Giving Thanks Opens Hearts, Minds and Doors (episode 40)

Giving Thanks Opens Hearts, Minds and Doors (episode 40)
  • Our prodigal’s grandfather was dying. Papa was the most important man in Josh’s life. When he became ill and was growing weaker and weaker, we were fearful that Josh would be so devastated when Papa passed that he might take his own life.

    Instead, Josh planned the funeral. He said he wanted to become a good man like his grandfather—to make him proud. And he thanked God for him.

    Giving thanks has been one of the most transforming practices I have learned in my life. And our long prodigal wilderness was a significant teacher.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,440
Today, on the When You Love a Prodigal podcast, you will receive gifts that come to you as

2
00:00:09,440 --> 00:00:12,360
you learn to give thanks.

3
00:00:12,360 --> 00:00:15,960
Gifts for you are coming today.

4
00:00:15,960 --> 00:00:22,760
If you love a prodigal, which you likely might if you're listening to this podcast, you can

5
00:00:22,760 --> 00:00:30,160
discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal,

6
00:00:30,160 --> 00:00:37,560
and also help and hope on your life journey as well.

7
00:00:37,560 --> 00:00:43,400
As you listen today, and I'm so glad that you're here, I'm going to encourage you to

8
00:00:43,400 --> 00:00:49,640
ask God to show you which of the gifts that I'm going to mention are the ones that you

9
00:00:49,640 --> 00:00:55,960
need, maybe just one, and you can say, yes, I want that gift.

10
00:00:55,960 --> 00:01:01,400
Write about it, write it down, and then write to me and tell me what gift you felt God had

11
00:01:01,400 --> 00:01:08,640
for you and even how that's going and how he's used it in your life.

12
00:01:08,640 --> 00:01:13,520
Our prodigal's grandfather was dying.

13
00:01:13,520 --> 00:01:19,360
Our son is adopted, and this is his birth grandfather.

14
00:01:19,360 --> 00:01:23,080
Noah was the most important man in Josh's life.

15
00:01:23,080 --> 00:01:28,040
He was the one who was there in his early years before we adopted him.

16
00:01:28,040 --> 00:01:32,660
He taught him to fish, to handle a boat, to love the ocean.

17
00:01:32,660 --> 00:01:36,220
He took him to karate and to baseball.

18
00:01:36,220 --> 00:01:39,160
He just did everything with him.

19
00:01:39,160 --> 00:01:45,040
But then when the county had taken him from his mother and was looking for a home for

20
00:01:45,040 --> 00:01:50,400
him, the grandparents said, we're already raising his half-sister.

21
00:01:50,400 --> 00:01:54,220
We just are too old and too tired to take him.

22
00:01:54,220 --> 00:01:59,960
And so he ended up with us.

23
00:01:59,960 --> 00:02:02,400
But Papa never left his life.

24
00:02:02,400 --> 00:02:08,640
He was always there, very involved with him in the years that followed.

25
00:02:08,640 --> 00:02:16,160
And then Josh had a lot of ups and downs, hard times, bad times, and better times.

26
00:02:16,160 --> 00:02:23,840
And he was in a better place in his life when Papa became quite ill and was growing weaker

27
00:02:23,840 --> 00:02:25,800
and weaker.

28
00:02:25,800 --> 00:02:29,080
Josh took off from his job to be with him.

29
00:02:29,080 --> 00:02:31,040
He wept and wept.

30
00:02:31,040 --> 00:02:37,480
He took long walks on the beach, pouring out his pain and his anger to God.

31
00:02:37,480 --> 00:02:44,160
He told me, I know I need to give thanks even in this, but I'm having a hard time saying

32
00:02:44,160 --> 00:02:46,920
thank you to God.

33
00:02:46,920 --> 00:02:52,400
Giving thanks had been an emphasis in our family, and he'd finally begun to make it

34
00:02:52,400 --> 00:02:54,200
his.

35
00:02:54,200 --> 00:03:00,400
But Josh was so devastated at his grandfather's decline.

36
00:03:00,400 --> 00:03:08,200
And then we were sure that he was so out of control over it that when Papa died, that

37
00:03:08,200 --> 00:03:12,200
there was a good chance Josh would take his own life.

38
00:03:12,200 --> 00:03:16,020
But when it happened, this is what Josh did.

39
00:03:16,020 --> 00:03:25,600
He helped the man from the funeral home, Carrie, get his grandfather out to the van where they

40
00:03:25,600 --> 00:03:28,600
would take him to prepare him.

41
00:03:28,600 --> 00:03:33,720
Then he cleaned up all the area where his grandfather had been for weeks.

42
00:03:33,720 --> 00:03:37,800
And he planned the funeral with his grandmother.

43
00:03:37,800 --> 00:03:42,680
At the funeral, he got up and he shared what his papa had meant to him.

44
00:03:42,680 --> 00:03:46,880
He said he wanted to become a good man like his grandfather.

45
00:03:46,880 --> 00:03:48,880
He wanted to make him proud.

46
00:03:48,880 --> 00:03:52,920
And he thanked God at the memorial service.

47
00:03:52,920 --> 00:03:58,360
And then again at our Thanksgiving dinner a few weeks later, he thanked God for what

48
00:03:58,360 --> 00:04:02,440
a wonderful grandfather he had had.

49
00:04:02,440 --> 00:04:07,680
And even though I missed him, it never entered his mind that he was going to take his life,

50
00:04:07,680 --> 00:04:12,280
having lost the most important person in his life.

51
00:04:12,280 --> 00:04:19,160
Giving thanks has been one of the most transforming practices I have learned in my life.

52
00:04:19,160 --> 00:04:25,800
And in our long, prodigal wilderness, it was a significant teacher to me.

53
00:04:25,800 --> 00:04:29,120
I learned about giving thanks.

54
00:04:29,120 --> 00:04:36,720
And now it's almost Thanksgiving, at least in our country, in the U.S.

55
00:04:36,720 --> 00:04:44,680
For many of us, Thanksgiving is a hard time, especially in the past couple of years.

56
00:04:44,680 --> 00:04:50,320
We might not have lost a loved one, but most of us know someone who has.

57
00:04:50,320 --> 00:04:57,400
There are always family tensions, hurtful memories, loneliness, all of that when you

58
00:04:57,400 --> 00:05:02,480
come together, especially as you have more adults or young adults.

59
00:05:02,480 --> 00:05:08,900
It can be a really challenging time to enjoy your holidays together.

60
00:05:08,900 --> 00:05:15,960
But having a prodigal in the family or in the home can be especially difficult.

61
00:05:15,960 --> 00:05:22,080
All this can make it really hard, almost impossible, to be thankful.

62
00:05:22,080 --> 00:05:28,000
And so you do Thanksgiving, and you're not thankful.

63
00:05:28,000 --> 00:05:31,400
But it is exactly what we need to do.

64
00:05:31,400 --> 00:05:33,360
We need to give thanks.

65
00:05:33,360 --> 00:05:40,520
Again, one of the most important, helpful, life-changing truths that I have learned.

66
00:05:40,520 --> 00:05:43,160
God is so clear in Scripture.

67
00:05:43,160 --> 00:05:51,840
Two verses I can mention, though there are others, says in Philippians 4, we are to pray

68
00:05:51,840 --> 00:05:55,960
about everything with thanksgiving.

69
00:05:55,960 --> 00:06:02,000
I think usually when we pray about everything in our lives, we're just praying what we wish

70
00:06:02,000 --> 00:06:03,720
God would do.

71
00:06:03,720 --> 00:06:07,780
And He's saying we need to do it with thanksgiving.

72
00:06:07,780 --> 00:06:12,600
And then this is Paul speaking again in 1 Thessalonians 5.

73
00:06:12,600 --> 00:06:17,440
He says, in all things, give thanks.

74
00:06:17,440 --> 00:06:19,720
Why would God say that?

75
00:06:19,720 --> 00:06:20,720
Everything?

76
00:06:20,720 --> 00:06:22,720
All things?

77
00:06:22,720 --> 00:06:25,440
How is that possible?

78
00:06:25,440 --> 00:06:31,480
He says it because He knows that giving thanks is the fastest way to bring needed change

79
00:06:31,480 --> 00:06:32,980
to us.

80
00:06:32,980 --> 00:06:39,400
The growth that we need, the attitudes that need to be better, all of that.

81
00:06:39,400 --> 00:06:42,200
Giving thanks is the key.

82
00:06:42,200 --> 00:06:47,520
So let me tell you about these gifts that giving thanks will give to you.

83
00:06:47,520 --> 00:06:55,200
First, when we say thank you, Lord, almost immediately our focus changes.

84
00:06:55,200 --> 00:07:01,880
Instead of centering on the pain caused by my unwelcome circumstances, especially by

85
00:07:01,880 --> 00:07:09,080
a prodigal who's making some bad decisions, instead of focusing on that, I center on God.

86
00:07:09,080 --> 00:07:11,360
I focus on Him.

87
00:07:11,360 --> 00:07:17,600
I invite Him to give me His perspective on this difficult time.

88
00:07:17,600 --> 00:07:21,120
Sometimes it's barely perceptible, but it's there.

89
00:07:21,120 --> 00:07:25,800
There is a small shift from fear to faith.

90
00:07:25,800 --> 00:07:31,640
That just happens almost immediately for me if in a hard time I say thank you, Lord, He

91
00:07:31,640 --> 00:07:35,080
just changes my perspective.

92
00:07:35,080 --> 00:07:36,080
But He goes further.

93
00:07:36,080 --> 00:07:37,880
There's more.

94
00:07:37,880 --> 00:07:43,120
Another thing that happens when we say thank you, Lord, it's as though we are saying to

95
00:07:43,120 --> 00:07:49,280
Him, I believe you are God and I believe you are good.

96
00:07:49,280 --> 00:07:55,120
It doesn't feel like it right now, but Your Word assures me it is true.

97
00:07:55,120 --> 00:08:01,320
I have known it to be true in the past and I choose to believe it now.

98
00:08:01,320 --> 00:08:08,260
The scriptures help us to recall and again believe that God is good.

99
00:08:08,260 --> 00:08:16,000
In Jeremiah 32 we get this amazing promise, I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

100
00:08:16,000 --> 00:08:21,580
I will never stop doing good to them.

101
00:08:21,580 --> 00:08:23,080
Did you hear that?

102
00:08:23,080 --> 00:08:27,600
God said, I will never stop doing good to them.

103
00:08:27,600 --> 00:08:34,680
Bless to you and me, to our prodigal, to the other family members we'll be with.

104
00:08:34,680 --> 00:08:40,320
I will inspire them to fear me so that they will never turn away from me.

105
00:08:40,320 --> 00:08:48,320
I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all

106
00:08:48,320 --> 00:08:50,280
my heart and soul.

107
00:08:50,280 --> 00:08:57,120
I just love the passion that God has for us and what He wants to do in our lives and how

108
00:08:57,120 --> 00:08:59,840
good He is.

109
00:08:59,840 --> 00:09:04,440
Psalm 34 we read, taste and see that the Lord is good.

110
00:09:04,440 --> 00:09:08,480
Blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.

111
00:09:08,480 --> 00:09:16,840
And then in Psalm 86, you Lord are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call

112
00:09:16,840 --> 00:09:18,560
to you.

113
00:09:18,560 --> 00:09:26,880
And then in Psalm 100, for the Lord is good and His love endures forever.

114
00:09:26,880 --> 00:09:31,520
His faithfulness continues through all generations.

115
00:09:31,520 --> 00:09:39,720
And so when I can say thank you, I'm recognizing that God is good and I can trust Him therefore

116
00:09:39,720 --> 00:09:44,000
in what He's doing in my life or the lives of those I love.

117
00:09:44,000 --> 00:09:47,920
It's a huge thing that changes your perspective.

118
00:09:47,920 --> 00:09:52,920
We seem terrible, but God is good and He loves us.

119
00:09:52,920 --> 00:09:55,920
And He can do something about this.

120
00:09:55,920 --> 00:10:00,160
Even in the painful time, He's working.

121
00:10:00,160 --> 00:10:07,080
When we say thank you, Lord, we are also expressing our trust in God and His trustworthiness,

122
00:10:07,080 --> 00:10:09,460
even in tough times.

123
00:10:09,460 --> 00:10:16,160
That step of faith and obedience in the midst of my fear and pain does a couple of wonderful

124
00:10:16,160 --> 00:10:17,500
things.

125
00:10:17,500 --> 00:10:22,200
First of all, my mind and my emotions quiet.

126
00:10:22,200 --> 00:10:26,520
They settle, maybe even relax.

127
00:10:26,520 --> 00:10:34,860
And I began to experience peace in the midst of turmoil, hope when there seems to be none.

128
00:10:34,860 --> 00:10:41,520
So not only will I understand that God is good and loves me and therefore I can trust

129
00:10:41,520 --> 00:10:49,880
Him, saying thank you just brings peace to me and gives me hope for the future and what

130
00:10:49,880 --> 00:10:52,080
you're going to do.

131
00:10:52,080 --> 00:10:59,280
And in ways that I don't fully understand, saying thank you begins to open doors.

132
00:10:59,280 --> 00:11:08,200
It's as if those words said in my hesitant trust give God a key to us, a key to our hearts

133
00:11:08,200 --> 00:11:09,880
and our minds.

134
00:11:09,880 --> 00:11:19,440
And with that key, He begins to unlock doors that have been locked by our pain, our anger,

135
00:11:19,440 --> 00:11:22,160
our fear, our resistance.

136
00:11:22,160 --> 00:11:30,040
We begin to get glimpses of answers to our prayers, of more steps forward than backward,

137
00:11:30,040 --> 00:11:37,920
of new attitudes, and occasionally of outright transformation in the lives of our prodigals,

138
00:11:37,920 --> 00:11:45,000
those we love, others that we pray for, and most importantly, in our own lives.

139
00:11:45,000 --> 00:11:52,000
God says if you'll say thank you, I'll show you what that can open up for your life, in

140
00:11:52,000 --> 00:12:00,280
your attitudes, in your mental health and emotional health, and your peace and joy.

141
00:12:00,280 --> 00:12:04,200
Josh, our prodigal, really learned to say that.

142
00:12:04,200 --> 00:12:06,520
He learned to give thanks.

143
00:12:06,520 --> 00:12:09,840
And it's made a huge difference in my life as well.

144
00:12:09,840 --> 00:12:16,300
I consider it one of the two most important things in my walk with God is giving thanks.

145
00:12:16,300 --> 00:12:25,120
So my encouragement to you for this Thanksgiving season that we are entering is to do that.

146
00:12:25,120 --> 00:12:26,120
Give thanks.

147
00:12:26,120 --> 00:12:31,800
Oh, yes, at the table you might have a little piece of paper that everyone gets one and

148
00:12:31,800 --> 00:12:34,920
it gives a question, what are you thankful for?

149
00:12:34,920 --> 00:12:38,160
But I'm talking about more than that.

150
00:12:38,160 --> 00:12:39,880
How do we do that?

151
00:12:39,880 --> 00:12:48,160
Every day, name or write down at least one thing you are thankful for.

152
00:12:48,160 --> 00:12:49,760
Can't think of anything?

153
00:12:49,760 --> 00:12:54,740
Well, start with your own life and relationship with God.

154
00:12:54,740 --> 00:12:59,600
What are you thankful for in the past in your life?

155
00:12:59,600 --> 00:13:01,160
Still can't get there?

156
00:13:01,160 --> 00:13:04,760
Ask a friend or family member what they're thankful for.

157
00:13:04,760 --> 00:13:07,760
That might stimulate an idea for you.

158
00:13:07,760 --> 00:13:13,200
Look around your home or your neighborhood for something that brings you joy and for

159
00:13:13,200 --> 00:13:14,980
which you're thankful.

160
00:13:14,980 --> 00:13:22,000
If you can begin to identify things you're thankful for, then it can become more of a

161
00:13:22,000 --> 00:13:27,600
habit, a way of remembering to say thank you, Lord.

162
00:13:27,600 --> 00:13:32,540
Try adding one more specific thank you to a list each day.

163
00:13:32,540 --> 00:13:38,520
But if only one is all you can come up with, you know, God will receive that and he will

164
00:13:38,520 --> 00:13:44,400
still begin the work he's going to do in your life because you said thank you.

165
00:13:44,400 --> 00:13:50,800
Now, I hope that you've written down something that you think will help you be able to give

166
00:13:50,800 --> 00:13:58,060
thanks even when your prodigal makes another bad choice or when things don't go the way

167
00:13:58,060 --> 00:13:59,840
you want.

168
00:13:59,840 --> 00:14:04,760
Be sure to write and tell me about that because then I can pray for you.

169
00:14:04,760 --> 00:14:10,800
Maybe I can send you something that would be helpful and I'll have that to share with

170
00:14:10,800 --> 00:14:11,800
others.

171
00:14:11,800 --> 00:14:13,400
I won't identify you.

172
00:14:13,400 --> 00:14:17,560
Just the things that you have learned.

173
00:14:17,560 --> 00:14:21,120
Give thanks about everything.

174
00:14:21,120 --> 00:14:24,200
Pray about everything with thanksgiving.

175
00:14:24,200 --> 00:14:27,280
God says, I have gifts for you.

176
00:14:27,280 --> 00:14:28,940
Your life will change.

177
00:14:28,940 --> 00:14:35,580
You will like how you're able to live and who you are even better because you have learned

178
00:14:35,580 --> 00:14:37,080
to give thanks.

179
00:14:37,080 --> 00:14:41,540
It has immediate results, I promise.

180
00:14:41,540 --> 00:14:46,720
Even in the hard things, even as Josh struggled to say thank you when his grandfather was

181
00:14:46,720 --> 00:14:53,880
dying, but he got there and God gave him not only peace in the midst of it, but he gave

182
00:14:53,880 --> 00:14:57,740
him new resolve for his life.

183
00:14:57,740 --> 00:15:03,840
Giving thanks is one of the most important things we can do.

184
00:15:03,840 --> 00:15:09,800
Let me give you a word about the next two weeks on When You Love a Prodigal.

185
00:15:09,800 --> 00:15:14,260
This is the first of two episodes on giving thanks.

186
00:15:14,260 --> 00:15:22,040
Next week, we'll be talking about cultivating a grateful heart so it even becomes just welling

187
00:15:22,040 --> 00:15:24,240
up from inside you.

188
00:15:24,240 --> 00:15:30,200
It's not just learning to give thanks, but it's a heart that's grateful.

189
00:15:30,200 --> 00:15:32,440
I hope that will bless you.

190
00:15:32,440 --> 00:15:38,520
Then the following week, we have an interview that you're going to love.

191
00:15:38,520 --> 00:15:45,020
We will be talking about with Dina Yohe, who's the author of the book, You're Not Alone,

192
00:15:45,020 --> 00:15:50,560
her journey with her prodigal and what she's learned from it and the ministry God's given

193
00:15:50,560 --> 00:15:51,560
her.

194
00:15:51,560 --> 00:15:59,120
The prodigal, Renee, is the inspiration behind the group to write Love on Her Arms.

195
00:15:59,120 --> 00:16:06,040
She's had quite a journey, a lot of very hard things, and a lot of things she and her family

196
00:16:06,040 --> 00:16:10,920
have learned as a result of Renee's very difficult journey.

197
00:16:10,920 --> 00:16:16,760
You'll learn a lot about that in our interview in two weeks.

198
00:16:16,760 --> 00:16:22,720
Next week, Cultivating a Grateful Heart, the week after that, the title of that one is

199
00:16:22,720 --> 00:16:26,280
Can You Love the Holidays When You Love a Prodigal?

200
00:16:26,280 --> 00:16:28,880
I think you'll find out it's possible.

201
00:16:28,880 --> 00:16:47,880
God bless you.
