Hope 2: Facing Your Fears, episode 54 (rebroadcast)
When you love a prodigal, you live with fear.
One mom named some of the fears she had for her daughter. She could:
Be kidnapped and held against her will;
Be abducted and sold into sex trafficking;
Disappear and never be seen or heard from again;
Move away and sever ties with us forever;
Suffer irreversible brain damage from drug use;
Die from a drug overdose;
Die from alcohol poisoning;
Give up and commit suicide to end her suffering.
What do you do with your fears?

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,500
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal.
2
00:00:10,500 --> 00:00:15,500
And also help and hope for your own life journey.
3
00:00:15,500 --> 00:00:21,500
Today we are continuing a five-part series on hope.
4
00:00:21,500 --> 00:00:28,500
We all need hope. We cling to hope. We weep when hope is dashed.
5
00:00:28,500 --> 00:00:37,500
And oh, how we groan to overcome our fears because we lose hope.
6
00:00:37,500 --> 00:00:53,500
So I want you, as we talk about facing your fears, be listening and pay attention to what strikes you as something that will help you to face the fears you have regarding a prodigal loved one.
7
00:00:53,500 --> 00:00:57,500
But jot them down so you don't forget them.
8
00:00:57,500 --> 00:01:12,500
My friend Dina, in her book You Are Not Alone, Hope for Hurting Parents of Troubled Kids, relates the time when she knew she had to confront her worst fears for her prodigal.
9
00:01:12,500 --> 00:01:19,500
She wrote them down so she could see them, acknowledge them, and face them.
10
00:01:19,500 --> 00:01:24,500
And here are some of the desperate fears she recorded.
11
00:01:24,500 --> 00:01:41,500
I am afraid because Renee could be kidnapped and held against her will, be abducted and sold into sex trafficking, disappear and never be seen or heard from again,
12
00:01:41,500 --> 00:02:02,500
move away and sever ties with us forever, suffer irreversible brain damage from drug use, die from a drug overdose, die from alcohol poisoning, give up and commit suicide to end her suffering.
13
00:02:02,500 --> 00:02:07,500
When you love a prodigal, you live with fear.
14
00:02:07,500 --> 00:02:17,500
Some of us haven't come to such extreme fears as Dina listed, but I know you have your own list of the fears that grip your heart.
15
00:02:17,500 --> 00:02:21,500
Destroy your trust and steal your hope.
16
00:02:21,500 --> 00:02:25,500
How can we hold on to hope?
17
00:02:25,500 --> 00:02:44,500
Remember this verse from last week from our first episode on hope, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
18
00:02:44,500 --> 00:02:47,500
Overflow with hope?
19
00:02:47,500 --> 00:02:49,500
How is that possible?
20
00:02:49,500 --> 00:02:52,500
Fear overshadows our hope.
21
00:02:52,500 --> 00:02:56,500
What do we do with that fear?
22
00:02:56,500 --> 00:02:58,500
We can do what Dina did.
23
00:02:58,500 --> 00:03:01,500
We can name our fears.
24
00:03:01,500 --> 00:03:06,500
We can write them down or at least say them aloud what we are afraid of.
25
00:03:06,500 --> 00:03:09,500
We can be specific.
26
00:03:09,500 --> 00:03:10,500
Use Dina's list.
27
00:03:10,500 --> 00:03:18,500
Something terrible could happen to her or we might never see her again or she might die.
28
00:03:18,500 --> 00:03:29,500
Or whatever the fears that you are facing regarding your loved one, naming them helps to take away some of the power of fear.
29
00:03:29,500 --> 00:03:43,500
And as we name them, we allow ourselves to weep, to mourn, to lament the possible reality of those things we fear.
30
00:03:43,500 --> 00:03:58,500
I find it helpful after naming those fears to offer them to the Lord, lifting my hands up to do so or lay them on an altar or something I'm calling an altar.
31
00:03:58,500 --> 00:04:08,500
I usually just lift my hands up figuratively, holding my fears up to the Lord, giving them to him.
32
00:04:08,500 --> 00:04:18,500
A number of times as I have recognized that my desires for a safe and godly future for our son had become an idol,
33
00:04:18,500 --> 00:04:25,500
I wrote my fears on paper, then I burned the paper as an offering to the Lord.
34
00:04:25,500 --> 00:04:40,500
I have saved those ashes from the several times I have done that in a small alabaster urn to remind me to keep on giving my fears to God.
35
00:04:40,500 --> 00:04:42,500
It's right where I work.
36
00:04:42,500 --> 00:04:47,500
I can see it if I just look up from where I'm sitting.
37
00:04:47,500 --> 00:04:56,500
Another oh-so-helpful key for me to get free from fear is to say, thank you, Lord.
38
00:04:56,500 --> 00:05:01,500
Thank you for the things I'm afraid might happen to my beloved prodigal.
39
00:05:01,500 --> 00:05:12,500
Yes, even for those and for God's love and mercy and grace for me and for my wanderer.
40
00:05:12,500 --> 00:05:21,500
Thanking God is freeing. It opens the door for God to work in me and in my prodigal.
41
00:05:21,500 --> 00:05:32,500
Then we can remember that scripture contains several hundred admonitions to fear not or do not be afraid.
42
00:05:32,500 --> 00:05:36,500
Don't you like that? Do not be afraid.
43
00:05:36,500 --> 00:05:45,500
Let's look at some of those scriptures spoken by God to some of his servants who had plenty of reason to be afraid.
44
00:05:45,500 --> 00:05:54,500
To Abram or Abraham when he had no child and God says you're going to be the father of millions.
45
00:05:54,500 --> 00:06:00,500
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.
46
00:06:00,500 --> 00:06:08,500
Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.
47
00:06:08,500 --> 00:06:14,500
To Moses as he led the children of Israel in the desert, the Lord said to Moses,
48
00:06:14,500 --> 00:06:23,500
do not be afraid of him, Pharaoh or other leaders of nations, small nations.
49
00:06:23,500 --> 00:06:36,500
Do not be afraid, Moses, for I have delivered him, this one king, into your hands along with his whole army and his land.
50
00:06:36,500 --> 00:06:38,500
Do not be afraid.
51
00:06:38,500 --> 00:06:47,500
To Joshua as he became the leader to take the children of Israel into the promised land, have I not commanded you?
52
00:06:47,500 --> 00:06:52,500
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid.
53
00:06:52,500 --> 00:07:00,500
Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
54
00:07:00,500 --> 00:07:11,500
To Elijah when he had to tell King Ahaziah that he the king would die, the angel of the Lord said to Elijah,
55
00:07:11,500 --> 00:07:17,500
go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.
56
00:07:17,500 --> 00:07:24,500
So Elijah got up and went down with the servant of the king to the king.
57
00:07:24,500 --> 00:07:32,500
Then to the disciples when Jesus came walking on water in the storm and they were terrified,
58
00:07:32,500 --> 00:07:37,500
Jesus immediately said to them, take courage, it is I.
59
00:07:37,500 --> 00:07:40,500
Do not be afraid.
60
00:07:40,500 --> 00:07:46,500
And to the disciples when Jesus told them he would be leaving.
61
00:07:46,500 --> 00:07:51,500
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you.
62
00:07:51,500 --> 00:07:54,500
I do not give to you as the world gives.
63
00:07:54,500 --> 00:07:57,500
Do not let your hearts be troubled.
64
00:07:57,500 --> 00:08:01,500
And do not be afraid.
65
00:08:01,500 --> 00:08:09,500
Are our fears imaginary? No, they could come true in the life of a prodigal we love.
66
00:08:09,500 --> 00:08:13,500
Will those fears return? Possibly.
67
00:08:13,500 --> 00:08:17,500
Even probably. New circumstances can trigger them.
68
00:08:17,500 --> 00:08:25,500
Our enemy, the devil, will send arrows containing those fears right into our minds and even our hearts.
69
00:08:25,500 --> 00:08:29,500
We can grow weak and weary.
70
00:08:29,500 --> 00:08:36,500
Is hope real? Can it last? Will our hopes be fulfilled?
71
00:08:36,500 --> 00:08:43,500
Hope placed not in our circumstances nor in the restoration of our prodigals.
72
00:08:43,500 --> 00:08:50,500
But God himself is real. It will last. That hope will be fulfilled.
73
00:08:50,500 --> 00:08:59,500
Jeremiah the prophet lived in very hard times and had to deliver many hard messages
74
00:08:59,500 --> 00:09:04,500
which people didn't want to hear. And he had real reason to fear.
75
00:09:04,500 --> 00:09:09,500
Yet he said, My eyes, this is speaking for God,
76
00:09:09,500 --> 00:09:16,500
My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land.
77
00:09:16,500 --> 00:09:24,500
I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them.
78
00:09:24,500 --> 00:09:29,500
I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord.
79
00:09:29,500 --> 00:09:39,500
They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
80
00:09:39,500 --> 00:09:45,500
The prophet Micah tells of his hope even in the midst of being betrayed.
81
00:09:45,500 --> 00:09:49,500
For a son dishonors his father, we know that.
82
00:09:49,500 --> 00:09:56,500
A daughter rises up against her mother. A daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
83
00:09:56,500 --> 00:10:00,500
A man's enemies are the members of his own household.
84
00:10:00,500 --> 00:10:06,500
But as for me, Micah says, I watch in hope for the Lord.
85
00:10:06,500 --> 00:10:13,500
I wait for my God, my Savior. My God will hear me.
86
00:10:13,500 --> 00:10:19,500
So what can you do with your very real fears for your prodigal?
87
00:10:19,500 --> 00:10:25,500
Write them down. Give them to God. Make them an offering.
88
00:10:25,500 --> 00:10:31,500
Give thanks. Take God at his word. Do not be afraid.
89
00:10:31,500 --> 00:10:37,500
Choose one to start with. Seek to do it today.
90
00:10:37,500 --> 00:10:41,500
Let me just say those again. You can just write them down.
91
00:10:41,500 --> 00:10:47,500
But then you can give them to God. You can even make them like an offering to God.
92
00:10:47,500 --> 00:10:56,500
You can give thanks that God is working. And you can take God at his word when he says, do not be afraid.
93
00:10:56,500 --> 00:11:03,500
Choose one to start with and seek to take a step toward it today.
