I Am Light, episode 84

I Am Light, episode 84

“Jeedoo, it’s dark,” My grandson was spending the night. He whimpered, “I’m afraid of the dark.”

After a few reassurances and a night light, he went back to sleep.

I understand. I’m still a little afraid of the dark too.

I am grateful that “the people living in darkness have seen a great light.” That light is Jesus.

If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here

2
00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:10,000
when you love a prodigal.

3
00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:15,000
And also help and hope for your own life journey.

4
00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:23,000
Last week we looked at the first of seven I Am's that Jesus called himself.

5
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
Names that assure us that he is everything we need in life.

6
00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:32,000
And that's going to help us make it through our wilderness journey.

7
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:40,000
Today we look at a second I Am that is very meaningful to me.

8
00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:46,000
Be sure to jot down what it might mean for you.

9
00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:51,000
Jidu! That's my grandmother name. Jidu! It's dark!

10
00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:55,000
My grandson was spending the night.

11
00:00:55,000 --> 00:00:59,000
He whimpered, I'm afraid of the dark.

12
00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:05,000
After a few reassurances and a night light, he went back to sleep.

13
00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:09,000
I understand, I'm a little afraid of the dark too.

14
00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:14,000
Just the other night my husband was gone and the wind was howling.

15
00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:20,000
Clouds cloaked the moon and heavy rain completed the darkness.

16
00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:22,000
Then the noise started.

17
00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:27,000
Repeated sounds like someone walking downstairs.

18
00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:32,000
Should I panic? What will I do?

19
00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:35,000
No, I know that noise I thought.

20
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:37,000
I've heard it before.

21
00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:43,000
It's just the tree branches blowing against and scraping against the windows.

22
00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:45,000
My fear subsided.

23
00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:49,000
But still I prefer light, not dark.

24
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:55,000
I turn lights on, I open blinds, close off dark rooms.

25
00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:00,000
I'm grateful that my ever-present phone, except when I forget it,

26
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:04,000
gives me instant access to light.

27
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:06,000
So are you afraid of the dark?

28
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:13,000
Most of us wisely have some fear of the dark because bad things can happen in the dark.

29
00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:18,000
Little things like I stumble and stub my toe.

30
00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:23,000
Or I get lost, especially driving where I'm not familiar.

31
00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:28,000
I even have accidents because I can't see where I'm going.

32
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:37,000
But even more, there is evil, sometimes terrible evil, lurking in the darkness.

33
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:46,000
So I want a nightlight in the hall, a flashlight on the path, headlights on the car,

34
00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:51,000
streetlights on the road, and sunshine in the sky.

35
00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:54,000
I love light.

36
00:02:54,000 --> 00:03:00,000
But too often, perhaps now, our world seems very dark.

37
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:09,000
And our journey with our prodigals can be a significant reason for the darkness that we experience day to day.

38
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:12,000
But gratefully, there is a light.

39
00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:15,000
His name is Jesus.

40
00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:21,000
We first learn about his gift of light to us in John chapter 1.

41
00:03:21,000 --> 00:03:25,000
In him, John writes, was life.

42
00:03:25,000 --> 00:03:30,000
And that life was the light of all mankind.

43
00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:37,000
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

44
00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:43,000
He goes on and says, There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

45
00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:53,000
He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

46
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:56,000
He himself, John, was not the light.

47
00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:00,000
He came only as a witness to the light.

48
00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:07,000
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

49
00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:11,000
And of course, that light was Jesus.

50
00:04:11,000 --> 00:04:15,000
Probably, you prefer light over darkness.

51
00:04:15,000 --> 00:04:17,000
Most people do.

52
00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:22,000
And hopefully, you have discovered the light of Jesus in your life.

53
00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:28,000
But perhaps you make occasional visits to the darkness, because we are not perfect.

54
00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:30,000
We make bad choices.

55
00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:32,000
We sin.

56
00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:42,000
Then that light of Jesus living in us breaks through and expels the darkness and leads us back into the light.

57
00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:45,000
But some do prefer darkness.

58
00:04:45,000 --> 00:04:47,000
John tells us more about light and darkness.

59
00:04:47,000 --> 00:04:59,000
He said, God's light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

60
00:04:59,000 --> 00:05:03,000
Sadly, this refers to many of our prodigals.

61
00:05:03,000 --> 00:05:09,000
They are choosing, at least at this time, to spurn the light and love the darkness.

62
00:05:09,000 --> 00:05:11,000
They make sad choices.

63
00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:13,000
They get lost.

64
00:05:13,000 --> 00:05:15,000
They put their lives at risk.

65
00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:18,000
They break our hearts.

66
00:05:18,000 --> 00:05:26,000
They abandon the lighted path that God gives them and stumble around in the dark.

67
00:05:26,000 --> 00:05:38,000
But one day, in answer to our prayers, and because of God's faithful love, Jesus will stand before them and speak these words,

68
00:05:38,000 --> 00:05:42,000
I am the light of the world.

69
00:05:42,000 --> 00:05:49,000
And on that day, we pray they receive that statement and the words that follow.

70
00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:55,000
This is Jesus saying, If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness.

71
00:05:55,000 --> 00:06:00,000
Because you will have the light that leads to life.

72
00:06:00,000 --> 00:06:02,000
So how do they get that?

73
00:06:02,000 --> 00:06:04,000
Where does this happen?

74
00:06:04,000 --> 00:06:08,000
When do they decide to choose light over darkness?

75
00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:12,000
Because the light can shine through us.

76
00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:16,000
Often, we will be the conveyors of that light.

77
00:06:16,000 --> 00:06:23,000
You see, if Jesus, through his Spirit, dwells in you, and you become the light,

78
00:06:23,000 --> 00:06:26,000
that's what Jesus is talking about.

79
00:06:26,000 --> 00:06:29,000
In fact, he says this amazing thing.

80
00:06:29,000 --> 00:06:31,000
I mean, think about this.

81
00:06:31,000 --> 00:06:35,000
Jesus said, You, that's you and me.

82
00:06:35,000 --> 00:06:39,000
You are the light of the world.

83
00:06:39,000 --> 00:06:43,000
Okay, it's one thing when Jesus says he is the light of the world.

84
00:06:43,000 --> 00:06:48,000
But then when he says we are the light of the world, how is that possible?

85
00:06:48,000 --> 00:06:52,000
Because he's living in us through his Spirit.

86
00:06:52,000 --> 00:06:58,000
He says, You are the light of the world, like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

87
00:06:58,000 --> 00:07:02,000
No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket.

88
00:07:02,000 --> 00:07:09,000
Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand where it gives light to everyone in the house.

89
00:07:09,000 --> 00:07:14,000
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see,

90
00:07:14,000 --> 00:07:19,000
so that everyone will praise you and pat you on the back.

91
00:07:19,000 --> 00:07:21,000
No, no.

92
00:07:21,000 --> 00:07:29,000
Let the light of Christ shine through you, and everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

93
00:07:29,000 --> 00:07:34,000
Do you see what an amazing truth that is?

94
00:07:34,000 --> 00:07:38,000
Jesus will shine his light through you.

95
00:07:38,000 --> 00:07:45,000
The more you live and love like Jesus, the brighter his light will be.

96
00:07:45,000 --> 00:07:52,000
And as you give love and offer mercy and extend grace, which God has given to us,

97
00:07:52,000 --> 00:08:01,000
to your loved prodigals, the more likely they are to grow weary of the dark and turn to the light.

98
00:08:01,000 --> 00:08:07,000
When they see your light shining, the light of Christ coming through you,

99
00:08:07,000 --> 00:08:11,000
they're going to think, That looks pretty good.

100
00:08:11,000 --> 00:08:14,000
I think I would like to live in the light.

101
00:08:14,000 --> 00:08:19,000
God may also shine his light through others to woo our wanderers back.

102
00:08:19,000 --> 00:08:22,000
That happened many times with our son.

103
00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:26,000
Over those 15 years, he would bring different people into his life

104
00:08:26,000 --> 00:08:29,000
who let the light of Christ shine through them.

105
00:08:29,000 --> 00:08:32,000
And they caused him to want it.

106
00:08:32,000 --> 00:08:35,000
And for a little while, he would choose it.

107
00:08:35,000 --> 00:08:39,000
He wasn't quite ready to give in, though.

108
00:08:39,000 --> 00:08:46,000
I believe, though, that his light, the light of Christ, in us,

109
00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:51,000
will be the best beacon of hope to those we pray for.

110
00:08:51,000 --> 00:08:59,000
We pray, but I believe God's light shining through us will draw them to himself.

111
00:08:59,000 --> 00:09:01,000
So what about you?

112
00:09:01,000 --> 00:09:04,000
When do you need light for your life?

113
00:09:04,000 --> 00:09:11,000
What made it look like if the light of Jesus would consistently shine through you

114
00:09:11,000 --> 00:09:14,000
to your loved prodigal?

115
00:09:14,000 --> 00:09:16,000
Write down some thoughts you have.

116
00:09:16,000 --> 00:09:21,000
Is there some way you talk to them, some way you reach out to them,

117
00:09:21,000 --> 00:09:30,000
some way you do your boundaries and consequences that send them back to darkness?

118
00:09:30,000 --> 00:09:36,000
Are there ways that you instead can be a light to lead them to the way?

119
00:09:36,000 --> 00:09:42,000
Just a reminder, tell your friends who have a prodigal about this podcast.

120
00:09:42,000 --> 00:09:46,000
We love it if you subscribe and rate it and review it.

121
00:09:46,000 --> 00:09:53,000
It helps more people know how to live and love with a prodigal.

122
00:09:53,000 --> 00:09:56,000
Let me have a prayer for you.

123
00:09:56,000 --> 00:10:04,000
I'm going to do this each week as we talk about these I Am's of Jesus.

124
00:10:04,000 --> 00:10:12,000
So this week, Lord, may your light so shine through me, through you,

125
00:10:12,000 --> 00:10:19,000
that others, especially my prodigal, will see your light, your love, your grace,

126
00:10:19,000 --> 00:10:24,000
and will turn from darkness to light.

127
00:10:24,000 --> 00:10:26,000
God bless you.
