What’s in a Name? (episode 38)

What’s in a Name? (episode 38)

Most of us have two, maybe three names, and perhaps a nickname. Each of us loves to hear our name—that means someone knows us, or cares about us or wants us. Sometimes we are named after a loved one, or our parents have chosen a name with symbolic meaning. However they originate, they become us. We are known by our names.

Our God is known by His many names. Every one of His names identifies a truth about Him. His names reveal who He is, what He is like, how He will act. Each name is a promise.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:10,040
In today's episode, you will discover what God has promised you in His name.

2
00:00:10,040 --> 00:00:12,220
Do you love a prodigal?

3
00:00:12,220 --> 00:00:17,920
Do you feel like you are lost in a scary and endless wilderness?

4
00:00:17,920 --> 00:00:21,460
Welcome to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast.

5
00:00:21,460 --> 00:00:27,240
I am Judy Douglass, and I spent more than 15 years in that wilderness.

6
00:00:27,240 --> 00:00:34,000
I believe together we will discover help and hope for your journey.

7
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:37,640
Welcome back to When You Love a Prodigal.

8
00:00:37,640 --> 00:00:42,680
Did you enjoy our conversation with Beth and Todd Guggenberger last week?

9
00:00:42,680 --> 00:00:44,280
Oh my goodness.

10
00:00:44,280 --> 00:00:47,400
I just was, I almost cried several times.

11
00:00:47,400 --> 00:00:53,800
It was just so meaningful and just what I think all of us need to hear as we love and

12
00:00:53,800 --> 00:00:57,360
live with a prodigal.

13
00:00:57,360 --> 00:01:01,640
And what did you think about having 11 children?

14
00:01:01,640 --> 00:01:07,560
And now we're starting a four-week series on promise.

15
00:01:07,560 --> 00:01:12,400
The promise that comes in the names of God.

16
00:01:12,400 --> 00:01:15,720
So we have a lot to learn.

17
00:01:15,720 --> 00:01:22,220
Long ago I had a friend whose husband was Patrick, and he went by Pat.

18
00:01:22,220 --> 00:01:29,600
But when people saw his name, but not him, they didn't know if Pat was male or female.

19
00:01:29,600 --> 00:01:32,500
He grew weary of the confusion.

20
00:01:32,500 --> 00:01:38,280
So when he married my friend, they determined that the names of their children would clearly

21
00:01:38,280 --> 00:01:41,960
identify girl or boy.

22
00:01:41,960 --> 00:01:51,360
In the years that followed, they had two girls with lovely girl names, Jessica and Joanna.

23
00:01:51,360 --> 00:01:56,760
But the name soon got shortened to Jess and Joe.

24
00:01:56,760 --> 00:02:04,480
To this day, those two girls are called Jess and Joe, and people wonder, a boy or a girl

25
00:02:04,480 --> 00:02:07,200
until they see them.

26
00:02:07,200 --> 00:02:13,720
Now most of us have two names or three, some even more, and often there's a nickname.

27
00:02:13,720 --> 00:02:20,760
So we have quite a few names, and we love to hear somebody say our names.

28
00:02:20,760 --> 00:02:29,360
That means someone knows us or cares about us or wants us, except of course when someone

29
00:02:29,360 --> 00:02:34,600
in authority calls it out with an ominous tone.

30
00:02:34,600 --> 00:02:38,480
Sometimes we're named after a loved one.

31
00:02:38,480 --> 00:02:44,840
Our parents have chosen a name with symbolic meaning, and lately lots of names are made

32
00:02:44,840 --> 00:02:49,320
up or they take different names and put them together.

33
00:02:49,320 --> 00:02:58,720
However they originate, they become us, and we are known by our names.

34
00:02:58,720 --> 00:03:07,240
Our God is also known by not just a name, but many names, and every single one of those

35
00:03:07,240 --> 00:03:12,400
names identifies a truth about Him.

36
00:03:12,400 --> 00:03:20,600
His names reveal who He is and what He is like and how He will act.

37
00:03:20,600 --> 00:03:25,440
Each name of God is a promise.

38
00:03:25,440 --> 00:03:33,840
Not a promise to do as we wish, but a promise that He will always be true to His name.

39
00:03:33,840 --> 00:03:41,400
The book of Proverbs assures us the name of the Lord is a fortified tower, the righteous

40
00:03:41,400 --> 00:03:45,280
run to it and are safe.

41
00:03:45,280 --> 00:03:51,460
And so it's in the names of God that we discover who He is and what He's like and how we can

42
00:03:51,460 --> 00:03:55,840
be safe no matter what the circumstances.

43
00:03:55,840 --> 00:04:01,520
When we need something from God, we can always come to Him in His name.

44
00:04:01,520 --> 00:04:10,200
Our King, the God of the universe, says in Psalm 124, He's extended an open invitation

45
00:04:10,200 --> 00:04:13,600
to us to call on Him.

46
00:04:13,600 --> 00:04:21,400
Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

47
00:04:21,400 --> 00:04:25,880
And I don't know about you, but I need help a lot of times.

48
00:04:25,880 --> 00:04:30,880
Throughout scripture, God's chosen leaders knew to call on His name in their time of

49
00:04:30,880 --> 00:04:32,440
need.

50
00:04:32,440 --> 00:04:35,880
In Genesis we read about Abram.

51
00:04:35,880 --> 00:04:42,680
There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

52
00:04:42,680 --> 00:04:46,580
And Isaac also said a similar thing.

53
00:04:46,580 --> 00:04:50,760
He built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord.

54
00:04:50,760 --> 00:05:02,580
Elijah in 1 Kings told the people in the prophets of Baal, you call on your God and I will call

55
00:05:02,580 --> 00:05:06,380
on the name of the Lord.

56
00:05:06,380 --> 00:05:11,600
And then our Savior, Jesus, gives us the same invitation.

57
00:05:11,600 --> 00:05:17,360
Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name.

58
00:05:17,360 --> 00:05:20,360
Ask in my name.

59
00:05:20,360 --> 00:05:25,720
Not just something you say at the end of your prayer, but truly in the name of Jesus.

60
00:05:25,720 --> 00:05:32,440
Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete.

61
00:05:32,440 --> 00:05:38,360
When God calls Himself by a name, He is saying, this is true of me.

62
00:05:38,360 --> 00:05:40,480
This is who I am.

63
00:05:40,480 --> 00:05:43,400
This is how I will act.

64
00:05:43,400 --> 00:05:50,280
So when He calls Himself Jehovah Jireh, which means provider, He is saying that we can depend

65
00:05:50,280 --> 00:05:54,640
on Him to provide for all our needs.

66
00:05:54,640 --> 00:06:03,800
Jesus was called Emmanuel, God with us, which assures us that He will always be with us.

67
00:06:03,800 --> 00:06:11,080
Sometimes scripture names specific names for God, such as Shalom, which is peace.

68
00:06:11,080 --> 00:06:17,780
Other times He is described by a characteristic such as God is love.

69
00:06:17,780 --> 00:06:26,120
The key is that we can trust God to be true to each name and each named character quality

70
00:06:26,120 --> 00:06:33,240
as we move through our lives and are confronted by many different needs, including the challenging

71
00:06:33,240 --> 00:06:36,100
journey of loving a prodigal.

72
00:06:36,100 --> 00:06:42,540
We can call on God by name for that need.

73
00:06:42,540 --> 00:06:48,420
You see, the promises of God are in His names.

74
00:06:48,420 --> 00:06:56,220
The writer of Hebrews assures us, let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence.

75
00:06:56,220 --> 00:07:03,240
We can come to Him with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help

76
00:07:03,240 --> 00:07:06,320
us in our time of need.

77
00:07:06,320 --> 00:07:12,280
And the Holy Spirit goes with us as we accept that invitation.

78
00:07:12,280 --> 00:07:17,440
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

79
00:07:17,440 --> 00:07:23,800
We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with

80
00:07:23,800 --> 00:07:27,840
groans that words cannot express.

81
00:07:27,840 --> 00:07:35,680
How many times have I not known how to pray or what to pray and I say, Spirit of God,

82
00:07:35,680 --> 00:07:40,760
just you do the praying, you make the ass, because I don't even know what to do.

83
00:07:40,760 --> 00:07:42,760
And He says that He'll do that.

84
00:07:42,760 --> 00:07:45,420
He's interceding for us.

85
00:07:45,420 --> 00:07:47,320
So what are we waiting for?

86
00:07:47,320 --> 00:07:49,380
An invitation?

87
00:07:49,380 --> 00:07:51,380
We already have it.

88
00:07:51,380 --> 00:07:53,820
We have been invited.

89
00:07:53,820 --> 00:08:01,120
God is on His throne, waiting for us to accept His invitation to come.

90
00:08:01,120 --> 00:08:04,680
His arms are open, ready to welcome us.

91
00:08:04,680 --> 00:08:06,840
His ear is attuned.

92
00:08:06,840 --> 00:08:08,900
He's eager to listen.

93
00:08:08,900 --> 00:08:13,800
His heart is open, desiring to respond.

94
00:08:13,800 --> 00:08:20,080
He will be true to every name He has called Himself in the Word.

95
00:08:20,080 --> 00:08:24,760
Consider this name, Jehovah-Nissi, our banner of victory.

96
00:08:24,760 --> 00:08:28,340
That sounds a little unusual.

97
00:08:28,340 --> 00:08:34,460
But we can all agree that we are in a battle, a very real battle, fighting for the souls

98
00:08:34,460 --> 00:08:41,000
of lost people all over the world, but for each of us with a prodigal, especially for

99
00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:43,800
our own wandering one.

100
00:08:43,800 --> 00:08:45,680
We're in a battle.

101
00:08:45,680 --> 00:08:50,460
In previous episodes, we talked about this battle, but we haven't really discussed the

102
00:08:50,460 --> 00:08:56,060
final outcome of the war, and that is victory.

103
00:08:56,060 --> 00:09:03,320
When Moses and Joshua defeated the Amalekites, Moses used this name of God.

104
00:09:03,320 --> 00:09:09,080
Moses built an altar and called it, The Lord is my banner.

105
00:09:09,080 --> 00:09:14,240
It is the Lord who lifted high the banner of victory.

106
00:09:14,240 --> 00:09:17,880
The idea of a banner comes from a military context.

107
00:09:17,880 --> 00:09:23,980
It was the flag that represented the authority to which a soldier owed his allegiance and

108
00:09:23,980 --> 00:09:26,560
under which he faithfully fought.

109
00:09:26,560 --> 00:09:29,620
It was the rallying point on the battlefield.

110
00:09:29,620 --> 00:09:35,820
And after a battle, a banner lifted high gave proof of victory.

111
00:09:35,820 --> 00:09:45,000
God as our banner reminds us that his ultimate victory over sin and death and Satan was won

112
00:09:45,000 --> 00:09:47,140
at the cross.

113
00:09:47,140 --> 00:09:53,460
And we have access to this victory now, according to these promises and many others.

114
00:09:53,460 --> 00:10:03,540
In Isaiah 11, in that day, the root of Jesse, who is Jesus, will stand as a banner for the

115
00:10:03,540 --> 00:10:04,540
peoples.

116
00:10:04,540 --> 00:10:10,500
The nations will rally to him and his resting place will be glorious.

117
00:10:10,500 --> 00:10:17,780
In 1 Corinthians, but thanks be to God, he gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus

118
00:10:17,780 --> 00:10:19,660
Christ.

119
00:10:19,660 --> 00:10:26,540
And in Romans, no, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved

120
00:10:26,540 --> 00:10:28,300
us.

121
00:10:28,300 --> 00:10:36,380
And in 2 Corinthians, Paul says, but thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives

122
00:10:36,380 --> 00:10:43,180
in Christ's triumphal possession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of

123
00:10:43,180 --> 00:10:45,860
him everywhere.

124
00:10:45,860 --> 00:10:53,420
So we pray and claim in faith the promises embodied in this name.

125
00:10:53,420 --> 00:10:58,200
He is our prodigal's victory and ours.

126
00:10:58,200 --> 00:11:04,060
In the next three weeks, we will look at some more of the different names of God.

127
00:11:04,060 --> 00:11:08,660
Most will be Hebrew from the Old Testament, a few from Greek.

128
00:11:08,660 --> 00:11:12,900
Each name is his promise to us.

129
00:11:12,900 --> 00:11:13,900
Did you hear me?

130
00:11:13,900 --> 00:11:16,020
I know I've said it several times.

131
00:11:16,020 --> 00:11:20,100
Each name is his promise to us.

132
00:11:20,100 --> 00:11:26,660
Let us come into his presence, bring in our worship, our thanks, and our requests with

133
00:11:26,660 --> 00:11:37,420
boldness and confidence, for he desires to be with us and to be all he is to us.

134
00:11:37,420 --> 00:11:41,220
So let me ask you a couple of questions.

135
00:11:41,220 --> 00:11:45,380
What is a great need in your life right now?

136
00:11:45,380 --> 00:11:52,420
Would you go to Scripture and seek to find a name of God that assures you that he will

137
00:11:52,420 --> 00:11:57,480
keep his promise to be that for you?

138
00:11:57,480 --> 00:12:06,740
So you're lonely, so you're afraid, so you're in despair, whatever the need in your life,

139
00:12:06,740 --> 00:12:09,420
especially regarding your prodigal.

140
00:12:09,420 --> 00:12:16,740
Is there a name of God that will address that for you and give you assurance that God will

141
00:12:16,740 --> 00:12:21,260
do that, that he will keep his promise?

142
00:12:21,260 --> 00:12:26,220
And I would really encourage you to take a look at the show notes for some other resources

143
00:12:26,220 --> 00:12:30,180
to bless you on this wilderness journey.

144
00:12:30,180 --> 00:12:33,560
God bless you.
