Rest in Release and Giving Thanks (episode 24)
You probably know the story of the monkey who wanted the banana in the bottom of the jar. He thrust his hand right in there and grabbed it—then tried to pull it out. It was stuck. He pulled and pulled, but could not get his hand, holding on to that banana, out of that jar. Until he let go of the fruit.
Often that’s the way it is for me with God and my holding on to my way with my prodigal.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,440
Do you love a prodigal? Do you feel like you are lost in a scary and endless wilderness?
2
00:00:10,440 --> 00:00:17,840
Welcome to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast. I am Judy Douglass and I spent more than 15
3
00:00:17,840 --> 00:00:26,000
years in that wilderness. I believe together we will discover help and hope for your journey.
4
00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:33,580
I'm so glad to have you back with me on my When You Love a Prodigal podcast. And for those
5
00:00:33,580 --> 00:00:39,740
of you who were listening last week, have you had any time to ask the Lord if there's
6
00:00:39,740 --> 00:00:47,940
anything you need to give up, give over to Him, repent from? How did you do on that?
7
00:00:47,940 --> 00:00:54,800
And Lord, also for forgiving, maybe especially your loved one, but maybe even yourself you
8
00:00:54,800 --> 00:01:03,320
needed to forgive. Today we're talking about two more ways to find rest in this wilderness
9
00:01:03,320 --> 00:01:12,000
journey. We're going to first look at being rest in release. Now you probably know the
10
00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:19,160
story of the monkey who saw a banana in the bottom of a jar. And so he thrust his hand
11
00:01:19,160 --> 00:01:25,840
down in there and he grabbed that banana and he tried to pull it out, but it wouldn't come
12
00:01:25,840 --> 00:01:35,960
out. And he pulled and he pulled, but he could not get his hand out holding on to that banana
13
00:01:35,960 --> 00:01:43,220
until he let go of the banana. And then he could pull his hand out. Sometimes I tell
14
00:01:43,220 --> 00:01:51,440
it a slightly different way. When I hold on to something that I want, like for my prodigal
15
00:01:51,440 --> 00:01:57,360
to change, to quit doing something, when I hold on to it, you know, when I'm holding
16
00:01:57,360 --> 00:02:05,400
on it's like I've made a fist and I'm almost shaking that in God's face. But that speaks
17
00:02:05,400 --> 00:02:15,400
defiance to him. Not only that, it basically closes up the opportunity for God to work
18
00:02:15,400 --> 00:02:23,600
in me. You see, he would have to start prying my fingers open one by one so that when he
19
00:02:23,600 --> 00:02:29,840
gets an open hand, he can take out what he didn't think should be there, an attitude
20
00:02:29,840 --> 00:02:38,280
or a demand or something that's become an idol to us or whatever it might be. But then
21
00:02:38,280 --> 00:02:47,000
he can put in to my hand what it is that he wants for me, a change in attitude, a new
22
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:55,540
opportunity, a way that he's working in me even as he works in my prodigal. Oh, how those
23
00:02:55,540 --> 00:03:02,040
of us who love prodigals need to hear this. How we hold on to that loved one and to our
24
00:03:02,040 --> 00:03:10,280
desires for her life or his life. We plead with her and with God to do what we want.
25
00:03:10,280 --> 00:03:17,120
What we want is to be in control. We want to manipulate, to coerce, to bribe. We will
26
00:03:17,120 --> 00:03:27,480
do almost anything to make our loved one come to his or her senses except let go. You see,
27
00:03:27,480 --> 00:03:37,240
holding on is exhausting. Holding on to our way really wears us out. Jesus offers us an
28
00:03:37,240 --> 00:03:45,300
amazing exchange. He says, tell you what, I'll give you my perfect way if you'll let
29
00:03:45,300 --> 00:03:55,340
go of your imperfect way. When we willingly, though perhaps reluctantly, open our hands,
30
00:03:55,340 --> 00:04:03,240
we give God permission to do his very good work in our lives and in the lives of our
31
00:04:03,240 --> 00:04:10,420
prodigals. Let me tell you a story. My friend said, he needs to fly. That's what my prayer
32
00:04:10,420 --> 00:04:17,160
partner said. She had joined with me in praying for my love prodigal for this long, hard journey.
33
00:04:17,160 --> 00:04:24,120
The journey had been wild and dark for many years, but more recently had been slowly,
34
00:04:24,120 --> 00:04:34,320
arduously but slowly moving in a better direction. Then six months before this happened, darkness
35
00:04:34,320 --> 00:04:43,640
returned. Relationships failed. Choices that had bad consequences. Pain prevailed. Despair
36
00:04:43,640 --> 00:04:53,440
deepened me. I cried. I encouraged him. I exhorted him. I lectured him. I begged him.
37
00:04:53,440 --> 00:05:02,280
I rescued him. But I did pray. And I called on this prayer warrior. One day she wrote,
38
00:05:02,280 --> 00:05:10,120
me, I was praying for him, but the Lord told me to pray for you. To pray for you to let
39
00:05:10,120 --> 00:05:19,800
go so God could catch him and enable him to fly. I paused. I hesitated. But then I said,
40
00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:28,240
Lord, he's yours. I let go. I give him to you. I obviously can't make things happen
41
00:05:28,240 --> 00:05:36,720
the way I wish they would. I'm helpless and inadequate, unable. So I entrust him to you.
42
00:05:36,720 --> 00:05:44,760
Oh, Lord, please catch him when I let go. Please, please, may he fly. He and I are both
43
00:05:44,760 --> 00:05:53,720
so weary of this dusty, brambled road. May he fly. And I said that with all sincerity
44
00:05:53,720 --> 00:06:00,640
and strong intentions. But I seem to have bungee cords attached to my hands. And as
45
00:06:00,640 --> 00:06:10,320
I let go and I fling him to the Lord, in almost no time, my heart and my hands have pulled
46
00:06:10,320 --> 00:06:19,560
him back. It's always taken many repetitions, iterations for me to really get most truths,
47
00:06:19,560 --> 00:06:26,480
including letting go. In this, God has given me some words that are helping me to keep
48
00:06:26,480 --> 00:06:32,660
my hands open. Whether it's letting my loved one fly or letting the circumstances in his
49
00:06:32,660 --> 00:06:41,580
life or our lives be other than what I would like, I keep my hands open by praying, by
50
00:06:41,580 --> 00:06:49,360
saying these words to remind myself of realities or promises or hopes that I can have. I'm
51
00:06:49,360 --> 00:07:00,240
just going to say the words. Maybe they resonate with you. Forgiven or forgiving or both. Healed,
52
00:07:00,240 --> 00:07:13,960
free to fail and free to fly. Courageous, unabandoned, trusting, trusted, hopeful, adopted, loved,
53
00:07:13,960 --> 00:07:23,080
accepted, desired, believed in or believed for, not a victim. Those were words that applied
54
00:07:23,080 --> 00:07:31,360
to my prodigal and applied to me. They were words of hope that I can turn to exhortation
55
00:07:31,360 --> 00:07:39,880
after exhortation in God's Word to entrust him along with my fears to God.
56
00:07:39,880 --> 00:07:48,600
So in Psalm 55, we read, cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you. And then
57
00:07:48,600 --> 00:07:55,200
Peter repeats basically the same thing. He says, casting all your cares on him because
58
00:07:55,200 --> 00:08:05,040
he cares for you. Matthew says something similar. He says, therefore, do not worry about tomorrow.
59
00:08:05,040 --> 00:08:11,520
Let's pause there. Have you worried about tomorrow or even today? We live there, don't
60
00:08:11,520 --> 00:08:19,580
we? We live with worries about what might happen. But tomorrow has all the worry that
61
00:08:19,580 --> 00:08:26,080
it needs by itself. You don't need to join it. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
62
00:08:26,080 --> 00:08:32,680
So he says, stick with the day. He says, I'm with you today. He is the God who is with
63
00:08:32,680 --> 00:08:43,120
us. You see, there is great rest in release, in letting go, in opening our hands to the
64
00:08:43,120 --> 00:08:50,160
Lord. What I'm going to read in a second is a declaration of release that I have said
65
00:08:50,160 --> 00:08:56,460
many times in God's presence because I have often taken my prodigal back and needed to
66
00:08:56,460 --> 00:09:02,840
release him again. I'm going to read this very brief prayer through twice. The first
67
00:09:02,840 --> 00:09:09,300
time you listen and you see, does this express the desire of your heart? If so, I'll read
68
00:09:09,300 --> 00:09:16,920
it again and you can pray along with me if that's what you want, to release your prodigal
69
00:09:16,920 --> 00:09:19,120
to the Lord.
70
00:09:19,120 --> 00:09:30,000
So to my loved prodigal, as I trust in Jesus Christ, I set you free from my worries, fears,
71
00:09:30,000 --> 00:09:37,240
and control. I trust the Holy Spirit to guide you and show you the way that is right for
72
00:09:37,240 --> 00:09:47,720
you, the way of love, joy, peace available in our Lord and the way to rest. I cannot
73
00:09:47,720 --> 00:09:55,840
force my will on you. I cannot live my life for you. I entrust you to God the Father,
74
00:09:55,840 --> 00:10:04,920
Son and Holy Spirit. You're a very special person to me and to God. I love you so much,
75
00:10:04,920 --> 00:10:11,840
but God loves you more. Your life today is totally in his hands and I trust him with
76
00:10:11,840 --> 00:10:21,080
it. In Jesus' name, I release you from my expectations. I place you on open palms to
77
00:10:21,080 --> 00:10:30,360
the Lord. I give you my blessings. I let you go. In his love, and a place to have paper
78
00:10:30,360 --> 00:10:38,120
in front of you like I do, to write a date and a signature. So let me read that again
79
00:10:38,120 --> 00:10:44,640
and if that's a prayer you would like to make, if you would like to find the rest that comes
80
00:10:44,640 --> 00:10:54,300
with release and letting go, you might want to pray this. To my loved prodigal, as I trust
81
00:10:54,300 --> 00:11:08,080
in Jesus Christ, I set you free from my worries, fears, and control. I trust the Holy Spirit
82
00:11:08,080 --> 00:11:18,680
to guide you and show you the way that is right for you. The way of love, joy, and peace
83
00:11:18,680 --> 00:11:29,880
available in our God and the way to rest. I cannot force my will on you. I cannot live
84
00:11:29,880 --> 00:11:40,600
your life for you. I entrust you to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are a very
85
00:11:40,600 --> 00:11:53,320
special person to me and to God. I love you so much, but God loves you more. Your life
86
00:11:53,320 --> 00:12:04,240
today is totally in his hands and I trust him with it. In Jesus' name, I release you
87
00:12:04,240 --> 00:12:16,160
from my expectations. I place you on open palms to the Lord. I give you my blessings.
88
00:12:16,160 --> 00:12:28,600
I let you go. In his love, your name. So there's rest in release and this one may be harder,
89
00:12:28,600 --> 00:12:37,360
I don't know. There's also rest in giving thanks. Probably even as you released that
90
00:12:37,360 --> 00:12:43,560
loved one to God's care, you might have had a struggle. Certainly you have some questions
91
00:12:43,560 --> 00:12:54,200
about everything. Why, God? Why? Why? How many times have you asked why? Why is my loved
92
00:12:54,200 --> 00:13:02,360
one making all these terrible choices? Why is my loved one breaking my heart like this?
93
00:13:02,360 --> 00:13:12,540
Why don't you do something, God? Why am I having to go through so much hurt and loss?
94
00:13:12,540 --> 00:13:19,840
These kinds of questions are natural responses when we love a prodigal. Why is this happening
95
00:13:19,840 --> 00:13:31,940
to me? Why don't you do something, God? You see, fighting against the reality is exhausting.
96
00:13:31,940 --> 00:13:41,220
God calls us instead to a supernatural response to give thanks. He says these really hard
97
00:13:41,220 --> 00:13:52,100
fathom words. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
98
00:13:52,100 --> 00:14:01,320
It is God's will for us to give thanks even in hard times. Even when our loved one does
99
00:14:01,320 --> 00:14:08,880
something that seems unforgivable. Even when they're in jail. Even when you have to go
100
00:14:08,880 --> 00:14:14,040
to the hospital because they've overdosed. Even when they've disappeared and you don't
101
00:14:14,040 --> 00:14:21,460
know where they are. But God says give thanks. I can think of three wonderful things that
102
00:14:21,460 --> 00:14:30,480
happen when I say, thank you, Lord. First, my focus changes. Instead of fixating on everything
103
00:14:30,480 --> 00:14:39,640
I hate about the reality of loving a prodigal, I instead began to focus on God and what he
104
00:14:39,640 --> 00:14:50,680
might be doing here. Then my trust expands. So I focus on him and I began to have greater
105
00:14:50,680 --> 00:14:57,580
trust. Just saying thank you, Lord implies I trust you, God. I believe you are truly
106
00:14:57,580 --> 00:15:07,040
God and you are truly good. Each time I say it, I believe it more. But then this is what
107
00:15:07,040 --> 00:15:16,160
happens. Doors open. Saying thank you, Lord is like a key that opens locked doors. Doors
108
00:15:16,160 --> 00:15:23,240
that we have bolted shut by demanding that God do things our way. The thank you key unlatches
109
00:15:23,240 --> 00:15:33,000
that bolt and gives God permission to do what he knows is best in his amazing ability to
110
00:15:33,000 --> 00:15:41,280
bring good from things that are really bad. You see there is rest in giving thanks. Sometimes
111
00:15:41,280 --> 00:15:48,120
it's really difficult. I found it helps if I can't yet say thank you in the midst of
112
00:15:48,120 --> 00:15:55,520
the latest thing my prodigal has done. I think of something I can say thank you for. Maybe
113
00:15:55,520 --> 00:16:02,120
it's a beautiful day and I can be thankful for that. Or maybe someone that you care about
114
00:16:02,120 --> 00:16:10,520
had something really good happen. Or maybe something you were cooking worked. Little
115
00:16:10,520 --> 00:16:16,560
things that you can say thank you for can build up your ability to trust God in this
116
00:16:16,560 --> 00:16:22,840
situation and say thank you. But if that's even too hard, I can go back to something
117
00:16:22,840 --> 00:16:29,720
really big that I am thankful for and that is that Jesus died on the cross for me. I'm
118
00:16:29,720 --> 00:16:37,640
thankful for that and I can say that. Then that can again open up my heart and my mind
119
00:16:37,640 --> 00:16:44,100
to be able to say thank you for the things that are going on right now that I don't understand
120
00:16:44,100 --> 00:16:52,060
and don't like. But as I begin to cultivate the choice to give thanks in every circumstance,
121
00:16:52,060 --> 00:17:00,320
the rest and freedom grow in astounding ways. So I would recommend that you say thank you
122
00:17:00,320 --> 00:17:04,560
Lord and get some rest.
123
00:17:04,560 --> 00:17:10,560
So here are some things to think about. Have you ever realized that you've been making
124
00:17:10,560 --> 00:17:18,480
a fist at the Lord? What has caused you to close up your hand and telling me he wasn't
125
00:17:18,480 --> 00:17:25,360
doing it right? Or how might the declaration of release that we read help you defeat the
126
00:17:25,360 --> 00:17:33,600
tendency to take back and hold on to have bungee cords on your hands? Or if you have
127
00:17:33,600 --> 00:17:39,120
started the practice of giving thanks, even in hard situations, how have you seen your
128
00:17:39,120 --> 00:17:47,280
focus changed, your trust expanded and new doors opened? It helps us to remember and
129
00:17:47,280 --> 00:17:54,240
be able to keep applying things when we stop and recognize them. So if you say thank you
130
00:17:54,240 --> 00:18:02,680
and you see a change in your attitude or you see doors opening, those are things to notice
131
00:18:02,680 --> 00:18:10,400
and that helps us grow in our ability to come to God with open hands and say we release
132
00:18:10,400 --> 00:18:17,660
it to you and we give thanks even if it doesn't look like what we were hoping for. May you
133
00:18:17,660 --> 00:18:24,720
find that you have a free and thankful week ahead. God bless you.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,440
Do you love a prodigal? Do you feel like you are lost in a scary and endless wilderness?
2
00:00:10,440 --> 00:00:17,840
Welcome to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast. I am Judy Douglass and I spent more than 15
3
00:00:17,840 --> 00:00:26,000
years in that wilderness. I believe together we will discover help and hope for your journey.
4
00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:33,580
I'm so glad to have you back with me on my When You Love a Prodigal podcast. And for those
5
00:00:33,580 --> 00:00:39,740
of you who were listening last week, have you had any time to ask the Lord if there's
6
00:00:39,740 --> 00:00:47,940
anything you need to give up, give over to Him, repent from? How did you do on that?
7
00:00:47,940 --> 00:00:54,800
And Lord, also for forgiving, maybe especially your loved one, but maybe even yourself you
8
00:00:54,800 --> 00:01:03,320
needed to forgive. Today we're talking about two more ways to find rest in this wilderness
9
00:01:03,320 --> 00:01:12,000
journey. We're going to first look at being rest in release. Now you probably know the
10
00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:19,160
story of the monkey who saw a banana in the bottom of a jar. And so he thrust his hand
11
00:01:19,160 --> 00:01:25,840
down in there and he grabbed that banana and he tried to pull it out, but it wouldn't come
12
00:01:25,840 --> 00:01:35,960
out. And he pulled and he pulled, but he could not get his hand out holding on to that banana
13
00:01:35,960 --> 00:01:43,220
until he let go of the banana. And then he could pull his hand out. Sometimes I tell
14
00:01:43,220 --> 00:01:51,440
it a slightly different way. When I hold on to something that I want, like for my prodigal
15
00:01:51,440 --> 00:01:57,360
to change, to quit doing something, when I hold on to it, you know, when I'm holding
16
00:01:57,360 --> 00:02:05,400
on it's like I've made a fist and I'm almost shaking that in God's face. But that speaks
17
00:02:05,400 --> 00:02:15,400
defiance to him. Not only that, it basically closes up the opportunity for God to work
18
00:02:15,400 --> 00:02:23,600
in me. You see, he would have to start prying my fingers open one by one so that when he
19
00:02:23,600 --> 00:02:29,840
gets an open hand, he can take out what he didn't think should be there, an attitude
20
00:02:29,840 --> 00:02:38,280
or a demand or something that's become an idol to us or whatever it might be. But then
21
00:02:38,280 --> 00:02:47,000
he can put in to my hand what it is that he wants for me, a change in attitude, a new
22
00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:55,540
opportunity, a way that he's working in me even as he works in my prodigal. Oh, how those
23
00:02:55,540 --> 00:03:02,040
of us who love prodigals need to hear this. How we hold on to that loved one and to our
24
00:03:02,040 --> 00:03:10,280
desires for her life or his life. We plead with her and with God to do what we want.
25
00:03:10,280 --> 00:03:17,120
What we want is to be in control. We want to manipulate, to coerce, to bribe. We will
26
00:03:17,120 --> 00:03:27,480
do almost anything to make our loved one come to his or her senses except let go. You see,
27
00:03:27,480 --> 00:03:37,240
holding on is exhausting. Holding on to our way really wears us out. Jesus offers us an
28
00:03:37,240 --> 00:03:45,300
amazing exchange. He says, tell you what, I'll give you my perfect way if you'll let
29
00:03:45,300 --> 00:03:55,340
go of your imperfect way. When we willingly, though perhaps reluctantly, open our hands,
30
00:03:55,340 --> 00:04:03,240
we give God permission to do his very good work in our lives and in the lives of our
31
00:04:03,240 --> 00:04:10,420
prodigals. Let me tell you a story. My friend said, he needs to fly. That's what my prayer
32
00:04:10,420 --> 00:04:17,160
partner said. She had joined with me in praying for my love prodigal for this long, hard journey.
33
00:04:17,160 --> 00:04:24,120
The journey had been wild and dark for many years, but more recently had been slowly,
34
00:04:24,120 --> 00:04:34,320
arduously but slowly moving in a better direction. Then six months before this happened, darkness
35
00:04:34,320 --> 00:04:43,640
returned. Relationships failed. Choices that had bad consequences. Pain prevailed. Despair
36
00:04:43,640 --> 00:04:53,440
deepened me. I cried. I encouraged him. I exhorted him. I lectured him. I begged him.
37
00:04:53,440 --> 00:05:02,280
I rescued him. But I did pray. And I called on this prayer warrior. One day she wrote,
38
00:05:02,280 --> 00:05:10,120
me, I was praying for him, but the Lord told me to pray for you. To pray for you to let
39
00:05:10,120 --> 00:05:19,800
go so God could catch him and enable him to fly. I paused. I hesitated. But then I said,
40
00:05:19,800 --> 00:05:28,240
Lord, he's yours. I let go. I give him to you. I obviously can't make things happen
41
00:05:28,240 --> 00:05:36,720
the way I wish they would. I'm helpless and inadequate, unable. So I entrust him to you.
42
00:05:36,720 --> 00:05:44,760
Oh, Lord, please catch him when I let go. Please, please, may he fly. He and I are both
43
00:05:44,760 --> 00:05:53,720
so weary of this dusty, brambled road. May he fly. And I said that with all sincerity
44
00:05:53,720 --> 00:06:00,640
and strong intentions. But I seem to have bungee cords attached to my hands. And as
45
00:06:00,640 --> 00:06:10,320
I let go and I fling him to the Lord, in almost no time, my heart and my hands have pulled
46
00:06:10,320 --> 00:06:19,560
him back. It's always taken many repetitions, iterations for me to really get most truths,
47
00:06:19,560 --> 00:06:26,480
including letting go. In this, God has given me some words that are helping me to keep
48
00:06:26,480 --> 00:06:32,660
my hands open. Whether it's letting my loved one fly or letting the circumstances in his
49
00:06:32,660 --> 00:06:41,580
life or our lives be other than what I would like, I keep my hands open by praying, by
50
00:06:41,580 --> 00:06:49,360
saying these words to remind myself of realities or promises or hopes that I can have. I'm
51
00:06:49,360 --> 00:07:00,240
just going to say the words. Maybe they resonate with you. Forgiven or forgiving or both. Healed,
52
00:07:00,240 --> 00:07:13,960
free to fail and free to fly. Courageous, unabandoned, trusting, trusted, hopeful, adopted, loved,
53
00:07:13,960 --> 00:07:23,080
accepted, desired, believed in or believed for, not a victim. Those were words that applied
54
00:07:23,080 --> 00:07:31,360
to my prodigal and applied to me. They were words of hope that I can turn to exhortation
55
00:07:31,360 --> 00:07:39,880
after exhortation in God's Word to entrust him along with my fears to God.
56
00:07:39,880 --> 00:07:48,600
So in Psalm 55, we read, cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you. And then
57
00:07:48,600 --> 00:07:55,200
Peter repeats basically the same thing. He says, casting all your cares on him because
58
00:07:55,200 --> 00:08:05,040
he cares for you. Matthew says something similar. He says, therefore, do not worry about tomorrow.
59
00:08:05,040 --> 00:08:11,520
Let's pause there. Have you worried about tomorrow or even today? We live there, don't
60
00:08:11,520 --> 00:08:19,580
we? We live with worries about what might happen. But tomorrow has all the worry that
61
00:08:19,580 --> 00:08:26,080
it needs by itself. You don't need to join it. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
62
00:08:26,080 --> 00:08:32,680
So he says, stick with the day. He says, I'm with you today. He is the God who is with
63
00:08:32,680 --> 00:08:43,120
us. You see, there is great rest in release, in letting go, in opening our hands to the
64
00:08:43,120 --> 00:08:50,160
Lord. What I'm going to read in a second is a declaration of release that I have said
65
00:08:50,160 --> 00:08:56,460
many times in God's presence because I have often taken my prodigal back and needed to
66
00:08:56,460 --> 00:09:02,840
release him again. I'm going to read this very brief prayer through twice. The first
67
00:09:02,840 --> 00:09:09,300
time you listen and you see, does this express the desire of your heart? If so, I'll read
68
00:09:09,300 --> 00:09:16,920
it again and you can pray along with me if that's what you want, to release your prodigal
69
00:09:16,920 --> 00:09:19,120
to the Lord.
70
00:09:19,120 --> 00:09:30,000
So to my loved prodigal, as I trust in Jesus Christ, I set you free from my worries, fears,
71
00:09:30,000 --> 00:09:37,240
and control. I trust the Holy Spirit to guide you and show you the way that is right for
72
00:09:37,240 --> 00:09:47,720
you, the way of love, joy, peace available in our Lord and the way to rest. I cannot
73
00:09:47,720 --> 00:09:55,840
force my will on you. I cannot live my life for you. I entrust you to God the Father,
74
00:09:55,840 --> 00:10:04,920
Son and Holy Spirit. You're a very special person to me and to God. I love you so much,
75
00:10:04,920 --> 00:10:11,840
but God loves you more. Your life today is totally in his hands and I trust him with
76
00:10:11,840 --> 00:10:21,080
it. In Jesus' name, I release you from my expectations. I place you on open palms to
77
00:10:21,080 --> 00:10:30,360
the Lord. I give you my blessings. I let you go. In his love, and a place to have paper
78
00:10:30,360 --> 00:10:38,120
in front of you like I do, to write a date and a signature. So let me read that again
79
00:10:38,120 --> 00:10:44,640
and if that's a prayer you would like to make, if you would like to find the rest that comes
80
00:10:44,640 --> 00:10:54,300
with release and letting go, you might want to pray this. To my loved prodigal, as I trust
81
00:10:54,300 --> 00:11:08,080
in Jesus Christ, I set you free from my worries, fears, and control. I trust the Holy Spirit
82
00:11:08,080 --> 00:11:18,680
to guide you and show you the way that is right for you. The way of love, joy, and peace
83
00:11:18,680 --> 00:11:29,880
available in our God and the way to rest. I cannot force my will on you. I cannot live
84
00:11:29,880 --> 00:11:40,600
your life for you. I entrust you to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are a very
85
00:11:40,600 --> 00:11:53,320
special person to me and to God. I love you so much, but God loves you more. Your life
86
00:11:53,320 --> 00:12:04,240
today is totally in his hands and I trust him with it. In Jesus' name, I release you
87
00:12:04,240 --> 00:12:16,160
from my expectations. I place you on open palms to the Lord. I give you my blessings.
88
00:12:16,160 --> 00:12:28,600
I let you go. In his love, your name. So there's rest in release and this one may be harder,
89
00:12:28,600 --> 00:12:37,360
I don't know. There's also rest in giving thanks. Probably even as you released that
90
00:12:37,360 --> 00:12:43,560
loved one to God's care, you might have had a struggle. Certainly you have some questions
91
00:12:43,560 --> 00:12:54,200
about everything. Why, God? Why? Why? How many times have you asked why? Why is my loved
92
00:12:54,200 --> 00:13:02,360
one making all these terrible choices? Why is my loved one breaking my heart like this?
93
00:13:02,360 --> 00:13:12,540
Why don't you do something, God? Why am I having to go through so much hurt and loss?
94
00:13:12,540 --> 00:13:19,840
These kinds of questions are natural responses when we love a prodigal. Why is this happening
95
00:13:19,840 --> 00:13:31,940
to me? Why don't you do something, God? You see, fighting against the reality is exhausting.
96
00:13:31,940 --> 00:13:41,220
God calls us instead to a supernatural response to give thanks. He says these really hard
97
00:13:41,220 --> 00:13:52,100
fathom words. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
98
00:13:52,100 --> 00:14:01,320
It is God's will for us to give thanks even in hard times. Even when our loved one does
99
00:14:01,320 --> 00:14:08,880
something that seems unforgivable. Even when they're in jail. Even when you have to go
100
00:14:08,880 --> 00:14:14,040
to the hospital because they've overdosed. Even when they've disappeared and you don't
101
00:14:14,040 --> 00:14:21,460
know where they are. But God says give thanks. I can think of three wonderful things that
102
00:14:21,460 --> 00:14:30,480
happen when I say, thank you, Lord. First, my focus changes. Instead of fixating on everything
103
00:14:30,480 --> 00:14:39,640
I hate about the reality of loving a prodigal, I instead began to focus on God and what he
104
00:14:39,640 --> 00:14:50,680
might be doing here. Then my trust expands. So I focus on him and I began to have greater
105
00:14:50,680 --> 00:14:57,580
trust. Just saying thank you, Lord implies I trust you, God. I believe you are truly
106
00:14:57,580 --> 00:15:07,040
God and you are truly good. Each time I say it, I believe it more. But then this is what
107
00:15:07,040 --> 00:15:16,160
happens. Doors open. Saying thank you, Lord is like a key that opens locked doors. Doors
108
00:15:16,160 --> 00:15:23,240
that we have bolted shut by demanding that God do things our way. The thank you key unlatches
109
00:15:23,240 --> 00:15:33,000
that bolt and gives God permission to do what he knows is best in his amazing ability to
110
00:15:33,000 --> 00:15:41,280
bring good from things that are really bad. You see there is rest in giving thanks. Sometimes
111
00:15:41,280 --> 00:15:48,120
it's really difficult. I found it helps if I can't yet say thank you in the midst of
112
00:15:48,120 --> 00:15:55,520
the latest thing my prodigal has done. I think of something I can say thank you for. Maybe
113
00:15:55,520 --> 00:16:02,120
it's a beautiful day and I can be thankful for that. Or maybe someone that you care about
114
00:16:02,120 --> 00:16:10,520
had something really good happen. Or maybe something you were cooking worked. Little
115
00:16:10,520 --> 00:16:16,560
things that you can say thank you for can build up your ability to trust God in this
116
00:16:16,560 --> 00:16:22,840
situation and say thank you. But if that's even too hard, I can go back to something
117
00:16:22,840 --> 00:16:29,720
really big that I am thankful for and that is that Jesus died on the cross for me. I'm
118
00:16:29,720 --> 00:16:37,640
thankful for that and I can say that. Then that can again open up my heart and my mind
119
00:16:37,640 --> 00:16:44,100
to be able to say thank you for the things that are going on right now that I don't understand
120
00:16:44,100 --> 00:16:52,060
and don't like. But as I begin to cultivate the choice to give thanks in every circumstance,
121
00:16:52,060 --> 00:17:00,320
the rest and freedom grow in astounding ways. So I would recommend that you say thank you
122
00:17:00,320 --> 00:17:04,560
Lord and get some rest.
123
00:17:04,560 --> 00:17:10,560
So here are some things to think about. Have you ever realized that you've been making
124
00:17:10,560 --> 00:17:18,480
a fist at the Lord? What has caused you to close up your hand and telling me he wasn't
125
00:17:18,480 --> 00:17:25,360
doing it right? Or how might the declaration of release that we read help you defeat the
126
00:17:25,360 --> 00:17:33,600
tendency to take back and hold on to have bungee cords on your hands? Or if you have
127
00:17:33,600 --> 00:17:39,120
started the practice of giving thanks, even in hard situations, how have you seen your
128
00:17:39,120 --> 00:17:47,280
focus changed, your trust expanded and new doors opened? It helps us to remember and
129
00:17:47,280 --> 00:17:54,240
be able to keep applying things when we stop and recognize them. So if you say thank you
130
00:17:54,240 --> 00:18:02,680
and you see a change in your attitude or you see doors opening, those are things to notice
131
00:18:02,680 --> 00:18:10,400
and that helps us grow in our ability to come to God with open hands and say we release
132
00:18:10,400 --> 00:18:17,660
it to you and we give thanks even if it doesn't look like what we were hoping for. May you
133
00:18:17,660 --> 00:18:24,720
find that you have a free and thankful week ahead. God bless you.
