Replay of The Voice of Grace, episode 13

Replay of The Voice of Grace, episode 13

One of the most important ways we extend grace to our prodigals is through our words. In Colossians 4:6 Paul reminds us: Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Words are powerful. They have the potential to inflame discord and inflict great emotional harm, or the capacity to encourage repentance and restoration, and offer healing and reconciliation.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,920
Do you love a prodigal? Do you feel like you are lost in a scary and endless wilderness?

2
00:00:09,920 --> 00:00:17,320
Welcome to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast. I am Judy Douglass and I spent more than 15

3
00:00:17,320 --> 00:00:25,800
years in that wilderness. I believe together we will discover help and hope for your journey.

4
00:00:25,800 --> 00:00:31,800
Welcome back to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast. How did it go with your prodigal

5
00:00:31,800 --> 00:00:39,760
last week? Did you experience God's grace even in challenging circumstances? Did you

6
00:00:39,760 --> 00:00:48,840
find a way to extend grace to your loved one? Today we continue our look at grace, an essential

7
00:00:48,840 --> 00:00:56,280
element for living with and loving a prodigal. Now perhaps you've had a conversation with

8
00:00:56,280 --> 00:01:03,640
your prodigal something like this. Did you go to your community service? I asked calmly.

9
00:01:03,640 --> 00:01:15,760
Yes, I did, he retorted. Are you sure? I asked, accusingly. I said I did, he replied angrily.

10
00:01:15,760 --> 00:01:22,840
My voice escalated. Your supervisor called, I replied, failing to contain my anger. She

11
00:01:22,840 --> 00:01:31,040
said you didn't show up. The conversation did not improve. He turned his back, stomped

12
00:01:31,040 --> 00:01:40,000
into his room and slammed his door. Have you ever engaged in such a conversation? Most

13
00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:49,720
of us have, probably often with the same result, but it doesn't have to be that way. Have

14
00:01:49,720 --> 00:01:58,760
you ever said to your prodigal, that's disgraceful. You are so ungrateful. Each of these phrases

15
00:01:58,760 --> 00:02:08,080
contains a word with the Latin root for grace or lack of it. They mean without grace. And

16
00:02:08,080 --> 00:02:14,640
these are words any of us might have said to our prodigals because they have been true.

17
00:02:14,640 --> 00:02:22,200
Their behavior was disgraceful. They often are ungrateful. Yet God tells us that the

18
00:02:22,200 --> 00:02:29,920
opposite should be true of the words we speak. They should be full of grace. Grace we looked

19
00:02:29,920 --> 00:02:36,840
at last time, what an incredibly wonderful gift it is that God has given us to extend

20
00:02:36,840 --> 00:02:45,600
love and joy and peace to those we love. Psalm 45 2 tells us, your lips have been anointed

21
00:02:45,600 --> 00:02:54,000
with grace since God has blessed you forever. Wow, God's blessed you and me forever and

22
00:02:54,000 --> 00:03:01,080
he's anointed our lips with grace. We have the grace for when we speak. Proverbs 22

23
00:03:01,080 --> 00:03:08,080
11 says, one who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a

24
00:03:08,080 --> 00:03:15,080
friend. In other words, speaking with grace gets you places. It introduces you to people

25
00:03:15,080 --> 00:03:20,600
that you might want to know. And then there's this wonderful admonition from Colossians

26
00:03:20,600 --> 00:03:30,400
4.6. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt so you may know

27
00:03:30,400 --> 00:03:38,280
how to answer everyone. I am convinced that one of the most important ways we extend grace

28
00:03:38,280 --> 00:03:46,620
to our prodigals is through our words. Words are powerful. They have the potential to inflame

29
00:03:46,620 --> 00:03:56,000
discord and inflict great emotional harm or the capacity to encourage repentance and restoration

30
00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:04,560
and offer healing and reconciliation. Certainly we must speak truth and our prodigals often

31
00:04:04,560 --> 00:04:12,440
need to hear some hard truths. But God's word reminds us in Ephesians 4.15 how we must

32
00:04:12,440 --> 00:04:23,240
deliver those words of truth. He says, speak the truth in love. Say it in love. Say it

33
00:04:23,240 --> 00:04:32,560
with grace. Is that easy? No. Our frustration prompts negative words. Disrespect from a

34
00:04:32,560 --> 00:04:43,320
prodigal causes us to raise our voices. Anger arouses our emotion. Conflict escalates. How?

35
00:04:43,320 --> 00:04:53,080
How do we speak truth in love? How do we make sure our words are seasoned with grace? I

36
00:04:53,080 --> 00:05:02,360
have some practical thoughts for you. Some help if you remember. I sometimes don't. This

37
00:05:02,360 --> 00:05:09,280
will help in communicating with your prodigal or a child, a friend, a co-worker or even

38
00:05:09,280 --> 00:05:18,200
your spouse. When anger threatens, when harsh words hover on the tip of your tongue, first

39
00:05:18,200 --> 00:05:29,520
wait. Count to 10 before you speak or 20 or 30, whatever it takes to rein in your emotions.

40
00:05:29,520 --> 00:05:39,920
Second, moderate. Speak slowly. We tend to let our words just come out rapid fire. Moderate,

41
00:05:39,920 --> 00:05:49,560
speak slowly, calmly, gently, firmly. Breathe deeply. Slowing your words gives both of you

42
00:05:49,560 --> 00:05:57,840
time to calm down. Think. That's a good thing to do before you speak. Think. Will these

43
00:05:57,840 --> 00:06:08,560
words add fuel to the fire? We can use words that inflame or words that quench the fire.

44
00:06:08,560 --> 00:06:16,640
Sure. Would you like someone to speak to you in such words in that tone of voice? Perhaps

45
00:06:16,640 --> 00:06:24,360
not or probably not. How would you feel if a friend or loved one spoke to you like you

46
00:06:24,360 --> 00:06:34,500
are about to speak to your prodigal? Recognize this is important. The words you speak today

47
00:06:34,500 --> 00:06:42,040
may be part of your relationship with this person for all the years to come. Oh no, they'll

48
00:06:42,040 --> 00:06:49,880
forget mostly, but not always. Have you ever remembered maybe many times something negative

49
00:06:49,880 --> 00:06:57,320
spoken to you years ago and it's actually influenced how you think about yourself? That

50
00:06:57,320 --> 00:07:04,760
can happen if we speak harsh and negative words to our loved ones. Realize your tone

51
00:07:04,760 --> 00:07:15,000
of voice can turn neutral words into destructive words. If you are, or I am, sarcastic or angry

52
00:07:15,000 --> 00:07:25,120
or smirking or mocking, our tone of voice matters. And then remember this. Remember

53
00:07:25,120 --> 00:07:32,440
you love this person. This is so important. You do love this person, even if they're

54
00:07:32,440 --> 00:07:41,480
driving you crazy. You love them and you don't want to make them feel unloved, unwanted,

55
00:07:41,480 --> 00:07:51,280
rejected. You love this person. And then the last one is pray. Most of all, stop to pray

56
00:07:51,280 --> 00:07:57,700
before you speak. Make sure you're filled with God's Spirit who can give you those

57
00:07:57,700 --> 00:08:07,360
words of grace. Ask him to govern your tongue, to release his love into your heart. Choose

58
00:08:07,360 --> 00:08:15,600
to be an instrument of God's grace. Gracious words may or may not lessen the carnage in

59
00:08:15,600 --> 00:08:22,520
an immediate negative conversation, but they should help. Over time, words filled with

60
00:08:22,520 --> 00:08:31,640
grace will eliminate the fuel that feeds what often becomes an inferno of conflict. When

61
00:08:31,640 --> 00:08:39,000
grace has prevailed and the words we have spoken have not done irreparable harm, then

62
00:08:39,000 --> 00:08:47,200
return, reconciliation, and restoration will occur more easily. I'm not saying all this

63
00:08:47,200 --> 00:08:55,560
happens at once, but the more you let grace and love guide your words, the more likely

64
00:08:55,560 --> 00:09:02,680
for building a relationship that is repairable and can pull a prodigal out of the choices

65
00:09:02,680 --> 00:09:09,760
they're making. The Lord tells us, don't just say you love this person. Really show

66
00:09:09,760 --> 00:09:19,960
love. And remember, love speaks grace and so should we. I have some questions for you

67
00:09:19,960 --> 00:09:26,720
to consider as you go into this week trying to live with the voice of grace, that the

68
00:09:26,720 --> 00:09:34,060
words that come out of your mouth, especially to your prodigal, but to anyone, will be words

69
00:09:34,060 --> 00:09:42,600
seasoned with grace. How have ungraced words contributed to an escalating confrontation

70
00:09:42,600 --> 00:09:48,560
with your loved one? When have you found that the negative words that you have spoken have

71
00:09:48,560 --> 00:09:57,080
caused the conflict to increase? And when have you seen grace words contribute to peace

72
00:09:57,080 --> 00:10:03,520
and resolution? Learn to recognize that the harsh words, what they're creating, and the

73
00:10:03,520 --> 00:10:10,560
grace words, the wonderful change that they can create. And how can you make sure your

74
00:10:10,560 --> 00:10:20,000
words are seasoned with grace this week? Well, I have for you available the 10 points I read

75
00:10:20,000 --> 00:10:28,720
to you that ended in pray. I have a beautiful art page and it is available in the show notes

76
00:10:28,720 --> 00:10:34,200
of our program. And so you can go there and download that and you can work through that

77
00:10:34,200 --> 00:10:39,320
and you can let God remind you of each of these points. In fact, I'm going to remind

78
00:10:39,320 --> 00:10:53,120
you of them, just the main points right now. Wait, moderate, think, consider, recognize,

79
00:10:53,120 --> 00:11:03,440
realize, remember, pray. And I will be praying for you that your voice will be the voice

80
00:11:03,440 --> 00:11:10,960
of grace every time you speak to your loved one. God bless you.
