in his wonderful book Ruthless Trust, describes trust as faith in action.
81
00:07:20,200 --> 00:07:31,200
When I put feet to my faith, my belief in Jesus, I entrust myself, my life, my needs, my fears,
82
00:07:31,200 --> 00:07:36,200
my hopes and dreams, even my prodigal to him.
83
00:07:36,200 --> 00:07:41,200
Trusting him is saying, I believe that you're God and you're good.
84
00:07:41,200 --> 00:07:45,200
We're going to talk about that next week.
85
00:07:45,200 --> 00:07:50,200
So trusting is a gift he would love us to have all the time.
86
00:07:50,200 --> 00:07:54,200
Another one is obeying.
87
00:07:54,200 --> 00:08:00,200
In our relationships, we often look for proof of love from others in their actions.
88
00:08:00,200 --> 00:08:03,200
If you love me, you will.
89
00:08:03,200 --> 00:08:07,200
And sometimes we don't say that, but it's kind of how we are thinking a lot of times.
90
00:08:07,200 --> 00:08:09,200
If you love me, you wouldn't do that.
91
00:08:09,200 --> 00:08:13,200
But if you love me, you will do this.
92
00:08:13,200 --> 00:08:18,200
And Jesus also looks for action that demonstrates that our love is true.
93
00:08:18,200 --> 00:08:27,200
He says in John 14, if you love me, you will obey my teaching.
94
00:08:27,200 --> 00:08:37,200
That's not always easy, but he says his teachings provide the how-tos for life and health and joy
95
00:08:37,200 --> 00:08:44,200
and meaning and our obedience to what he's teaching, what he's asking of us.
96
00:08:44,200 --> 00:08:49,200
That obedience says to God, I love you, I trust you.
97
00:08:49,200 --> 00:08:56,200
And it brings him great joy as well as amazing benefits to us.
98
00:08:56,200 --> 00:09:01,200
And then he asks us to be loving.
99
00:09:01,200 --> 00:09:07,200
The greatest commandment we are to obey is to love God with your whole being
100
00:09:07,200 --> 00:09:12,200
and to love others as you love yourself.
101
00:09:12,200 --> 00:09:17,200
When our greatest love belongs to Jesus, he is pleased,
102
00:09:17,200 --> 00:09:23,200
but he desires that our love for him lead to love for others.
103
00:09:23,200 --> 00:09:28,200
A new command I give you, love one another.
104
00:09:28,200 --> 00:09:31,200
Love as I have loved you.
105
00:09:31,200 --> 00:09:35,200
Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's almost impossible.
106
00:09:35,200 --> 00:09:38,200
Love like Jesus? How did Jesus show us love?
107
00:09:38,200 --> 00:09:42,200
Oh yeah, he laid down his life. He went to the cross.
108
00:09:42,200 --> 00:09:49,200
But he asks us to love others like he has loved us,
109
00:09:49,200 --> 00:09:55,200
to be there for them, to care about them, to be there when they need someone,
110
00:09:55,200 --> 00:09:59,200
to serve them, to give, to whatever is needed.
111
00:09:59,200 --> 00:10:04,200
And he promises to go with us.
112
00:10:04,200 --> 00:10:11,200
The primary way that we lay down our lives in love is by giving time or help
113
00:10:11,200 --> 00:10:14,200
or money or encouragement.
114
00:10:14,200 --> 00:10:23,200
Jesus really likes this gift, and we often receive back more than we give.
115
00:10:23,200 --> 00:10:26,200
And then thanking. Thanking.
116
00:10:26,200 --> 00:10:29,200
Scripture is pretty clear about this gift.
117
00:10:29,200 --> 00:10:35,200
In everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
118
00:10:35,200 --> 00:10:38,200
You've heard me say this before, I know.
119
00:10:38,200 --> 00:10:43,200
Say thank you in everything? That makes no sense.
120
00:10:43,200 --> 00:10:51,200
How do you say thank you for tragedies, betrayals, losses, disappointments,
121
00:10:51,200 --> 00:10:56,200
a lost prodigal, even the smallest pains of life?
122
00:10:56,200 --> 00:11:05,200
Because God is God and God is good, saying thank you is one more way we express trust in God.
123
00:11:05,200 --> 00:11:12,200
That he cares about us and will work even terrible things for our good.
124
00:11:12,200 --> 00:11:16,200
Another gift that gives back.
125
00:11:16,200 --> 00:11:24,200
God loves as we give, as we surrender, as we say yes, as we give these gifts to him,
126
00:11:24,200 --> 00:11:26,200
they all give back to us.
127
00:11:26,200 --> 00:11:30,200
And so it's kind of a selfish thing that we get to do.
128
00:11:30,200 --> 00:11:34,200
We get to give, but God's going to give to us in return.
129
00:11:34,200 --> 00:11:39,200
And of course the best gift, the one that makes all the others possible,
130
00:11:39,200 --> 00:11:46,200
finishes the song, What Can I Give Him? Give him my heart.
131
00:11:46,200 --> 00:11:50,200
So don't wait till Christmas, which I know is soon.
132
00:11:50,200 --> 00:11:58,200
Wrap these gifts up right now and offer them to your Father in heaven.
133
00:11:58,200 --> 00:12:01,200
I have a sweet Christmas gift for you.
134
00:12:01,200 --> 00:12:05,200
A new playlist I call Music for the Hard Times.
135
00:12:05,200 --> 00:12:11,200
I think it will be helpful through any hard times that you're experiencing,
136
00:12:11,200 --> 00:12:14,200
with your prodigal or otherwise.
137
00:12:14,200 --> 00:12:19,200
And it will encourage you and lift you up, I believe.
138
00:12:19,200 --> 00:12:22,200
And you can find it in the show notes.
139
00:12:22,200 --> 00:12:27,200
Just click on it and you can listen to some amazing songs
140
00:12:27,200 --> 00:12:31,200
that will be just what you want in these hard times.
141
00:12:31,200 --> 00:12:36,200
So let me summarize. It's Christmas, it's the birthday of Jesus,
142
00:12:36,200 --> 00:12:40,200
and we get to celebrate him by giving him the gifts
143
00:12:40,200 --> 00:12:43,200
that will be most meaningful to him.
144
00:12:43,200 --> 00:12:48,200
Our hearts, our will, one of the hardest.
145
00:12:48,200 --> 00:12:57,200
Our feet, our hands, just trusting him, believing, trusting him.
146
00:12:57,200 --> 00:12:59,200
What a gift that is.
147
00:12:59,200 --> 00:13:02,200
Obeying, that's the next thing that happens.
148
00:13:02,200 --> 00:13:09,200
Loving him and others and learning to thank in all things.
149
00:13:09,200 --> 00:13:15,200
So I pray that this Christmas will be so beautiful for you,
150
00:13:15,200 --> 00:13:21,200
that there will be new connections with your prodigal,
151
00:13:21,200 --> 00:13:27,200
new ways to show love, new lays that you see this person
152
00:13:27,200 --> 00:13:32,200
responding to the Lord, and that your relationship with God
153
00:13:32,200 --> 00:13:37,200
will develop and grow and deepen during this Christmas time,
154
00:13:37,200 --> 00:13:43,200
especially as you offer him the gifts that will please him so much.
155
00:13:43,200 --> 00:13:58,200
Thank you, God bless you.
