Hope 5: A Door and An Anchor, episode 57

Hope 5: A Door and An Anchor, episode 57

You may know the story of Hosea. God asked him to be a living symbol of His faithfulness to unfaithful Israel. So Hosea married a prostitute, loved her, gave her children—and pursued her when she returned to her former life.

God did the same to Israel—pursued her time and again when she turned from Him as she chose a valley of trouble instead of the goodness of the one who loved her.

Through Hosea God said to Israel, "…I will make the Valley of trouble a door of hope."

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,320
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal,

2
00:00:08,320 --> 00:00:12,920
and also help and hope for your own life journey.

3
00:00:12,920 --> 00:00:18,360
Today we are wrapping up a five-part series on hope.

4
00:00:18,360 --> 00:00:26,160
I hope it's been helpful and hopeful for you, because we certainly all need hope in our lives,

5
00:00:26,160 --> 00:00:31,160
but especially when you love a prodigal, we need hope.

6
00:00:31,160 --> 00:00:38,840
So as I'm talking about the door of hope and an anchor of hope,

7
00:00:38,840 --> 00:00:47,480
that you'll think, all right, what can I take from this that will help me today or tomorrow in my life with my loved one?

8
00:00:47,480 --> 00:00:51,560
Write it down. You'll forget it otherwise.

9
00:00:51,560 --> 00:00:54,960
Okay, a door of hope.

10
00:00:54,960 --> 00:00:57,760
You may know the story of Hosea.

11
00:00:57,760 --> 00:01:04,360
God asked him to be a living symbol of his faithfulness to unfaithful Israel.

12
00:01:04,360 --> 00:01:14,760
So Hosea married a prostitute, loved her, gave her children, and pursued her when she returned to her former life.

13
00:01:14,760 --> 00:01:19,120
He's a picture of what God did for Israel.

14
00:01:19,120 --> 00:01:31,360
Hosea pursued her time and again when she turned from him as she chose a valley of trouble instead of the goodness of the one who loved her.

15
00:01:31,360 --> 00:01:40,360
Through Hosea, God said to Israel, I will make the valley of trouble a door of hope.

16
00:01:40,360 --> 00:01:43,560
Doesn't that just speak exactly to us?

17
00:01:43,560 --> 00:01:55,360
He's saying that the valley of trouble where our loved ones are choosing to live, he's going to turn it into a door of hope.

18
00:01:55,360 --> 00:02:04,160
Our kids, our family, our friends, our loved ones have chosen a path that leads to the valley of trouble.

19
00:02:04,160 --> 00:02:14,960
They experience the consequences of their own choices and they enter into danger that they don't even comprehend.

20
00:02:14,960 --> 00:02:19,360
We, therefore, live with fear of what might happen to them.

21
00:02:19,360 --> 00:02:28,960
As their choices lead them deeper and deeper into the valley of trouble, our fears lead us deeper and deeper into hopelessness.

22
00:02:28,960 --> 00:02:39,760
But God tells us, do not despair. I will make the valley of trouble a door of hope.

23
00:02:39,760 --> 00:02:44,160
God himself will meet them in that valley.

24
00:02:44,160 --> 00:02:57,760
He will open their eyes to see the depths of their pain and futility and danger, and he will open a door of hope to them and lead them back into the light.

25
00:02:57,760 --> 00:03:00,360
Haven't you seen that happen?

26
00:03:00,360 --> 00:03:11,960
I know, I know of many when they're in the worst place they can be, God has met them and they've said, oh help, and God says, here I am.

27
00:03:11,960 --> 00:03:13,960
He gives hope.

28
00:03:13,960 --> 00:03:22,360
Of course, we don't know when he will open that door, but we know he is true to his names.

29
00:03:22,360 --> 00:03:25,760
And remember, one of his names is hope.

30
00:03:25,760 --> 00:03:38,360
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

31
00:03:38,360 --> 00:03:51,360
May God fill you with hope even in the valley of trouble because it's in that valley that our loved ones often discover a door of hope.

32
00:03:51,360 --> 00:03:54,360
Hope is also an anchor.

33
00:03:54,360 --> 00:03:58,360
My son Josh and his wife Leslie loved to fish.

34
00:03:58,360 --> 00:04:11,560
Before they moved to their little farm, they owned a small boat and spent many hours in the ocean off Cocoa Beach and in the shipping channel running by a substantial rock jetty.

35
00:04:11,560 --> 00:04:15,560
The fish were usually biting by the jetty.

36
00:04:15,560 --> 00:04:29,560
So they would pick a spot near the jetty on the edge of the channel and drop anchor and fish for hours unless, of course, the anchor didn't hold, which happened occasionally.

37
00:04:29,560 --> 00:04:33,560
Josh describes what they had to do when the anchor didn't hold.

38
00:04:33,560 --> 00:04:42,560
I had to drop my pole, hopefully in the boat, he said, run up to the front and start pulling in the anchor as fast as I can.

39
00:04:42,560 --> 00:04:50,560
Leslie would quickly start the engine and turn us away from the jetty or we could have a big hole in the hull.

40
00:04:50,560 --> 00:04:56,560
If his anchor didn't hold, it could have been disastrous.

41
00:04:56,560 --> 00:05:00,560
But we have an anchor that will hold.

42
00:05:00,560 --> 00:05:02,560
We read in Hebrews.

43
00:05:02,560 --> 00:05:09,560
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

44
00:05:09,560 --> 00:05:21,560
It enters into the inner sanctuary behind the curtain as in the Jewish temple where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.

45
00:05:21,560 --> 00:05:28,560
Hope is an anchor for our souls, firm and secure.

46
00:05:28,560 --> 00:05:38,560
It's not going to give way when the wind comes and the waves come because an anchor that will hold must be able to hold in any kind of undersea

47
00:05:38,560 --> 00:05:42,560
terrain and strong currents and wind and waves.

48
00:05:42,560 --> 00:05:44,560
All of that can affect it.

49
00:05:44,560 --> 00:05:49,560
And God says, he's the anchor that will hold.

50
00:05:49,560 --> 00:05:52,560
He's firm and secure.

51
00:05:52,560 --> 00:05:57,560
Jesus himself said, the Lord is my portion.

52
00:05:57,560 --> 00:06:00,560
Therefore, I will wait for him.

53
00:06:00,560 --> 00:06:03,560
Jesus is talking about God is the anchor.

54
00:06:03,560 --> 00:06:09,560
He is the anchor for our lives, for our hope, an anchor of hope.

55
00:06:09,560 --> 00:06:13,560
Hear God's word for you in Isaiah 49.

56
00:06:13,560 --> 00:06:17,560
Then you will know that I am the Lord.

57
00:06:17,560 --> 00:06:23,560
Those who hope in me will not be disappointed.

58
00:06:23,560 --> 00:06:27,560
Receive the prayer of Paul in Ephesians 1.

59
00:06:27,560 --> 00:06:36,560
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you,

60
00:06:36,560 --> 00:06:46,560
the riches of his glorious inheritance in his people and his incomparably great power for us to believe.

61
00:06:46,560 --> 00:06:49,560
Know the hope to which he's called you.

62
00:06:49,560 --> 00:06:59,560
As we enter into the war room on behalf of our prodigals, as we accept God's invitation to come to his throne of grace,

63
00:06:59,560 --> 00:07:04,560
we can do so with confidence that our hope will hold.

64
00:07:04,560 --> 00:07:09,560
Jesus is the anchor who is solid and dependable.

65
00:07:09,560 --> 00:07:14,560
When we pray for our prodigals, we pour out our heart's desires.

66
00:07:14,560 --> 00:07:16,560
We cry out to God.

67
00:07:16,560 --> 00:07:22,560
We beseech him to woo and win, to rescue and restore.

68
00:07:22,560 --> 00:07:31,560
We ask him to lavish them with love, immerse them in his mercy, embrace them with his grace.

69
00:07:31,560 --> 00:07:37,560
We know the God of hope is our anchor, and our anchor will hold.

70
00:07:37,560 --> 00:07:45,560
We join with Micah in proclaiming, but as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord.

71
00:07:45,560 --> 00:07:48,560
I wait for my God, my Savior.

72
00:07:48,560 --> 00:07:51,560
My God will hear me.

73
00:07:51,560 --> 00:08:00,560
As much as we pursue, pray, pray for, adore, give mercy, persevere, never give up,

74
00:08:00,560 --> 00:08:11,560
and so much more in pursuing redemption, restoration, reconciliation, and relationship with our love prodigals,

75
00:08:11,560 --> 00:08:23,560
so much infinitely more does God do all those for us and for our loved ones, so we can hope.

76
00:08:23,560 --> 00:08:27,560
I have several questions for you.

77
00:08:27,560 --> 00:08:33,560
What does your prodigal's valley of trouble look like?

78
00:08:33,560 --> 00:08:37,560
Can you trust God to turn it into a door of hope?

79
00:08:37,560 --> 00:08:40,560
Why or why not?

80
00:08:40,560 --> 00:08:42,560
Look through this a little.

81
00:08:42,560 --> 00:08:44,560
There he is in the worst place.

82
00:08:44,560 --> 00:08:48,560
There she is making really bad choices.

83
00:08:48,560 --> 00:08:50,560
Valley of trouble, for sure.

84
00:08:50,560 --> 00:08:56,560
God says, that's where I'll meet him, and I'll open a door of hope.

85
00:08:56,560 --> 00:09:00,560
Can you imagine how that might be?

86
00:09:00,560 --> 00:09:07,560
What other anchors have you tried to rely on and see them fail?

87
00:09:07,560 --> 00:09:15,560
I thought for sure that somebody that Josh was working with, who was a good person, strong believer,

88
00:09:15,560 --> 00:09:21,560
would be the place where he would find that door of hope or an anchor that held,

89
00:09:21,560 --> 00:09:28,560
or I thought hanging out with some other people or just anything where I could get him into a good place.

90
00:09:28,560 --> 00:09:31,560
But that wasn't where it happened.

91
00:09:31,560 --> 00:09:36,560
It happened when his valley was filled with trouble.

92
00:09:36,560 --> 00:09:38,560
And he despaired.

93
00:09:38,560 --> 00:09:41,560
And there was no hope for him or us.

94
00:09:41,560 --> 00:09:48,560
And God opened the door of hope and grabbed hold and held on firmly and securely.

95
00:09:48,560 --> 00:09:55,560
When has hope in God been your anchor, the force that firmly secures you?

96
00:09:55,560 --> 00:10:11,560
I really encourage you to think about what it is that God is doing that can give you hope as we're wrapping up this time of looking at hope that he offers.

97
00:10:11,560 --> 00:10:18,560
Probably hope is the thing that I hear most from people who love a prodigal.

98
00:10:18,560 --> 00:10:21,560
I have no hope. I've lost all hope.

99
00:10:21,560 --> 00:10:23,560
It just seems hopeless.

100
00:10:23,560 --> 00:10:33,560
And yet we've talked five sessions here on the hope that God assures us that he himself is our hope.

101
00:10:33,560 --> 00:10:43,560
And so I really pray that God would open your heart and your mind to see the hope that he has to give you.

102
00:10:43,560 --> 00:10:51,560
And you may see quickly new changes for your loved one, but it may take time.

103
00:10:51,560 --> 00:10:53,560
Know that God is working.

104
00:10:53,560 --> 00:10:55,560
Know that he won't leave you.

105
00:10:55,560 --> 00:10:59,560
Know that he will not abandon you or your loved ones.

106
00:10:59,560 --> 00:11:03,560
And he turns trouble into hope.

107
00:11:03,560 --> 00:11:05,560
I love that.

108
00:11:05,560 --> 00:11:08,560
Thanks for joining me again.

109
00:11:08,560 --> 00:11:13,560
Make sure you check the show notes for some resources.

110
00:11:13,560 --> 00:11:30,560
And I wanted to tell you that next week, if you listen to my interview with Pam Lanhart, she told about losing her son Jake, who had been clean from a lung addiction for a year.

111
00:11:30,560 --> 00:11:33,560
And things were going great.

112
00:11:33,560 --> 00:11:34,560
And he made one mistake.

113
00:11:34,560 --> 00:11:39,560
And it was a poisoned drug.

114
00:11:39,560 --> 00:11:41,560
And he was gone.

115
00:11:41,560 --> 00:11:44,560
And she's very brokenhearted.

116
00:11:44,560 --> 00:11:46,560
But she's trusting God.

117
00:11:46,560 --> 00:11:56,560
And she's able to put into her ministry, which is called Thrive Family Recovery, all that she's been learning.

118
00:11:56,560 --> 00:11:59,560
And so next week we'll be talking with her again.

119
00:11:59,560 --> 00:12:12,560
And she's going to share some of the resources, both specific places, but also scripture and resources of how to work with your prodigal.

120
00:12:12,560 --> 00:12:15,560
So you won't want to miss that.

121
00:12:15,560 --> 00:12:30,560
Until next week, God bless you with overflowing hope.
