My Top Ten Lessons Learned, episode 46 (rebroadcast)
A great way to begin the new year: I just celebrated my spiritual birthday. December 31 marked 62 years since I received God’s amazing gift of salvation, reconciliation and eternal life. What an adventure it has been! And many challenges.
Because I don’t seem to be able to remember the lessons God has taught me over the years, I turn them into slogans I can remember. Here are my top ten.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,500
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal.
2
00:00:08,500 --> 00:00:14,000
And also some help and hope for your own life journey.
3
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:25,000
Today on When You Love a Prodigal, you will learn vital truths to help you through life, including life with a prodigal.
4
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:32,000
May I encourage you to be listening for the truths that God might be speaking to you.
5
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:40,000
Be sure you jot them down. At least I need to do that, or I will have forgotten them by the end of this podcast.
6
00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:43,000
So it's Happy New Year!
7
00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000
But first, I want to talk about a birthday.
8
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:56,000
In my family, we have always celebrated birthdays, our physical birthday and our spiritual birthday.
9
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:03,000
And I just celebrated my spiritual birthday on December 31.
10
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:16,000
62 years ago, I received God's amazing gift of salvation, reconciliation, and eternal life on what became my spiritual birthday.
11
00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:21,000
On New Year's Eve, what an adventure it has been.
12
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:29,000
I have met remarkable people. I have been amazing places. I think I've been to 75 countries.
13
00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:35,000
I've done exciting things, all because I chose to follow Jesus.
14
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:38,000
But of course, there have been many challenges.
15
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:47,000
And without a doubt, the hardest challenge, the most difficult one, was 15 years of prodigal wilderness.
16
00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
But even there, Jesus has been with me.
17
00:01:52,000 --> 00:02:06,000
And as wonderful as the life he has given me has been, clearly the best is getting to know him, to love him, to obey him, to learn from him.
18
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:10,000
Now, I'm kind of a slow learner and a stubborn person.
19
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
And so I have a hard time remembering some of the things God teaches me.
20
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:25,000
And I really get tired of having to repeat lessons because I've had too many times.
21
00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:33,000
And so I began to make little slogans or sayings to help me remember the things that God has taught me.
22
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:43,000
And I have a lot of them, but I'm only going to do 10 for you, maybe the 10 that I think have been the most helpful to me.
23
00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:52,000
My brief explanation of each one represents only a tiny fraction of all that God has taught me through these lessons.
24
00:02:52,000 --> 00:03:00,000
I have whole messages on each one, but we're only getting a few words.
25
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:14,000
OK, so here we go, my top 10 lessons to help me start out the new year by remembering these things God has worked into me, pounded into me, whatever was necessary.
26
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:20,000
One, God is God and God is good.
27
00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:35,000
When circumstances are difficult or uncertain or painful or scary or just not to my liking, I remember that God is truly God.
28
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:40,000
He is sovereign. He's in control. He is aware.
29
00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:46,000
He's not so busy with some war over here or some starving people over here.
30
00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:53,000
He's aware of all of it and he is able to do something about it.
31
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:59,000
So it's very good to know that he is also good.
32
00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:04,000
It would be pretty frightening if this powerful God were evil.
33
00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:14,000
Jeremiah tells us, now listen to this, Jeremiah says God is always looking for ways to do good to us.
34
00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:17,000
Have you ever heard that before?
35
00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:19,000
I hadn't for years and years.
36
00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:25,000
And then I read it and went, he's always looking for ways to do good to us.
37
00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:28,000
What an incredible blessing.
38
00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:34,000
And it helps me a lot when things are not happening the way I like.
39
00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:41,000
Second, God is more committed to my character than to my comfort.
40
00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:44,000
Yeah, I can testify to that.
41
00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:51,000
But gratefully, he comforts me while he works on my character.
42
00:04:51,000 --> 00:05:05,000
Even after many years, God still has work to do in growing me into Christ-likeness, to live and love and act and speak and care for people as Jesus would.
43
00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:19,000
From his gentle, transforming work, I can learn how to help those in my care, especially my prodigal, to grow and be transformed and experience God's love.
44
00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:20,000
He's working on all of us.
45
00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:23,000
We don't get there until we get there.
46
00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:27,000
That is when we get to be with God for eternity.
47
00:05:27,000 --> 00:05:32,000
While we're on this earth, we're all in a growth process.
48
00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:41,000
And the most important part is, yes, he's going to teach us how to do things and how to the gifts that he's given us and the ways he wants to use us.
49
00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:47,000
But most of all, he's committed to making us like Jesus.
50
00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:53,000
And for me, that's been a long journey and probably for you and your prodigal.
51
00:05:53,000 --> 00:06:04,000
And he says, I'm working on your character and it won't be comfortable, but I have ways to comfort you in the process.
52
00:06:04,000 --> 00:06:06,000
Three, God, this is so fun.
53
00:06:06,000 --> 00:06:10,000
God is singing a love song to each of us.
54
00:06:10,000 --> 00:06:12,000
So have you ever heard it?
55
00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:14,000
Yeah, you're living it.
56
00:06:14,000 --> 00:06:16,000
You're living out his song.
57
00:06:16,000 --> 00:06:20,000
One of my favorite words from God is in Zephaniah 3.17.
58
00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:24,000
It says, He quiets us with his love.
59
00:06:24,000 --> 00:06:28,000
He rejoices over us with singing.
60
00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:36,000
And I've pictured that for each of us, God is writing a love song of our life.
61
00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:45,000
And each of the various days of our life and the opportunities and the hard things and the wonderful things and all of that,
62
00:06:45,000 --> 00:06:57,000
each one's a chapter in a book because I'm a writer or it's a verse in this song that God is singing over you and me and our prodigals.
63
00:06:57,000 --> 00:07:00,000
He's singing a love song.
64
00:07:00,000 --> 00:07:05,000
Sometimes that song is joyful and bright and lifting.
65
00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:12,000
And other times it's a little dark and sad and everything in between.
66
00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:18,000
But it's always coming from the everlasting love of our Father.
67
00:07:18,000 --> 00:07:23,000
So what song has he been singing to you lately?
68
00:07:23,000 --> 00:07:28,000
Four, the work of God is done on our knees.
69
00:07:28,000 --> 00:07:31,000
Then we find out what happened.
70
00:07:31,000 --> 00:07:36,000
Now, most of us pray, some more than others.
71
00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:41,000
We often pray in the morning or in the evening and often we'll pray at meals.
72
00:07:41,000 --> 00:07:47,000
Or when we have a desperate need or when our prodigal is who knows where.
73
00:07:47,000 --> 00:07:50,000
We pray about a lot of different things.
74
00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:54,000
And then we think we need to do something about it.
75
00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:55,000
Maybe.
76
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:57,000
Yes and no.
77
00:07:57,000 --> 00:08:04,000
Because you see, prayer is not the activity before my work.
78
00:08:04,000 --> 00:08:07,000
Prayer is my work.
79
00:08:07,000 --> 00:08:12,000
What's going to happen happens when we are on our knees before the Lord.
80
00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:16,000
That can be literal or figuratively on our knees.
81
00:08:16,000 --> 00:08:21,000
Listen, when I'm desperate for my prodigal, I was on my face a lot of times.
82
00:08:21,000 --> 00:08:32,000
But the prayer is where we engage God and bring him into it and give him the opportunity to work and do the thing.
83
00:08:32,000 --> 00:08:40,000
So the fruit that we're looking for, the changes in life, the things happening that we're hoping will happen,
84
00:08:40,000 --> 00:08:51,000
they are discovered as I get up and go to live my life and do the things that God has been equipping me to do and preparing for me.
85
00:08:51,000 --> 00:08:56,000
But the work first happens on our knees.
86
00:08:56,000 --> 00:09:03,000
Fifth, the greener grass was spray painted by the devil.
87
00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:05,000
I like that one.
88
00:09:05,000 --> 00:09:10,000
All of us are addicted to the greener grass syndrome.
89
00:09:10,000 --> 00:09:17,000
We desire something that is newer or better or more fun or more satisfying.
90
00:09:17,000 --> 00:09:24,000
Or we think some other place or job or person would be more meaningful.
91
00:09:24,000 --> 00:09:33,000
Or we envy another's life or their children who are so good and obedient or the success that they have.
92
00:09:33,000 --> 00:09:42,000
So we're always looking somewhere else for the satisfaction in our lives.
93
00:09:42,000 --> 00:09:49,000
Sometimes God uses that discontentment in our lives to spur us onto new opportunities.
94
00:09:49,000 --> 00:09:59,000
But mostly he urges us to be content, to rest in his provision.
95
00:09:59,000 --> 00:10:06,000
The evil one loves to distract and attract us with his right spray paint.
96
00:10:06,000 --> 00:10:12,000
We need, as Paul suggests, to choose contentment.
97
00:10:12,000 --> 00:10:22,000
I was communicating with one of our staff in an African country, a very poor country.
98
00:10:22,000 --> 00:10:26,000
He's going out to show the Jesus film in some villages.
99
00:10:26,000 --> 00:10:35,000
Three of them are riding across basically desert-like, all three of them on a motorcycle to cross this dusty desert.
100
00:10:35,000 --> 00:10:38,000
A two-day trip.
101
00:10:38,000 --> 00:10:47,000
I said, you know, if I put pictures on Facebook, I could maybe find someone who would like to donate something for a better vehicle.
102
00:10:47,000 --> 00:10:51,000
And he says, oh, no, this is our reality.
103
00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:53,000
We know how to do it.
104
00:10:53,000 --> 00:10:59,000
And I thought, OK, that's a contentment that I don't know if I could have unless God called me to it.
105
00:10:59,000 --> 00:11:05,000
But God says, be content where I have you.
106
00:11:05,000 --> 00:11:08,000
Make sure you're listening for where I want to take you.
107
00:11:08,000 --> 00:11:11,000
But learn contentment.
108
00:11:11,000 --> 00:11:17,000
The greener grass is spray painted by the evil one.
109
00:11:17,000 --> 00:11:23,000
Six, thank God even for the hard stuff.
110
00:11:23,000 --> 00:11:32,000
Now, if you've listened to this podcast very much, you have certainly heard me say, give thanks in all things.
111
00:11:32,000 --> 00:11:42,000
And that that, learning that and applying that has transformed my life, especially on this wilderness journey.
112
00:11:42,000 --> 00:11:51,000
Saying thank you in hard times when your loved one once again breaks your heart, when everything seems hopeless,
113
00:11:51,000 --> 00:12:06,000
expresses trust to God, opens your mind and your heart to his perspective and opens the door for his good to come in to this current situation.
114
00:12:06,000 --> 00:12:08,000
He says, give thanks.
115
00:12:08,000 --> 00:12:09,000
Just hear me.
116
00:12:09,000 --> 00:12:11,000
It works.
117
00:12:11,000 --> 00:12:13,000
I practice this.
118
00:12:13,000 --> 00:12:14,000
It's become a way of life.
119
00:12:14,000 --> 00:12:23,000
I still don't do it perfectly, but it is a way of life for me to say thank you, Lord, even when I don't like circumstances.
120
00:12:23,000 --> 00:12:26,000
And if nothing else, God gives me peace.
121
00:12:26,000 --> 00:12:28,000
And that's worth a whole lot.
122
00:12:28,000 --> 00:12:35,000
But he often then comes in and does amazing things in that negative situation.
123
00:12:35,000 --> 00:12:44,000
Seven, the devil is a liar who masquerades as truth.
124
00:12:44,000 --> 00:12:48,000
Now, maybe you've noticed how naturally we lie.
125
00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:53,000
Little children learn quickly how to avoid getting in trouble.
126
00:12:53,000 --> 00:12:56,000
Bigger children perfect it.
127
00:12:56,000 --> 00:13:00,000
And you and I, well, we're usually a little more subtle about it.
128
00:13:00,000 --> 00:13:05,000
But how easily we fall prey to the devil's scams.
129
00:13:05,000 --> 00:13:08,000
Jesus is the truth.
130
00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:13,000
And the devil has learned to masquerade as truth.
131
00:13:13,000 --> 00:13:16,000
He whispers convincing lies to us.
132
00:13:16,000 --> 00:13:19,000
He did it with even Adam.
133
00:13:19,000 --> 00:13:21,000
He did it with Jesus.
134
00:13:21,000 --> 00:13:23,000
But Jesus rebuked him.
135
00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:27,000
And he plies his trickery with us.
136
00:13:27,000 --> 00:13:36,000
But we also can resist and rebuke, as Jesus said, because we have the Spirit of Christ living in us.
137
00:13:36,000 --> 00:13:44,000
We have big open skies when it's not summer and thunderstormy.
138
00:13:44,000 --> 00:13:52,000
And there'll be these beautiful big birds flying high in the sky on the wind.
139
00:13:52,000 --> 00:13:55,000
And for a long time I thought they were eagles.
140
00:13:55,000 --> 00:13:58,000
But then I discovered they were buzzards.
141
00:13:58,000 --> 00:14:01,000
And in a sense, that's what the evil one does.
142
00:14:01,000 --> 00:14:09,000
He comes looking as much like Jesus as he can, telling us things, inviting us to things that seem good.
143
00:14:09,000 --> 00:14:11,000
But he's just tricking us.
144
00:14:11,000 --> 00:14:15,000
It's a scam, just like the phone calls you get.
145
00:14:15,000 --> 00:14:17,000
It's a scam.
146
00:14:17,000 --> 00:14:26,000
And we have to have discerning ears and eyes and heart and mind to know that this is not God, but this is.
147
00:14:26,000 --> 00:14:30,000
And he will be there for us.
148
00:14:30,000 --> 00:14:33,000
Oh, here's one of my very favorite.
149
00:14:33,000 --> 00:14:35,000
This is eight.
150
00:14:35,000 --> 00:14:39,000
God remembers that I am dust.
151
00:14:39,000 --> 00:14:42,000
You remember that God made us from dust.
152
00:14:42,000 --> 00:14:45,000
And he hasn't forgotten that.
153
00:14:45,000 --> 00:14:56,000
And this assurance in Psalm 103 encourages me day by day, every day, when I have despaired or lashed out at my prodigal
154
00:14:56,000 --> 00:15:07,000
or shaken my fists literally or figuratively at God, when I know I have fallen short of what he would like for me,
155
00:15:07,000 --> 00:15:11,000
when I have failed, when I have really blown it,
156
00:15:11,000 --> 00:15:18,000
he reminds me not that he's judging me for how bad I've been or what a failure I am.
157
00:15:18,000 --> 00:15:23,000
He says, no, I know you're made of dust.
158
00:15:23,000 --> 00:15:25,000
And I accept you.
159
00:15:25,000 --> 00:15:27,000
And we're still working.
160
00:15:27,000 --> 00:15:34,000
He's taken then the broken pieces of my life, and he makes them into something beautiful.
161
00:15:34,000 --> 00:15:37,000
He's an amazing God.
162
00:15:37,000 --> 00:15:41,000
Nine, this is one of my main mantras.
163
00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:45,000
Never settle for less than God's best.
164
00:15:45,000 --> 00:15:55,000
God tells us in Ephesians 2 10 that he has already prepared good works for us to do.
165
00:15:55,000 --> 00:15:59,000
And though he provides all that we need through his Spirit,
166
00:15:59,000 --> 00:16:08,000
we still need to choose the right things to step into his opportunities, to work hard for his glory.
167
00:16:08,000 --> 00:16:16,000
Sometimes I'm just too tired and I don't want to do it, or I have too many things on my plate to do any of them well,
168
00:16:16,000 --> 00:16:22,000
or perhaps something else looks more desirable.
169
00:16:22,000 --> 00:16:27,000
And I've told my children and myself many times, don't settle.
170
00:16:27,000 --> 00:16:30,000
Don't choose the easy way.
171
00:16:30,000 --> 00:16:34,000
Don't do what others say you should do when God has said something else.
172
00:16:34,000 --> 00:16:38,000
Never settle for less than God's best.
173
00:16:38,000 --> 00:16:43,000
I've had a lot of single friends that I've been able to encourage with that
174
00:16:43,000 --> 00:16:50,000
because they want so much to find the partner for life that they're willing to settle.
175
00:16:50,000 --> 00:17:00,000
And now in a job, in a marriage, in an opportunity, in relationships, hold out for God's best.
176
00:17:00,000 --> 00:17:11,000
And then the last one, my last of the ones I'm sharing lesson learned to remind me as I move into a new year.
177
00:17:11,000 --> 00:17:16,000
His way is always better than my way.
178
00:17:16,000 --> 00:17:25,000
When I came to Christ on that New Year's Eve 62 years ago, I didn't fully understand what I was doing.
179
00:17:25,000 --> 00:17:27,000
But this I was sure of.
180
00:17:27,000 --> 00:17:33,000
I was choosing God's way instead of my way for my life.
181
00:17:33,000 --> 00:17:41,000
I would love to say that that choice settled it, but in reality every day I have to make choices.
182
00:17:41,000 --> 00:17:44,000
Will I demand my own way?
183
00:17:44,000 --> 00:17:49,000
I am a person who likes to have her own way, maybe some of you too.
184
00:17:49,000 --> 00:17:56,000
Will I demand my way or will I believe the truths that I've just been sharing with you
185
00:17:56,000 --> 00:18:00,000
and surrender to God's way, to His will?
186
00:18:00,000 --> 00:18:07,000
Hopefully I will continue more and more to choose His way over mine.
187
00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:16,000
I hope these few highlights from my years of seeking to walk in the light will encourage you as they have guided me.
188
00:18:16,000 --> 00:18:27,000
May your next spiritual birthday be a great reminder of God's creativity, His love, and His faithfulness.
189
00:18:27,000 --> 00:18:29,000
So what about you?
190
00:18:29,000 --> 00:18:33,000
Which of my lessons spoke to you?
191
00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:43,000
Which one could you begin to apply today as you seek to walk with God and as you seek to love your prodigal?
192
00:18:43,000 --> 00:18:47,000
Because you see, God's always, He's always working.
193
00:18:47,000 --> 00:18:51,000
He's working on us and He's working on our loved ones.
194
00:18:51,000 --> 00:18:56,000
But we can cooperate and say, okay Lord, what do you want me to focus on?
195
00:18:56,000 --> 00:18:58,000
Maybe it's giving thanks and everything.
196
00:18:58,000 --> 00:19:04,000
Maybe it's not looking at the greener grass elsewhere.
197
00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:08,000
Maybe it's being content.
198
00:19:08,000 --> 00:19:17,000
Next week on January 11, we will pick up on the promises that God has made to us that are in His name.
199
00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:25,000
We started out in November with the first two and we will do three more in January
200
00:19:25,000 --> 00:19:28,000
to understand all that God has promised.
201
00:19:28,000 --> 00:19:33,000
Now we've been talking last week and this week about a lot of those kind of promises.
202
00:19:33,000 --> 00:19:38,000
But there are even more promises in His name that we'll look at.
203
00:19:38,000 --> 00:19:42,000
It's going to be an exciting time and I hope a real blessing to you.
204
00:19:42,000 --> 00:19:45,000
So let's look forward to that.
205
00:19:45,000 --> 00:19:53,000
The promises we'll see are that He is a good shepherd, that He is always with us, and that He keeps His promises.
206
00:19:53,000 --> 00:19:55,000
God is a promise keeper.
207
00:19:55,000 --> 00:19:58,000
Those are going to be great times.
208
00:19:58,000 --> 00:19:59,000
Happy New Year.
209
00:19:59,000 --> 00:20:06,000
May this be the best year of your life as you seek to walk well with the Lord
210
00:20:06,000 --> 00:20:14,000
and learn to let Him work through you to love your prodigal in ways that woo them back.
211
00:20:14,000 --> 00:20:24,000
God bless you.
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,500
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here at When You Love a Prodigal.
2
00:00:08,500 --> 00:00:14,000
And also some help and hope for your own life journey.
3
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:25,000
Today on When You Love a Prodigal, you will learn vital truths to help you through life, including life with a prodigal.
4
00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:32,000
May I encourage you to be listening for the truths that God might be speaking to you.
5
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:40,000
Be sure you jot them down. At least I need to do that, or I will have forgotten them by the end of this podcast.
6
00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:43,000
So it's Happy New Year!
7
00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000
But first, I want to talk about a birthday.
8
00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:56,000
In my family, we have always celebrated birthdays, our physical birthday and our spiritual birthday.
9
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:03,000
And I just celebrated my spiritual birthday on December 31.
10
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:16,000
62 years ago, I received God's amazing gift of salvation, reconciliation, and eternal life on what became my spiritual birthday.
11
00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:21,000
On New Year's Eve, what an adventure it has been.
12
00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:29,000
I have met remarkable people. I have been amazing places. I think I've been to 75 countries.
13
00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:35,000
I've done exciting things, all because I chose to follow Jesus.
14
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:38,000
But of course, there have been many challenges.
15
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:47,000
And without a doubt, the hardest challenge, the most difficult one, was 15 years of prodigal wilderness.
16
00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
But even there, Jesus has been with me.
17
00:01:52,000 --> 00:02:06,000
And as wonderful as the life he has given me has been, clearly the best is getting to know him, to love him, to obey him, to learn from him.
18
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:10,000
Now, I'm kind of a slow learner and a stubborn person.
19
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
And so I have a hard time remembering some of the things God teaches me.
20
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:25,000
And I really get tired of having to repeat lessons because I've had too many times.
21
00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:33,000
And so I began to make little slogans or sayings to help me remember the things that God has taught me.
22
00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:43,000
And I have a lot of them, but I'm only going to do 10 for you, maybe the 10 that I think have been the most helpful to me.
23
00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:52,000
My brief explanation of each one represents only a tiny fraction of all that God has taught me through these lessons.
24
00:02:52,000 --> 00:03:00,000
I have whole messages on each one, but we're only getting a few words.
25
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:14,000
OK, so here we go, my top 10 lessons to help me start out the new year by remembering these things God has worked into me, pounded into me, whatever was necessary.
26
00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:20,000
One, God is God and God is good.
27
00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:35,000
When circumstances are difficult or uncertain or painful or scary or just not to my liking, I remember that God is truly God.
28
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:40,000
He is sovereign. He's in control. He is aware.
29
00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:46,000
He's not so busy with some war over here or some starving people over here.
30
00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:53,000
He's aware of all of it and he is able to do something about it.
31
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:59,000
So it's very good to know that he is also good.
32
00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:04,000
It would be pretty frightening if this powerful God were evil.
33
00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:14,000
Jeremiah tells us, now listen to this, Jeremiah says God is always looking for ways to do good to us.
34
00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:17,000
Have you ever heard that before?
35
00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:19,000
I hadn't for years and years.
36
00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:25,000
And then I read it and went, he's always looking for ways to do good to us.
37
00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:28,000
What an incredible blessing.
38
00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:34,000
And it helps me a lot when things are not happening the way I like.
39
00:04:34,000 --> 00:04:41,000
Second, God is more committed to my character than to my comfort.
40
00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:44,000
Yeah, I can testify to that.
41
00:04:44,000 --> 00:04:51,000
But gratefully, he comforts me while he works on my character.
42
00:04:51,000 --> 00:05:05,000
Even after many years, God still has work to do in growing me into Christ-likeness, to live and love and act and speak and care for people as Jesus would.
43
00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:19,000
From his gentle, transforming work, I can learn how to help those in my care, especially my prodigal, to grow and be transformed and experience God's love.
44
00:05:19,000 --> 00:05:20,000
He's working on all of us.
45
00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:23,000
We don't get there until we get there.
46
00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:27,000
That is when we get to be with God for eternity.
47
00:05:27,000 --> 00:05:32,000
While we're on this earth, we're all in a growth process.
48
00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:41,000
And the most important part is, yes, he's going to teach us how to do things and how to the gifts that he's given us and the ways he wants to use us.
49
00:05:41,000 --> 00:05:47,000
But most of all, he's committed to making us like Jesus.
50
00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:53,000
And for me, that's been a long journey and probably for you and your prodigal.
51
00:05:53,000 --> 00:06:04,000
And he says, I'm working on your character and it won't be comfortable, but I have ways to comfort you in the process.
52
00:06:04,000 --> 00:06:06,000
Three, God, this is so fun.
53
00:06:06,000 --> 00:06:10,000
God is singing a love song to each of us.
54
00:06:10,000 --> 00:06:12,000
So have you ever heard it?
55
00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:14,000
Yeah, you're living it.
56
00:06:14,000 --> 00:06:16,000
You're living out his song.
57
00:06:16,000 --> 00:06:20,000
One of my favorite words from God is in Zephaniah 3.17.
58
00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:24,000
It says, He quiets us with his love.
59
00:06:24,000 --> 00:06:28,000
He rejoices over us with singing.
60
00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:36,000
And I've pictured that for each of us, God is writing a love song of our life.
61
00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:45,000
And each of the various days of our life and the opportunities and the hard things and the wonderful things and all of that,
62
00:06:45,000 --> 00:06:57,000
each one's a chapter in a book because I'm a writer or it's a verse in this song that God is singing over you and me and our prodigals.
63
00:06:57,000 --> 00:07:00,000
He's singing a love song.
64
00:07:00,000 --> 00:07:05,000
Sometimes that song is joyful and bright and lifting.
65
00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:12,000
And other times it's a little dark and sad and everything in between.
66
00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:18,000
But it's always coming from the everlasting love of our Father.
67
00:07:18,000 --> 00:07:23,000
So what song has he been singing to you lately?
68
00:07:23,000 --> 00:07:28,000
Four, the work of God is done on our knees.
69
00:07:28,000 --> 00:07:31,000
Then we find out what happened.
70
00:07:31,000 --> 00:07:36,000
Now, most of us pray, some more than others.
71
00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:41,000
We often pray in the morning or in the evening and often we'll pray at meals.
72
00:07:41,000 --> 00:07:47,000
Or when we have a desperate need or when our prodigal is who knows where.
73
00:07:47,000 --> 00:07:50,000
We pray about a lot of different things.
74
00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:54,000
And then we think we need to do something about it.
75
00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:55,000
Maybe.
76
00:07:55,000 --> 00:07:57,000
Yes and no.
77
00:07:57,000 --> 00:08:04,000
Because you see, prayer is not the activity before my work.
78
00:08:04,000 --> 00:08:07,000
Prayer is my work.
79
00:08:07,000 --> 00:08:12,000
What's going to happen happens when we are on our knees before the Lord.
80
00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:16,000
That can be literal or figuratively on our knees.
81
00:08:16,000 --> 00:08:21,000
Listen, when I'm desperate for my prodigal, I was on my face a lot of times.
82
00:08:21,000 --> 00:08:32,000
But the prayer is where we engage God and bring him into it and give him the opportunity to work and do the thing.
83
00:08:32,000 --> 00:08:40,000
So the fruit that we're looking for, the changes in life, the things happening that we're hoping will happen,
84
00:08:40,000 --> 00:08:51,000
they are discovered as I get up and go to live my life and do the things that God has been equipping me to do and preparing for me.
85
00:08:51,000 --> 00:08:56,000
But the work first happens on our knees.
86
00:08:56,000 --> 00:09:03,000
Fifth, the greener grass was spray painted by the devil.
87
00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:05,000
I like that one.
88
00:09:05,000 --> 00:09:10,000
All of us are addicted to the greener grass syndrome.
89
00:09:10,000 --> 00:09:17,000
We desire something that is newer or better or more fun or more satisfying.
90
00:09:17,000 --> 00:09:24,000
Or we think some other place or job or person would be more meaningful.
91
00:09:24,000 --> 00:09:33,000
Or we envy another's life or their children who are so good and obedient or the success that they have.
92
00:09:33,000 --> 00:09:42,000
So we're always looking somewhere else for the satisfaction in our lives.
93
00:09:42,000 --> 00:09:49,000
Sometimes God uses that discontentment in our lives to spur us onto new opportunities.
94
00:09:49,000 --> 00:09:59,000
But mostly he urges us to be content, to rest in his provision.
95
00:09:59,000 --> 00:10:06,000
The evil one loves to distract and attract us with his right spray paint.
96
00:10:06,000 --> 00:10:12,000
We need, as Paul suggests, to choose contentment.
97
00:10:12,000 --> 00:10:22,000
I was communicating with one of our staff in an African country, a very poor country.
98
00:10:22,000 --> 00:10:26,000
He's going out to show the Jesus film in some villages.
99
00:10:26,000 --> 00:10:35,000
Three of them are riding across basically desert-like, all three of them on a motorcycle to cross this dusty desert.
100
00:10:35,000 --> 00:10:38,000
A two-day trip.
101
00:10:38,000 --> 00:10:47,000
I said, you know, if I put pictures on Facebook, I could maybe find someone who would like to donate something for a better vehicle.
102
00:10:47,000 --> 00:10:51,000
And he says, oh, no, this is our reality.
103
00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:53,000
We know how to do it.
104
00:10:53,000 --> 00:10:59,000
And I thought, OK, that's a contentment that I don't know if I could have unless God called me to it.
105
00:10:59,000 --> 00:11:05,000
But God says, be content where I have you.
106
00:11:05,000 --> 00:11:08,000
Make sure you're listening for where I want to take you.
107
00:11:08,000 --> 00:11:11,000
But learn contentment.
108
00:11:11,000 --> 00:11:17,000
The greener grass is spray painted by the evil one.
109
00:11:17,000 --> 00:11:23,000
Six, thank God even for the hard stuff.
110
00:11:23,000 --> 00:11:32,000
Now, if you've listened to this podcast very much, you have certainly heard me say, give thanks in all things.
111
00:11:32,000 --> 00:11:42,000
And that that, learning that and applying that has transformed my life, especially on this wilderness journey.
112
00:11:42,000 --> 00:11:51,000
Saying thank you in hard times when your loved one once again breaks your heart, when everything seems hopeless,
113
00:11:51,000 --> 00:12:06,000
expresses trust to God, opens your mind and your heart to his perspective and opens the door for his good to come in to this current situation.
114
00:12:06,000 --> 00:12:08,000
He says, give thanks.
115
00:12:08,000 --> 00:12:09,000
Just hear me.
116
00:12:09,000 --> 00:12:11,000
It works.
117
00:12:11,000 --> 00:12:13,000
I practice this.
118
00:12:13,000 --> 00:12:14,000
It's become a way of life.
119
00:12:14,000 --> 00:12:23,000
I still don't do it perfectly, but it is a way of life for me to say thank you, Lord, even when I don't like circumstances.
120
00:12:23,000 --> 00:12:26,000
And if nothing else, God gives me peace.
121
00:12:26,000 --> 00:12:28,000
And that's worth a whole lot.
122
00:12:28,000 --> 00:12:35,000
But he often then comes in and does amazing things in that negative situation.
123
00:12:35,000 --> 00:12:44,000
Seven, the devil is a liar who masquerades as truth.
124
00:12:44,000 --> 00:12:48,000
Now, maybe you've noticed how naturally we lie.
125
00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:53,000
Little children learn quickly how to avoid getting in trouble.
126
00:12:53,000 --> 00:12:56,000
Bigger children perfect it.
127
00:12:56,000 --> 00:13:00,000
And you and I, well, we're usually a little more subtle about it.
128
00:13:00,000 --> 00:13:05,000
But how easily we fall prey to the devil's scams.
129
00:13:05,000 --> 00:13:08,000
Jesus is the truth.
130
00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:13,000
And the devil has learned to masquerade as truth.
131
00:13:13,000 --> 00:13:16,000
He whispers convincing lies to us.
132
00:13:16,000 --> 00:13:19,000
He did it with even Adam.
133
00:13:19,000 --> 00:13:21,000
He did it with Jesus.
134
00:13:21,000 --> 00:13:23,000
But Jesus rebuked him.
135
00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:27,000
And he plies his trickery with us.
136
00:13:27,000 --> 00:13:36,000
But we also can resist and rebuke, as Jesus said, because we have the Spirit of Christ living in us.
137
00:13:36,000 --> 00:13:44,000
We have big open skies when it's not summer and thunderstormy.
138
00:13:44,000 --> 00:13:52,000
And there'll be these beautiful big birds flying high in the sky on the wind.
139
00:13:52,000 --> 00:13:55,000
And for a long time I thought they were eagles.
140
00:13:55,000 --> 00:13:58,000
But then I discovered they were buzzards.
141
00:13:58,000 --> 00:14:01,000
And in a sense, that's what the evil one does.
142
00:14:01,000 --> 00:14:09,000
He comes looking as much like Jesus as he can, telling us things, inviting us to things that seem good.
143
00:14:09,000 --> 00:14:11,000
But he's just tricking us.
144
00:14:11,000 --> 00:14:15,000
It's a scam, just like the phone calls you get.
145
00:14:15,000 --> 00:14:17,000
It's a scam.
146
00:14:17,000 --> 00:14:26,000
And we have to have discerning ears and eyes and heart and mind to know that this is not God, but this is.
147
00:14:26,000 --> 00:14:30,000
And he will be there for us.
148
00:14:30,000 --> 00:14:33,000
Oh, here's one of my very favorite.
149
00:14:33,000 --> 00:14:35,000
This is eight.
150
00:14:35,000 --> 00:14:39,000
God remembers that I am dust.
151
00:14:39,000 --> 00:14:42,000
You remember that God made us from dust.
152
00:14:42,000 --> 00:14:45,000
And he hasn't forgotten that.
153
00:14:45,000 --> 00:14:56,000
And this assurance in Psalm 103 encourages me day by day, every day, when I have despaired or lashed out at my prodigal
154
00:14:56,000 --> 00:15:07,000
or shaken my fists literally or figuratively at God, when I know I have fallen short of what he would like for me,
155
00:15:07,000 --> 00:15:11,000
when I have failed, when I have really blown it,
156
00:15:11,000 --> 00:15:18,000
he reminds me not that he's judging me for how bad I've been or what a failure I am.
157
00:15:18,000 --> 00:15:23,000
He says, no, I know you're made of dust.
158
00:15:23,000 --> 00:15:25,000
And I accept you.
159
00:15:25,000 --> 00:15:27,000
And we're still working.
160
00:15:27,000 --> 00:15:34,000
He's taken then the broken pieces of my life, and he makes them into something beautiful.
161
00:15:34,000 --> 00:15:37,000
He's an amazing God.
162
00:15:37,000 --> 00:15:41,000
Nine, this is one of my main mantras.
163
00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:45,000
Never settle for less than God's best.
164
00:15:45,000 --> 00:15:55,000
God tells us in Ephesians 2 10 that he has already prepared good works for us to do.
165
00:15:55,000 --> 00:15:59,000
And though he provides all that we need through his Spirit,
166
00:15:59,000 --> 00:16:08,000
we still need to choose the right things to step into his opportunities, to work hard for his glory.
167
00:16:08,000 --> 00:16:16,000
Sometimes I'm just too tired and I don't want to do it, or I have too many things on my plate to do any of them well,
168
00:16:16,000 --> 00:16:22,000
or perhaps something else looks more desirable.
169
00:16:22,000 --> 00:16:27,000
And I've told my children and myself many times, don't settle.
170
00:16:27,000 --> 00:16:30,000
Don't choose the easy way.
171
00:16:30,000 --> 00:16:34,000
Don't do what others say you should do when God has said something else.
172
00:16:34,000 --> 00:16:38,000
Never settle for less than God's best.
173
00:16:38,000 --> 00:16:43,000
I've had a lot of single friends that I've been able to encourage with that
174
00:16:43,000 --> 00:16:50,000
because they want so much to find the partner for life that they're willing to settle.
175
00:16:50,000 --> 00:17:00,000
And now in a job, in a marriage, in an opportunity, in relationships, hold out for God's best.
176
00:17:00,000 --> 00:17:11,000
And then the last one, my last of the ones I'm sharing lesson learned to remind me as I move into a new year.
177
00:17:11,000 --> 00:17:16,000
His way is always better than my way.
178
00:17:16,000 --> 00:17:25,000
When I came to Christ on that New Year's Eve 62 years ago, I didn't fully understand what I was doing.
179
00:17:25,000 --> 00:17:27,000
But this I was sure of.
180
00:17:27,000 --> 00:17:33,000
I was choosing God's way instead of my way for my life.
181
00:17:33,000 --> 00:17:41,000
I would love to say that that choice settled it, but in reality every day I have to make choices.
182
00:17:41,000 --> 00:17:44,000
Will I demand my own way?
183
00:17:44,000 --> 00:17:49,000
I am a person who likes to have her own way, maybe some of you too.
184
00:17:49,000 --> 00:17:56,000
Will I demand my way or will I believe the truths that I've just been sharing with you
185
00:17:56,000 --> 00:18:00,000
and surrender to God's way, to His will?
186
00:18:00,000 --> 00:18:07,000
Hopefully I will continue more and more to choose His way over mine.
187
00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:16,000
I hope these few highlights from my years of seeking to walk in the light will encourage you as they have guided me.
188
00:18:16,000 --> 00:18:27,000
May your next spiritual birthday be a great reminder of God's creativity, His love, and His faithfulness.
189
00:18:27,000 --> 00:18:29,000
So what about you?
190
00:18:29,000 --> 00:18:33,000
Which of my lessons spoke to you?
191
00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:43,000
Which one could you begin to apply today as you seek to walk with God and as you seek to love your prodigal?
192
00:18:43,000 --> 00:18:47,000
Because you see, God's always, He's always working.
193
00:18:47,000 --> 00:18:51,000
He's working on us and He's working on our loved ones.
194
00:18:51,000 --> 00:18:56,000
But we can cooperate and say, okay Lord, what do you want me to focus on?
195
00:18:56,000 --> 00:18:58,000
Maybe it's giving thanks and everything.
196
00:18:58,000 --> 00:19:04,000
Maybe it's not looking at the greener grass elsewhere.
197
00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:08,000
Maybe it's being content.
198
00:19:08,000 --> 00:19:17,000
Next week on January 11, we will pick up on the promises that God has made to us that are in His name.
199
00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:25,000
We started out in November with the first two and we will do three more in January
200
00:19:25,000 --> 00:19:28,000
to understand all that God has promised.
201
00:19:28,000 --> 00:19:33,000
Now we've been talking last week and this week about a lot of those kind of promises.
202
00:19:33,000 --> 00:19:38,000
But there are even more promises in His name that we'll look at.
203
00:19:38,000 --> 00:19:42,000
It's going to be an exciting time and I hope a real blessing to you.
204
00:19:42,000 --> 00:19:45,000
So let's look forward to that.
205
00:19:45,000 --> 00:19:53,000
The promises we'll see are that He is a good shepherd, that He is always with us, and that He keeps His promises.
206
00:19:53,000 --> 00:19:55,000
God is a promise keeper.
207
00:19:55,000 --> 00:19:58,000
Those are going to be great times.
208
00:19:58,000 --> 00:19:59,000
Happy New Year.
209
00:19:59,000 --> 00:20:06,000
May this be the best year of your life as you seek to walk well with the Lord
210
00:20:06,000 --> 00:20:14,000
and learn to let Him work through you to love your prodigal in ways that woo them back.
211
00:20:14,000 --> 00:20:24,000
God bless you.
