Rest in the Presence, episode 22 (rebroadcast)

Rest in the Presence, episode 22 (rebroadcast)

When our prodigal, Josh, was 15, and in one of his better seasons as a prodigal, he served for a week as a junior counselor at a wilderness camp for at-risk boys. One activity included a five-mile hike, with each counselor leading a small group.

Josh and his boys came to a crossroads, looking for the right turn to take. Unfortunately they took the wrong turn, and their five-mile hike turned into 10 miles. When they finally made it back to camp, they were sore, tired and unhappy.

Whether we choose the wrong path, or end up there accidentally, it is almost always exhausting. But our God assures His way will give us rest.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,920
Do you love a prodigal? Do you feel like you are lost in a scary and endless wilderness?

2
00:00:09,920 --> 00:00:17,320
Welcome to the When You Love a Prodigal podcast. I am Judy Douglass and I spent more than 15

3
00:00:17,320 --> 00:00:25,760
years in that wilderness. I believe together we will discover help and hope for your journey.

4
00:00:25,760 --> 00:00:32,080
Did you appreciate last week's conversation with Alan and Gem Fadling? Did you feel like

5
00:00:32,080 --> 00:00:39,360
they were talking about you always in a hurry, rushing from one commitment to another? Were

6
00:00:39,360 --> 00:00:48,600
you able to apply some of their helpful suggestions for living an unhurried life? Hopefully you

7
00:00:48,600 --> 00:00:56,400
will find lots of rest over the next four weeks as we discover what God offers us in

8
00:00:56,400 --> 00:01:05,360
the way of rest. Today we will start with this word from the prophet Jeremiah. He says,

9
00:01:05,360 --> 00:01:14,840
stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient pass, ask where the good way is

10
00:01:14,840 --> 00:01:24,960
and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls. When our prodigal Josh was 15

11
00:01:24,960 --> 00:01:31,760
and in one of his brief better seasons as a prodigal, he served for a week as a junior

12
00:01:31,760 --> 00:01:39,320
counselor at a wilderness camp for at-risk boys. He was barely older than they were.

13
00:01:39,320 --> 00:01:47,760
One activity included a five-mile hike with each counselor leading a small group. Josh

14
00:01:47,760 --> 00:01:54,840
and his boys came to a crossroads looking for the right turn to take the right path

15
00:01:54,840 --> 00:02:03,600
to get back to camp. Unfortunately, they took the wrong turn and their five-mile hike turned

16
00:02:03,600 --> 00:02:14,260
into 10 miles. When they finally made it back to camp, they were sore, tired, and not happy.

17
00:02:14,260 --> 00:02:22,860
These boys had not intended to take the wrong path on their hike, but sadly for our wanderers,

18
00:02:22,860 --> 00:02:28,920
they have chosen the wrong path for their lives or at least for this part of their lives

19
00:02:28,920 --> 00:02:39,140
and they have no rest because choosing the wrong path is exhausting. Unfortunately, we

20
00:02:39,140 --> 00:02:46,520
sometimes choose the wrong path as well. We have entered the fray with our prodigals.

21
00:02:46,520 --> 00:02:52,960
There's a battle going on. We seek to be in control, to make things happen the way we

22
00:02:52,960 --> 00:03:01,680
want, to win that battle. And our minds are exhausted from striving to know where our

23
00:03:01,680 --> 00:03:09,280
prodigals are and what they're doing, trying to find something that works to bring them

24
00:03:09,280 --> 00:03:19,040
back. Our hearts are so weary from the battle, the confusion, the loss, the fear. Even our

25
00:03:19,040 --> 00:03:27,080
bodies are tired, depleted from conflict, sleep deprived, worn out from going to and

26
00:03:27,080 --> 00:03:37,740
fro looking for help. So are you tired, weary? Do you need a break? When you love a prodigal,

27
00:03:37,740 --> 00:03:47,200
it is usually normal to say yes to those questions. I am tired. I am weary. I really need a break.

28
00:03:47,200 --> 00:03:55,000
Here's what God says. He says, take the day off. Take the day off? That doesn't sound

29
00:03:55,000 --> 00:04:05,480
possible. God is a great fan of rest. He rested after creating the universe. He provided a

30
00:04:05,480 --> 00:04:15,000
day of rest for us. In fact, He commanded us to rest. He said, everyone in the home

31
00:04:15,000 --> 00:04:23,240
plus the animals in their stalls need to take a day off and rest. He required that even

32
00:04:23,240 --> 00:04:31,840
the land get a year off every seven years. I think God is serious about rest. And rest

33
00:04:31,840 --> 00:04:40,080
is especially relevant and needful to anyone who loves a prodigal. As we consider God's

34
00:04:40,080 --> 00:04:48,560
attention to rest, our first focus will be on finding rest for ourselves, our bodies,

35
00:04:48,560 --> 00:04:56,480
our minds, our spirits. Then in the weeks to come, we will also talk about praying rest

36
00:04:56,480 --> 00:05:04,720
for our prodigals. Just think how weary they must be as they fight against you, the demons

37
00:05:04,720 --> 00:05:12,520
and addictions, and against the eternal God. Perhaps some rest for their souls will give

38
00:05:12,520 --> 00:05:20,160
them the desire, the will to abandon the fight they have chosen and walk a different path,

39
00:05:20,160 --> 00:05:27,240
a good path. As the scripture I quoted at the beginning encourages us, let's look for

40
00:05:27,240 --> 00:05:38,360
God's good and ancient paths that wind their way to rest, rest for our souls. We will begin

41
00:05:38,360 --> 00:05:46,600
with the greatest place for rest in the presence of God. During the darkest years of our journey

42
00:05:46,600 --> 00:05:53,760
with our prodigal, I had a friend who was there for me. She came when I needed her.

43
00:05:53,760 --> 00:06:00,720
She listened. She wept. She encouraged. She prayed. I could be sure that I could lean

44
00:06:00,720 --> 00:06:06,920
against her when I was weak, or she would catch me before I fell, or pick me up when

45
00:06:06,920 --> 00:06:15,260
I crashed. Her presence was often a place of rest for me in the midst of the seemingly

46
00:06:15,260 --> 00:06:23,480
never-ending turmoil and weariness. But she could only hold me up for so long. She grew

47
00:06:23,480 --> 00:06:31,880
weary in the battle as well. But there is one who is always there for me, who knows

48
00:06:31,880 --> 00:06:40,720
and feels my deepest pain, who listens and weeps and encourages and prays. He invites

49
00:06:40,720 --> 00:06:49,080
me to lean on him, his everlasting arms always waiting to catch me. His right hand reaches

50
00:06:49,080 --> 00:06:58,680
out to pull me up. Trying to live away from God's presence is exhausting. We know it.

51
00:06:58,680 --> 00:07:05,680
When we try to control our prodigals, we grow weary. Exhaustion haunts us as we pursue every

52
00:07:05,680 --> 00:07:13,660
effort to restore our loved ones. Our prodigals also grow weary as they run from God and seek

53
00:07:13,660 --> 00:07:22,640
pleasure and even meaning for their lives apart from him. But there is rest in his presence.

54
00:07:22,640 --> 00:07:32,440
In Exodus, God said to Moses, my presence will go with you and I will give you rest.

55
00:07:32,440 --> 00:07:40,640
So today, if this is a bad day in your journey, or tomorrow, on your hard days, remember God

56
00:07:40,640 --> 00:07:50,040
says, my presence will go with you and I will give you rest. Moses understood how vital

57
00:07:50,040 --> 00:07:56,680
it was to be in the presence of the Lord. He replied, if your presence does not go with

58
00:07:56,680 --> 00:08:03,520
us as we head into the promised land, if you don't go with us, don't even send us. We can't

59
00:08:03,520 --> 00:08:11,040
go. He says, unless you're with us, we're not going. God was pleased and replied, I

60
00:08:11,040 --> 00:08:18,680
will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you and I will proclaim my name, the Lord,

61
00:08:18,680 --> 00:08:27,840
in your presence. And God's presence went with them. David assures us in Psalm 16, you

62
00:08:27,840 --> 00:08:36,360
make known to me the path of life. You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal

63
00:08:36,360 --> 00:08:47,920
pleasures at your right hand. Jesus himself said in Matthew, I am with you always, even

64
00:08:47,920 --> 00:08:55,560
to the end of the age, always he's with us. He is available, waiting for us to come to

65
00:08:55,560 --> 00:09:03,640
him. When we seek him out, when we dwell in his presence, we will find rest. The same

66
00:09:03,640 --> 00:09:11,600
is true for our prodigals. We can pray for the presence of God to surround them, comfort

67
00:09:11,600 --> 00:09:20,640
them, overwhelm them. We can ask God to give them a taste of the rest they are missing

68
00:09:20,640 --> 00:09:28,560
as they wander far from his presence. And the Apostle John in 1 John confirms it. He

69
00:09:28,560 --> 00:09:39,040
says, we set our hearts at rest in his presence so we can know that when we are weary, we

70
00:09:39,040 --> 00:09:47,440
can go into the arms of God and in his presence, we will find rest for our bodies and our minds

71
00:09:47,440 --> 00:09:54,900
and our souls, Lord, our souls at rest. And the same can happen for our prodigal, but

72
00:09:54,900 --> 00:10:02,540
we can only for the most part pray that God's presence would surround them and they would

73
00:10:02,540 --> 00:10:10,400
become aware of their weariness and remember where they'll find rest for their souls in

74
00:10:10,400 --> 00:10:19,360
the presence of God. Something to think about. When have you finally given up and fallen

75
00:10:19,360 --> 00:10:29,640
into God's arms and the rest he gives? Or and what has helped you to dwell, to keep

76
00:10:29,640 --> 00:10:37,000
living, to dwell in the presence of God? God bless you. Thank you for joining me today
